I played 3 consecutive rounds with the same AVX... then my buddy hit it in the water. It was still very playable, but didn't look new by any stretch of the imagination.

Usually our Sunday 27 holes, then it goes in the 'having a bad day' collection, or give to the kids.

It's rare to ruin a modern quality ball, could go longer, I just like starting the day with a brand new ball.

Haven't been back in this thread for a while.

Seems like a wide variety of responses.

From "One round" to "As many as I can before it's decimated" LOL

Personally, I like a new ball to start each round, but may get 2 or 3 out of one, but once it's scuffed or otherwise looking worn, it goes in the shag bag or down range.

There was a time when I would, without fail, start with a new ball every round.

I don't have a set time, it's really just about how long the cover is still sound. If I don't manage to hit it off the planet, there's always road rash to help push a ball out of the pocket and into retirement.

I still have a dozen or two wound balls that I've picked up for those times I feel like wallowing in the Days of Yore, using persimmons and wound balls. I was able to somehow avoid cart paths and trees enough that I got into a fourth round with the same HT-100. On the 5th hole of that fourth round, I noticed the ball was noticeably wobbling on a putt. I'd finally beat it into submission.

Modern golfball durability is wonderful. ;)

Though most of the tourneys and all of the money games that I Played in went by the “one ball rule,” I always adhered to it from the time that I was a kid through my last tourney and all money games.

Regarding how many balls I went through per round, I averaged just over 6, so basically one every three holes.

I Played the Stones B-330S and then the RXS??

Always marked with a Sharpie Pink & Always Played a Stones 3...

Cheers?

Saw a video from one of the ball designers, and he said play it until it has a blemish you can feel with your fingernail. At that point the aerodynamics are affected.

One of the reasons I play z star is because it's significantly more durable than ProV1x or TP5X (my experience). I felt about 18 holes is all I could get out of the ProV1x or TP5X but they started looking chewed up but I feel I can get ~3-4 rounds out the z stars. With all these manufacturers coming out with new balls for '19 I've decided to spend the first month or so trying out and testing balls but it'll be very hard to kick the z star out of the bag.

P.S. like others have said, once my balls start getting too bruised up they are relegated to practice duty. I think practicing with your gamer ball is pretty helpful (rather than grabbing 8 random balls to chip-putt with).

ProV1 was always my go-to ball. After one round the ball would not be in good shape because of damage from my irons that I would have had to file with an Emory board in order to ensure the aerodynamics (probably a rules violation?). They would look ugly.

I started playing the 4-piece Kirkland and right away noticed that the cover was more durable. Costco sued Titleist. Titleist sued Costco. One on the Titleist claims was that the Kirkland ball was not as durable as claimed. I thought, this is crazy. So I played a single Kirkland, and played it and played it. Ten rounds. No sheen left at the end of the experiment, but there was no cover damage and the ball played fine. I am no power player - 95 mph driver - but I hit my irons plenty good enough to tear up the cover of a ProV1 in short order, with standard Ping grooves.

I don't play ProV1 anymore, because of their lack of durability. (I also don't play a ball for 10 rounds, grin.) But I hit the ball straight, and seldom lose a ball, and I want something more durable than a ProV1. I would like to get 2-3 rounds from a ball before it's bad. I am running low on Kirklands, and they aren't available. I will go the Vice/Snell/Oncore route and see what happens. I played some MG's a while ago and they seemed to perform reasonably well on approach shots and not get all beat up like aPro1.

I will play a ball until it is scuffed up. So no more then 2 rounds in most cases just 1. Back around 1992 I started to talk to my ball on the first tee and told it that it could be retired and live for ever if it last 18 and I broke 80. I would write the score, date and course on it after the round and maybe some other info if it was memorable. I did this for 3-4 years and filled up a big shoe box then I stopped for some reason. Just last winter I found a bag that had a bunch of the balls, I either lost or got rid of most of them and now have the remaining ones on a shelf in my garage. Pretty cool to relive some of those rounds. A bunch of them were with og Precept EV balls........

Longest I will usually play an undamaged ball is 54 holes, assuming it isn't lost before then. I don't mind wedge marks or tree marks, but a good cart path scuff and it goes into the shag bag.

At this point it might be a round a ball maybe a bit more unless I scuff it too much or lose it. If it's scuffed a ton I either toss it to a friend or I'll putt with it in my basement. I have gathered a mass of golf balls so a ball or two a round and I'm not making a dent this year.

after being away from golf for about 10 years I got back into it about 7 years ago. I had never been married to a certain brand, but I decided that I would go all in with ProV1. But, being a cheap Word not allowed guy I went with "mint" and "near mint" used balls. To me, for the most part they looked like balls I'd played 3 or 4 holes with, and I have never changed out balls after 3 or 4 holes unless I hit a cart path or something. Some had logos on them, and so were recognizable. Some of them, I played so many rounds on them I could remember shots I hit, or nice rounds I had with the particular logo. They were like old friends. I had one that I bounced off of the red 100 yard marker and it picked up a smudge. I had that ball forever. I think I finally dunked it into a pond.

So, now I have nothing but old balls and it's Spring, and it's cold and wet and I am getting no distance from anything. I'm 65 years old, so I'm wondering if I've some sort of wall, is it the cold and wet, or are these balls just no good anymore. I was going to try some Snells, but with the buy 3 get a 4th free deal, the ProV1s weren't THAT much more than the Snells...so I'm waiting for my 4 dozen BRAND NEW ProV1s to arrive. Hopefully things will be warm and dryer by then. And they will go farther. Hopefully.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

As long as the cover of the ball isn't damaged I'll keep playing it. Or unless I lose it. My current ball has been in play for 36 holes and counting.

During my playing days in the early 90s when I played Titleist Tour Balata balls I would go through 4 to 6 balls a round. I rarely lost balls. The problem with the old Balata balls is that when hit hard they would go out of round after a few holes. Also, a thin shot would slice open the cover exposing the rubber band windings. The cover would chafe when hitting wedges aggressively.
