Charlotte Mid March

The public courses are pretty mediocre. Are u at a private club where your pro can call and get you on somewhere? Also nothing will be in “good shape” as it’s dormant.

Utter BS. Lived in Charlotte 25 years. Really, really good public courses, you just have to be prepared to drive since they are all over the place.

1) Verdict Ridge 2) Eagle Chase 3) Red Bridge 4) Rocky River 5) Carolina Lakes 6) Springfield.

It's been extremely wet in NC. Hopefully, it dries out a bit by then. Also, courses with bent greens might start punching greens around then. Make sure to check.

Want to play Sunday ...... which course drains the best ?

Eagle Chase, without question. It's a hike but well worth the drive.

I’m going to be staying in Denver so Verdict Ridge it is. Looks like really good reviews

Not quite bs. Those courses are solid but not great. I have spent a lot of years in the Raleigh area and those are much better overall.

Do you think it's better to play something like Verdict Ridge or make the trip out to pinehurst area and play something like the Dormie Club, Pine Needles, or one of the Pinehurst courses? I'd have about a 2 hour drive back to Charlotte for work the next day but might be worth it?

Can't answer because in 25 years in Charlotte I went to Pinehurst once or twice because I saw no need since the courses in Charlotte were good enough to make staying local a no-brainer.

Just a disagreement. The first 3 - Verdict Ridge, Red Bridge, Eagle Chase - are great courses. Never met a soul that played them and didn't think so...

I think it all comes down to how you define great. Great as compared to other public courses in Charlotte, sure. But not great in the scheme of golf courses in general. At best, the better public courses in the area are equivalent to some of the lower tier private courses.

If your options are playing a Charlotte public course or drive to play something like Mid Pines or Pine Needles, you have to consider that MP and PN are consensus top 15 courses in North Carolina, while there is not one public course in the Charlotte area that would be top 100 in the state.

I think you will be happy with Verdict Ridge..however with Dormie going private next year..might as well head out and play that at least.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere PA and can tell you there are better courses there than in Charlotte. However, being in Charlotte you are relatively close to a lot of great courses.

Where are you driving down from? What's your golf ability? Scratch? 5-10, high handicap?

Pinehurst area is probably 2:15 without traffic from Denver NC. It'd be fun to play those courses(Pinhurst, Cradle, Mid Pines, etc) however that does add a lot of driving on and the price is quite high for a golf course in 'march condition' - ie Dormant.

If you're staying local Verdict may be your best bet as everything is at least a 30 min drive. It's been 10 yrs since I've played it, I recall it was solid however a lot of holes played target golf like some of which were like a 4 iron off the tee if you weren't playing the tips. I was a 4 handicap then.

Another wild shot if you would rather play a 'name' would be to try tanglewood - had the 74 pga. They either are or already completed a reno. Bout an 1:10 drive from that area. Should be inexpensive.

Again i'd reiterate it's March and quite a few courses may look the same.

I'd agree with Dr Schteeves list of best courses in Charlotte. If your staying in Denver, Verdict Ridge is the closest and best option. All courses are very wet right now and will be dormant.

At this time of the year I'm not sure it would be worth the added time and expense to drive to Pinehurst. Rock barn in Hickory might be another option but they might be fully private. Its been a couple years since I've been up there.

Piper is a really solid golf course. It's very playable as well. Only negative i'd say is that March/April is the worst golf conditions for most courses as it's just trying to come out of dormancy.

Man, Piper was fantastic! The greens were really nice, just a little bouncy, but super smooth. I really enjoyed the design as well as the massive mansions that surround the course, lol. My friends and I really enjoyed it. It's pretty wide open, too. I do love me some Arnold Palmer courses.

Yeah - not a bad hold on the course. 13,14, 15 are some really solid holes.
