SCGA Mid-Am Qualifier tomorrow at Rustic Canyon.

Yikes: 25 mph sustained winds in the forecast, which means gusts to 40 to 50. Top 13 of 90 will advance. Will be 81 or so, I bet. 40 to 50 gusts are just stupid.

Three years ago, my buddy and I played in the SCGA Four-Ball qualifier and shot 78, best-ball!!! And we Qualified!! Same conditions: Sustained 25, gusts to 50. Brutal. Hard to even walk directly into a wind like that. I couldn't reach either of the par 5's in THREE SHOTS that year. Driver, 3-wood, 3-wood, 60 yard wedge.

I will need to be in "full grind" tomorrow....

How’s the hip?

I played Saturday and Sunday last weekend. It was cold and my hip hurt, but the ibuprofen seemed to be working to minimize it. Shot 72, 71 on my home track, which is easy: 71.3/129.

Good luck, play well

It was not to be. I grinded my a** off to shoot an 89. Highest competitive round ever. Gusts to 50 miles an hour today. 85 qualified 86 was alternate. I have never seen scores that high qualify for a SoCal event. It was just brutal.

I had a putt today that what barely moving as it approached the hole. Like almost stopped. Then... gust. Off the green down the fairway. One of those days. Not much you can do except do your best.

Will post the link for scores shortly.

I saw the scores, did not look like much fun. Some really good players shooting well over par. Props to all those that finished, looks like a lot of guys did not have the guts.

First Tournament of the year for me next weekend (23-24)a local city tournament here in the Bay Area. Hate to admit I am not prepared, but will be sharpening up the short game leading up to it. Thankfully this is my "home" course

This is more of my get my feet wet before I start signing up for rest of the qualifiers this year.

My current plan leading up: 1. shortgame: putting, chipping, pitching, sand. 2. Play a round with some pressure/challenge 3. Practicing different variety shots on the range.

I am curious what others do, also to people who go to the gym regularly, do you guys taper down? I usually lift "heavy" (big 3 squat, dead lift and bench)and do some mobility stuff. but I am thinking I need to do some light work, cardio and some mobility work week of the tourney.

I signed up for the the state Am and the GAM qualifier, the senior/mid am partner event, the state 4 ball, and am running a scratch Publinx team again with 7 matches over the course of the summer + playoffs if we make it. Will have another 10 or so rounds at the club that are important so somewhere between 20-25 rounds to "get up" for. Still trying to decide on the state and US mid am, if I do the state event there is a really good 3 day right after it on one of the best courses in the state.

The week of a tournament I have learned not to lift, but focus on flexibility only. I am not Brooks and I'm 46 and don't recover like them. My body is stronger for the recovery time. A few days of dedicated flexibility work and I feel awesome.

For me the focus going in to a tournament is driver (weakest part of my game mentally), short game and putting (strongest part of my game). If I FEEL like I am going to drive the ball well, then I have a lot of confidence as I know I will putt well.

Good luck, enjoy the 'warm up' event and learn from it.

Did the course get close to unplayable? I haven’t played their but heard about the green complexes, I would imagine with that wind balls must have been rolling off greens.

I had two putts that basically stopped at the hole that were blown off the green 10 to 20 yards down the fairway.

They came very close to canceling it.

I’ve played in one of these same SCGA events and it was close to same. They try to set set these courses up as hard as possible and then don’t adjust it based on the forecast. SCGA needs to do a better job of making changes on the fly to keep it fair, move some tees up, slow down the greens, adjust pins.

Finally checking back in to see how this thread has been coming along, it's definitely interesting reading, thanks again for starting it Obee!!

The reason I had been away is that checking it whilst I was not able to play had been upsetting me...I'm a Millennial, so it doesn't take much...but my ribs are finally in a decent enough state where I felt able to hit some balls today. It was only 30 balls but I haven't hit any since before Christmas (before I broke two ribs, I had been suffering from a trapped nerve in my elbow) but it was so good to be back even though it was 35, 25 mph winds and the rain was coming in underneath the range roof. Hopefully some balls tomorrow and I can start concentrating on getting back out onto the course and then shaping up for the competitions that I am booked into.

