Is Anyone Else Sick and Tired of Performance Golf Shirts?

Recommended Posts

J Lindeberg cotton polos have been some of the nicest i have found, esp the ones that are mercerized (https://www.freshpolos.com/j-lindeberg-jl-tailored-fit-men-s-polo-shirt.html) . Also some of the other golf specific ones have a stitched collar that hold their shape better than some of the classic polo... But on a hot summers day and youre sweating like a glass blowers arse, the performance materials tend to not show your moob sweat rings!

Try playing junior tennis tournaments in the deep south in the middle of summer in 100% cotton. I'm still bitter about it. I would literally go through 4-5 shirts a match.

I'll have to agree with the OP on this one. I find cotton to be much more comfortable and I live in the deep south. Or maybe I just don't sweat like most of you apparently do. I think a lot of folks have just been brainwashed by all the marketing hype. Having said that, all of my golf shirts are performance fabric, but only because it's so difficult to find good looking cotton polo's these days. There is NOTHING more miserable than cutting grass on a hot summer day in one of those performance fabric T-shirts...Just plain sucks!!

You need to try the Dunning Golf brands shirts. They have some different styles and one that works great and feels great their Natural Hand line. It’s a performance shirt made out of coolmax and cotton blend. You get the feel of cotton with the benefits and breathability of coolmax. For me it’s the best of both worlds.

Linksoul 100% cotton most of the year for me, and I wear their Drytech 56/40/4 blend in the depths of the summer. I don't have a 100% poly shirt left in my closet.

Wrong! Why would you torture yourself. But if you wear 100% cotton you got to wear the Khaki pleated pants and shorts

I used to notice that they stink sooner also. Someone told to wash my golf shirts with towels and use Downey odor protect. He said the new he washer don’t use enough water to completely rinse the sweat out. Putting the towels in with the shirts causes more water in the tub because it’s a heavier load so the sweat rinses out better. The Downy scent definitely seems to last during a round also.

Being from the south and living in TX now (note these two are NOT the same), I'd die without performance shirts. I wear cotton "nice" shirts out and about, but on the course. It's 90+ for 7+ months of the year here. I wish they'd make them thinner than they are. Props to climachill and some of the underarmour shirts for doing just that.

Thanks. No, not doing anything special with the laundering.

The breathability of the fabric is not the issue. It's the "different" feel of the performance fabric against the skin that I never could abide. Anyways, considering the overwhelming support of performance over cotton, I'll sit down now (and quietly continue to buy 100% cotton).

Wooden clubs? No.

Metal spikes? That's a tougher call. I remember the days of metal spikes and miss the sound of spikes on the pavement. However, I cannot deny that greens today are much better than yesteryear, partially due to the ban on metal spikes.

I agree with OP as well. Cotton does feel better to me. I pretty much won't buy anything that isn't cotton, wool, or some kind of blend. It's even worse cycling and trying to find fabrics that aren't plastic.

I pulled on a UA polo shirt for work today that I bought when I worked at a sporting goods store in 2003. This thing is 15 years old and the color is still there, not faded. Still the exact size it was when i bought it, not stretched out nor shrunk. And the collar behaves.

Got to say I am a fan of the performance polos. My only gripe is deodorant can build up in the fabric in the pits and discolor it. I have a 70% cotton shirt that does the same though.

Any tips for getting the deodorant released from the fabric?

Funny how many cultural idiosyncrasies come into play when this topic comes up.... how much do you sweat? Does it bother you for your shirt to visibly be wet? Do you stink? Do you change immediately into another shirt?

When I got "back" into golf a few years ago I bought a bunch of performance poly shirts. I've come to believe that is an oxymoron. But, I'm probably biased as I worked in the outdoor adventure industry for most of my adult life and we all wear poly products in case the temperature drops and you get wet. I simply can't stand the smell of it anymore. Freeze it, boil it, soak it in vinegar, blah blah blah, I just quit wearing it.

Bonus of cotton is when it holds water against your skin and the wind blows it's pure ecstasy.

Find a different deodorant?

Personally I wear anti-perspirant that's super strong like Mitchums gel, but I don't coat it on after every shower. I probably put it on twice a week and it tends to last until I really sweat a ton. I've never found it to transfer to my clothes as long as you let it dry before dressing.

Some of the shirts are 15 years old or so. Many changes of deodorants/antiperspirants in those years. They all seem to do it to an extent. The material does not really stain the fabric, it clogs the fabric (the way antiperspirants clog your sweat glands) and its presence is noticeable both in the slight change in color and in the feel of the fabric. It loses its breathability.

Personal note on the verge of TMI, I am pretty lucky in that I am not an overly sweaty nor stinky dude and can get away with not wearing much deo at all. I use as little as possible and encourage others to use a minimum amount or none if they can as well. You have a bunch of glands and components of your lymphatic system in your armpits. You really should not go messing with them if you can help from it. The pancreas is the chief organ of your lymphatic system. If you have ever had the misfortune of knowing someone who has had pancreatic cancer you know it is pretty well a death sentence. The nature/purpose of that body system is to transport chemicals throughout your body. If you apply a chemical to a major node of that system day after day it can't be good for you.

All that being said, I'll try the mitchums.

I’ll add that I couldn’t disagree more with the OP. I absolutely love my performance polos, and I might love my performance dress shirts (Mizzen and Main) even more. Has been a major improvement in my life. No more ironing. No more ruined collars. Etc.

That said, there are some performance shirts that aren’t as good as others, so maybe you have the wrong ones?

Last, for discoloration from deodorant, my wife claims that comes from anti-perspirant. She claims that if you get deodorant only, it will eliminate this problem. But I find that deodorant only makes me stinkier. I haven’t tested her theory, but I believe it to be true, thus when I go play on a very hot day I sometimes use deodorant only. Haven’t noticed problems with pit stains in a while, but I haven’t 100% confirmed either.
