Looking for slightly more forgiving "player irons"

Recommended Posts

Hate that term but it is what it is. Currently in some cb/mb combo's and while I love the feel and just the thought of gaming Miura's... They are pretty unforgiving on my miss, which is a little toey. I still want something classic looking but with just a little more forgiveness and something with fairly traditional lofts so I'm not sacrificing spin. Soft feel is a huge bonus.

Short list are p750, p760, Apex pro (2014 and 2019), AP2 & maybe 919F or iBlade. I've tested MP-18SC and Z785 and wasn't a huge fan purely because of feel but I did get pretty good results from Z785. Also, am Lefty so that eliminates clubs like 919 Tour, etc. Not opposed to slightly older sets.

I play a set of Miura CBs, but have a set of 716 AP2s in a backup bag that are definitely more forgiving. The newest AP2s may be even better, and certainly look better. As a lefty, you may be able to find a deal on something like that? I've owned the Mizzy MP54s and while they felt pretty good and were relatively forgiving, they launched higher than I expected and played a little shorter than I had hoped.

I have played JPX 900 Forged, and 716-718 AP2s in the past year and the 718s are still in the bag. For me they were not as long as the JPX 900, but were a tad more forgiving. JPX 900 Forged are strong lofted 3-7 iron. They were also less spinning than the 716 AP2 and have a better leading edge. Honestly I don't think you could go wrong with either of these three sets.

716 CB has been great for me.

According to Titleist, the 716 CBs are as forgiving as the 714 AP2. Toe-strikes on my 716 CBs are shockingly forgiving versus the MBs I had previously.

Yeah I hit the 919 Forged and they were almost too long. Hitting the 7i with too low of spin and I would carry a few in the mid 170's, which then ultimately causes a weird gap either between 8 and 9i, or possible even 9i to wedge. I suspect something a little more forgiving might lower my spin a tad and I don't mind adjusting lofts or even switching balls to compensate. I just don't want a 7i spinning at 5,000 (unless it launches to the moon.. but then those are tough to play down wind).

I can't give you a really good reason as to why... something was just "off" about them. Hit them side by side with 919 Forged and just felt like the forged was better all around. Similar size and feel but the forged was giving better end results. Same shaft, too.

I did demo p760 and AP19. Loved both. Nervous about the added speed from those irons, might need to give AP2 a shot.

I went from Mizuno blades ... to Miura tournament blades .... to Ping S series (every one from s58 to s57 to s56 to s55)

The Ping s55 in your answer. I have a set of these and I mix in Rapture or Rapture J long irons

The Miura and Mizuno's were awesome on perfect shots. But the PING s55 with the tungsten toe weight is soooo easy on toe misses (which is my miss)

Myself and others here tried the iblade's and went right back to s55. YMMV

t-mb's also good. I have a set of those as well. Only negative is they are not fantastic on slightly thin misses (like the s55's are)

S55s are great and very player looking.... The Srixon 7x5 series might also be worth a look, but my current J15 cb have been the most forgiving iron while still having that player look. Blade length is a touch longer than my 745s, but the top line is thinner, which I love. They have been phenomenal irons so far, good enough I put the S55s up for sale. Currently own those 3 and have enjoyed playing all of them from a feel and forgiveness standpoint.

Also TMB are $$$$. I'm trying to keep it relatively close to the value of my Miura's I think for this very moment. So.. Anything like $650 or so is okay. Maybe would toss a few bucks more at something in really nice shape.

I will second the Cally X Forged, now i am definitely biased as i game those currently. I tested 18’ AP2, had played 16’ apex pro, MP 18sc and Mmc, twk finalists werw x forged and mp18 sc, x forged just felt better and softer.

Yeah, but they aren't going to be softer than the Srixons. And the Srixons probably have a little more help with the tungsten slug for his toe miss.

I play the 712 CB's and they have never disappointed. Look like a blade, plays like a SGI. I love them > @MelloYello said:

I'll probably keep my P790 4i since it's nice off the tee and still lands fairly soft off the deck, so 5-PW on whatever my next set is.

At this point I'm kiiiind of leaning S55 or Apex Pro '14 because there are sets out there for only like $350. Little beat up looking some, but nothing crazy. Unless I found a really good deal on something like AP19 or AP2 for $650 or less, I'd rather try to make an even swap or make some $$ out of this change.