I played my event this weekend

Shot 81 and 82

A lot of doubles (I had to re tee or drop a number of times).

leading up to the tournament I found that all I was hitting was this pull cut shot. So I went with it (I usually play a push draw :open_mouth: ). Thankfully I had somewhat of a short game. I got up and down a lot for pars and doubles lol.

I was actually really proud of myself despite my scores because from my past experiences in tournaments 5+ years ago. I am usually the type to dig myself into a deep hole mentally once things went south. I kept level headed throughout the day, and let things kind of go regardless of the outcome. I went in with no expectations and just focused on the what I thought was the "process" (step back, pick my target, visualize shot, and put a good tempo swing on it). with that said I still made a number of mental mistakes.

One thing that stood out for me, is I did not have a "go to" shot when I did not feel comfortable. Something I want to work on for next time.

Winner shot 71-71. The course was not too tough except for the first day the finishing holes 15-17 played tough constant 15-20mph left to right for the later groups. trouble on both sides. one guy in my group carded a 9, another carded a 9 on a different hole (btw I got to play Mavrick Mcnealy's little brother, great kid and great game). 2nd day was definitely a day for low scores, so no excuses you just needed solid shots and putts to go in.

Low scores for each day 71 (even) for first day and 67 (-4) second day.

I will be playing in the NCGA 4 ball qualifier next at Metropolitan in Oakland,CA and soon after will participate in the Cal state am qualifier at San Jose Country Club. Very excited to work on some things that I learned this past weekend and see if I apply it to upcoming tournaments

I am going to sound like a golfwrxer now.... I am still longer than the young kids LOL

Just got my confirmation for The Kelly Cup at Lakeside Golf Club. Favorite tournament of the year. Course is always immaculate and set up like a tour event: Firm greens running at 12 - 13; thick, heavily-oversdeeded ryegrass rough; and super-tucked pins designed to keep anyone from winning the "net par" bet.

Field always includes some of the very best mid-ams in California, including many-time champ Tim Hogarth, Corby Segal, Tyler Crawford, Dan Sullivan, and many more. The field usually goes about 40 players deep with 0.? or below handicaps. My best finish ever is 5th two years ago. Looking to have a good showing this year even though I'm not playing nearly as much as I have in the past. Last year was T2 after round 1 with a nice 72, and then BAM, 81 and I missed the cut. Was just an awful second round. LOL.

It's hard to do the course justice for the Kelly Cup. It's just fantastic. And super tough -- though not as tough as in the past, since they added more shaved areas and removed quite a few trees. There's usually only 1 score or so under the par of 70 the entire tournament -- that's how tough it's set-up. For normal play, It's not at all uncommon for a solid plus-capper am to shoot 66 or 67. Watched a buddy shoot 64 there like it was nothing. Not in the Kelly Cup, though.... LOL

Looks like there are already 50+ guys with an LI of 0.9 or below in the field. Should be over 60 by the time the field is set. Nice field, including two guys who only recently got their amateur statuses back who still carry indexes in the +4 range. Will be fun to compete. :-)

Wow that’s a deep field!!! Not just a deep field ... all sticks!!! Fun!

I just played the NCGA 4 ball qualifier at metropolitan golf links, we qualified at -3 T4 (cut was +1 low was -7) .... get to play spyglass!

I’m finding more of my weaknesses as I play more tournaments.

I’m starting to realize how terrible I am off the tee lol

And putting isn’t sharp the whole round.

More grinding for me

You should see the course for the Kelly Cup. So, so tough. Most years there is only one round shot under par the entire tournament four(?) years ago I was fortunate to the the only player to break par in any of the three rounds. I will never forget that day. :-)

This would have been 2004-2006. Somewhere around there.

They always had the course dialed in for the event. But not crazy. The greens were quick but not fast.

Always loved the second shot into 1, down the hill to start the day and the downhill three par, I think it’s 7 which is claustrophobic it’s so small.

Very fond of those days and that course.

Played a practice round at Corica Park South today, for the May 8th NCGA Mid Am qualifier. They've done an amazing job. Conditions were excellent. Greens are still very hard as new but the surface was immaculate and the fairways in great condition. A very good muni and at $74 isn't expensive. Green complexes have a lot of slope. Looking forward to the qualifier. So done with net tournaments at my club.
