UK Golf Attire

Recommended Posts

Most of the courses i play have very casual attire and we typically do not play in the rain where i live. I will have an opportunity to play St Andrews and Carnoustie (assuming the courses are not closed). What kind of golf attire should i invest in for Uk golf? Formal? Dress warm? Water repellant attire? Is cursing allowed?

I assume the above is a joke, lol.

Zen - take a look at each course's website and they will generally have something about attire on the course, in the clubhouse, and sometimes certain areas of the clubhouse. Also mind what they say about what shoes you can wear if you plan venturing into the clubhouse other than the golf shop.

Rain may be an issue, it may not, so you want to be prepared for that and a chill in the air, but that doesn't require a lot of extra clothes.

I wore some nice, regular golf pants, a normal short-sleeved golf shirt and a pullover I bought at Royal Dornoch on The Old Course. Some 5 pocket thin wale cords that looked nice at Royal Dornoch. Jeans, yes jeans, for two rounds at Brora - club allows them, weather made them comfortable and the sheep and cattle weren't intimidated. We had great weather for two weeks, got rained on a tiny bit three times, no big deal. Golf pants, normal golf shirts on the other courses.

But, check the rules for each club to be on the safe side for the course and inside and don't change clothes other than in their locker rooms!

Bring your rain suit...you just never know.

I played 36 at Princes in fog and cool weather (wore a sweater and 1/4 zip top over my polo). I got poured on at Silloth with 45+mph winds (rain suit over a polo with thermal and 1/4 zip). Three days later I played at North Berwick and it was 45 degrees and sunny (just wore a sweater over my polo with a warm hat). Granted, that was all December, but at the very least, plan like you'll get rained on. You'd rather have it than not.

Regardless, have a blast. I sure wish I could play there more often. Great golf and even better people.

On the course generally go with a collared t shirt and smart trousers. Unless agreed by the club, like @Hawkeye77 mentioned Brora above, then jeans are typically not allowed.

As for clubhouses no hats, caps, waterproofs or golf shoes. May need jacket, shirt and tie after certain times at some courses. All dependent on the course. Check out their website as it'll give you the lowdown on everything as every club is different.

A collared shirt and non-jean pants for play on the course. (North Foreland, Prince’s and Royal St. George’s gave me no trouble with my that.

Expect certain areas of the clubhouse to enforce other standards of dress. At Royal St. George’s, a navy jacket with a red tie over a white button-up and khaki slacks was appropriate attire for afternoon clubhouse wear. Be advised different times of day may change dress standards as well, with a general rule of later-> more formal.

In my case I emailed each club I played at long in advance and the clubs were quick to reiterate any dress concerns. I highly recommend emailing the clubs in advance anyway (it made them happy) just to know firsthand what’s going on.

Happy golfing!

Royal course which only allowed female members a couple years ago now( there is still no senior ones though). It's a very traditional course but they have relaxed the rules for the main bar in the last few years to encourage people to use it. I wear my Blade Nike shirt with no complaints yet about it. No voice calls in the clubhouse but I sit on insta when I am having my lunch on my lonesome.

About 2 weeks ago they changed the rules to allow shorts on the course as a tester this summer but again there are very few days a year golfing in Scotland needs shorts to be worn. As far as swearing goes on the course, is that ever really needed but strange question to ask, just say it to yourself quieter or in your head!

this is taken directly from my club -
