No significant surprises. The Triangle is well represented.

It’s in the public top 50 but not the overall top 100. It’s all good though. Give it a year and golfers who haven’t seen it in awhile will be blown away. However to be honest, it did pi$$ me off a little to be behind some of the courses ahead of it.

It has been on the list and was in a couple of the subcategories. I wonder if the fact it still doesn't have a permanent clubhouse after being open about 10 years is a factor. And sometimes the bunkers get washed out. But it's my favorite course in the area. I couldn't believe Brook Valley in Greenville made the list. Last time I played there about 10 years ago I swore I would never waste my money or time there again; the "greens" were awful, tees were bad, and the layout is so tight you about have to use 5-iron to tee off on about a third of the holes that aren't par-3s. McConnell must have made some big strides there.

I used to work at Forsyth CC, and it is always in great shape, but Tanglewood is a much better course.

Cutter Creek finally opened there clubhouse although it is not anything spectacular. It's about the same size as the house they were using as the temp club house. I do like playing there as it is never crowded. Greens are usually pretty fast and and in great shape. I will have to say their homemade toasted Pimento cheese and bacon sandwich is the best I have ever eaten also!

Brook Valley should not be on the list. It's an ok course but not close to Cutter Creek, Belmont Lake or Bienvenue. It's not even as nice as Ironwood (and I don't like Lee Trevino or Ironwood).

They opened a clubhouse of modular units, but it's not the multi-story brick clubhouse beside the lake on 18 that they had a rendering of. It's more a golf shop and grill than a clubhouse. I hope they keep making strides because it is a great course.

Have you been to Brook Valley lately? Just wondering if there have been any major changes. Again, with my limited time and budget, I'm heading to Cutter Creek when I play.

Not since the new ownership took over and they belong to the network. I heard it got really bad now they are trying to get it back up. I did play Greenville CC not very long ago, nice facility but on the wrong side of the railroad tracks. Not long for this world I fear. Course is only 6300 from the back tees. Went over and looked at Ironwood. Still have bent greens. Don't like that course but it is still better than Brook Valley. The best "course" in Greenville (believe or not) is Bradford Creek (design wise). I don't think that course is long for this world either. Billy Casper Golf has a bad habit of running courses under and the city council doesn't want it anymore

^Good observations. Sounds like you live in the area. Agree with all you said. Ironwood is too wet, especially down by the river. If Bradford Creek had the money to switch to bermuda greens, fix the bunkers and just do general maintenance, it could be a nice course. It was those things when it opened under private ownership, but headed downhill when the city bought it. With its propensity to flood, it's not good for much other than going back to farmland.

I've pretty much played almost every course east of 95 from Duck to Wilmington. I have not played the Palmer course in Edenton. Along with Tanglewood, that's on my short-term bucket list. The Ross muni in Wilmington is outstanding. It was redone but you can still tell it's a Ross course. If your looking for a decent eastern NC place to play other than what was mentioned, give Lane Tree a shot in Goldsboro. Next to a river so it floods also. Wilson CC is also open to the public. I haven't played it but have heard it was very nice.

My take having played 40% of them.

Underrated

Tobacco Road - Not on the list, should be about 20th

TPC Piper Glen - Not on the list, would have about 40th

Tanglewood - Not on the list, would have about 50th

Overrated

High Point(Willow Creek) - wouldn't have in top 100

Old North State - good but not a top 10.

Trump National - Nice but not the 23rd best, more like 70th

MacGregor Downs - wouldn't have in top 100

Based on the "Top 50 You Can Play" list

Overrated:

No 8 - WAYY overrated golf course...without Pinehurst attached to the name it's a middling course IMO

UNC Finley - well conditioned but the course is nothing special

Legacy Links - again, it's nice but shouldn't be in the 30s

Forest Oaks - an absolute joke it's in the Top 50....wouldn't pay $20 to play here based on the condition of the golf course

Underrated:

Bryan Park - should be ahead of both UNC and No 8 IMO...probably should be pushing the top 10

Tanglewood - I assume they haven't taken the redesign into consideration because again, it's much better than both Finley and No 8

That's why course ratings are a lot like rating blondes vs. brunettes. I love #8. Always have. I think UNC Finley is a fantastic course. Can't say much about UNC, but I do like their golf course. Duke and NC States courses are just as nice, imo. I absolutely can't stand Tobacco Road, a ton of people disagree with me. Again, potato-potahto.

I totally get it. The rankings are there to create discussion and debate. Same reason they do preseason football rankings in April.

I think my biggest issue with #8 is that before I played it everyone built it up into this magnificent course. They kept building it up that it just couldn’t live up to the hype.

Understood. I felt the same way when I played TPC-Sawgrass.

Have played Bryan Park and Tanglewood. Both are good courses, but not on the same planet as Number 8. Just my opinion. They are good courses, but Number 8 is far better conditioned and the greens are better by far. Far superior. It is a top tier course and the others are good.
