21.2 Maximum Score

Imp

Recommended Posts

For GHIN handicapping purposes, Match Play rounds and Stableford can still be submitted for GHIN handicap purposes (Where match play if picking up, enter most likely score). How does one, or is one allowed to, submit to GHIN for handicapping purposes for Maximum Score 21.2 type play? Still put in most likely score if you had finished the hole?

Part 2:

Can you put a limit on strokes for stableford or match play rounds combining with 21.1, and still submit most likely score?

IMO the USGA has not adequately addressed your question, at least not in the current online Handicap Manual (which, by the way, still refers to the 2018 Rules in some of its comments).

**I would ask my handicap chair**, but beyond that IMO one should only post if an adequate number of holes have actually been completed as noted below.

I consider "your esc maximum" as an ideal maximum score in this format, in which case there should be no problem posting. I note that a committee could use par as the "maximum score." To actually post a score of par, for me, would pretty much ruin my competitive season.

a. Scores To Post

To post a 9-hole score, the player must play 7 to 12 holes, and at least 7 holes must be played under the Rules of Golf. To post an 18-hole score, the player must play at least 13 holes under the Rules of Golf. (See Decisions 5-1a/3 through 5-1a/5.)

A committee could make the max score “4”. Thusly, one couldn’t shoot worse than 72 for the competitive round. It’d definitely keep Scores more bunched.

But for posting purposes, you could continue playing out the hole past “4” to see what you shot. Or pick up and post MLS up to ESC. Much like after a concession in match play.

While not specifically addressed, that’s what I’d guess. And I’d also guess a revision addressing this new form of play isn’t coming anytime soon. There will be a complete overhaul of the handicap system starting 1/1/20, if everything stays on schedule. So I’d guess they are busy with that roll-out.

I am a little late to the thread here. But maybe 10 years ago I was playing a casual round with 3 buddies (players A, B, C and Me). A, B, and Me teed off and as C was teeing his ball this HUGE lightning bolt hit the ground probably a couple miles away (following by a bit time thunder clap). And that was the end of the round.

I ended up contacting the USGA regarding posting and the answer was interesting. FIRST you apply Rule 4 regarding unfinished holes. Now you have 'finished' 13 holes so you post a 18 hole score. Except C didn't tee off so he can post only a 9 hole score as he did not start the hole.

This was at least 10 years ago, but I assume things have not changed.

For better or worse, the Handicap rules are still separate from the Rules of Golf, which is where Rule 21.2 comes from. There's no guarantee, but I'd bet that most competitions that use a maximum score would set that maximum at or above a player's maximum hole score for handicap purposes (ESC in the USGA system). If that's the case, there's no conflict at all. If the the competition max score is low enough, its almost certainly been set at least partially for pace of play concerns, so I wouldn't recommend playing past the competition max score, pick it up and use your "most likely" score. This isn't a rule of any kind, but I believe its the right thing to do.

Stableford has its own limit on hole score, the point at which you can get no fewer points. Again, for pace of play reasons I'd suggest pocketing your ball when you reach that score, and use "most likely" for handicap purposes. Again, this is my personal opinion, not a Rule of Golf.

Also to @Sawgrass point earlier, there is no limit to the number of unfinished holes in a round, as long as he's not stopping his play in order to manipulate his handicap.

And I know this is nit-picking, but you have a USGA Handicap, not a GHIN Handicap. GHIN is just a computational service which collects the scores and does the USGA calculations if your regional Golf Association has chosen to use GHIN's services.
