Weighting P790 Irons

Recommended Posts

I have two rounds with the P790 irons and not to pleased with them. They are too light and am hitting them all over the toe. So I put some lead tape on them to bring them up some. I did the same to my CF16's and it really helped. I am also not getting the distance I want either, so hopefully the extra weight will help with that as well. Should hit them soon and find out.

I am having to make some significant adjustments to mine as well. Not impressed with TaylorMade quality control. My P790s all swing weight in the high C range despite being heavy shafted (PX 6.5) and extended length (progressively from +1 in the 9 iron to standard in the 5 iron). I have heavy grips but that still can't account for all of this. The swing weights are also highly variable -- as much as 4 sw difference from wedge to 9-iron, for example. I have been able to normalize the weights with lead tape, but this is not ideal.

OEM swing weights are often not consistent from club to club, and their shaft lengths tend to be cut longer in order to try and create more ball speed for the illusion of more distance on center hits. What shaft do you have in your irons? Yes, you can add lead tape to the back of the heads to see if a higher and consistent swing-weight, such as D2, helps you out. Also, if you have or have access to a swing-weight scale, see what your old clubs measured. D1 or D2 is kind of standard, with wedges from D2 to D5. But swing weight is very individual. Shaft weight is also a major consideration. If you went to a significantly lighter or heavier shaft, that could affect where your hits are happening on the club face. As could shaft flex. If you find the tape solves your problem, just keep it on (yes, ugly on $1,000 club set) or pull the shafts and put a corresponding weight plug in the end of your shaft. Going to lighter grips will increase swing-weight, but also make the overall club lighter. What is your 5 iron or driver swing speed? What is your index? Shaft and flex?

Today was a very good day for irons, and the weighting is getting all the credit. I hit as lot of GIR'S and that made it a lot of fun. I hit one PW so pure, and it went over the green, it was moving. I didn't expect to get all of it, and you know how that happens. I need some range time, but what a difference some lead tape made. I added about 3 1/4" of lead to all the irons. They just felt so solid and going further as well, about 5 yards on average. Don't change irons till you try some lead tape, and it is a lot of help for seniors needing more flex and length. I think light clubs are the worse thing for seniors.

If you dont mind lead tape, consider adding some to the shaft on the underside of it so its not visible from address.

Both head weight and shaft weight is important for the feedback we navigate on, so if your clubs in general feel "light", try 5-10 grams added about the middle of the shaft (on the approximate BP of the shaft to simulate or "copy" a higher shaft wgt.)

Just set a mark about the middle of the shaft, and the same mark on the middle of the amount lead tape you wants to add, then align the marks with each other so the tape goes "head to grip" on the underside of the shaft.

> Thanks, never thought about a mid weight system before! The lead tape doesn't bother me at all, and matches the head color. I really like the weight behind the ball and think PXG has the market there.

During a club fitting, we often use lead tape on the shaft instead of changing the shaft when we try to dial in what shaft weight the player would fit to play, so we start out from the "light side", and add until we get the ball park. Then we look at the options we got at hand in that weight range, and start the testing over, now with a narrow shaft weight range (plus minus 5 grams) so we eliminate all options we dont have to consider.

Most "standard shaft" has a balance point close to the middle, unless its a "tip heavy model" like Dynamic Gold SL (Super light), or butt heavy like some "counter weighted" options, so if you just measure from the hosel top to the top of the grip, then ADD 1.25" as insert dept then / 2...you got a good spot to place that weight, and all clubs become "equally changed".

When we add weight at that spot, we "simulate" the same shaft model, only with more weight, and we make the same difference UP on SW value like if we actually moved up in shaft weight, so we move both Total wgt and a tad on SW this way.

Only 3 grams might make a huge difference. The reason is, the closer we get to our own "ideal" the more sensitive we become to changes, so that might be all it takes to move it all from "good" to "perfect".

Tell us how that turned out when you have tried it off.
