P790’s going to high help

Mickeyblue12

Recommended Posts

Recently bought a set of P790’s with the modus 120 stiff shafts to help get back some distance lost over the years. My previous set was Mp 33’s with s300 shafts. I hit my 33’s with a nice penetrating ball flight (7 iron 160) but only gained about 3-4 yards a club with the P790’s which is not what I was looking for ,and they go to moon. I recently switched back to the 33’s and I’m back to the penetrating flight I like. My question is would this be because of the modus shaft and would reshafted the p790’s to s300 help get me a more penetrating flight? Don’t want to spend money reshafting them if it won’t help. Any help would be appreciated.

well, the irons are designed to get the ball up in the air with very little spin; so much so they are lofted very strong to help counter this issue.

finding a lower launch shaft will definitely help -- but hitting a really low knockdown type shot is tougher with clubs like the P790 (IMO, YRMV)

Reshaft 1 club (7-iron, or 6-iron) and see what happens. (keep the old shaft just in case you decide to sell the P790's.)

That's surprising. I used to hit forged cavity-backs and would hit them higher with more spin than my current P790s (even accounting for the loft differences). I went with P790s in a Project X shaft in order to solve my launch/spin issues, and it has worked. So I wouldn't rule out a shaft change, but as gvoel said, just try with one iron and see how it goes.

Yeah I was expecting them to be a little higher, but not super high. Thought I would be hitting the 7 more like 170-175. That’s why when I switched back to the 33’s i thought it might be the shaft. It’s doesn’t make since especially since my 33’s 7 iron is 36 degrees of loft and the p790’s are 30.5 and only going 3-4 yards farther.

What I have been told by club builders is shaft is mainly about weight and balance (solid impact) and heads are about trajectory and spin, that shafts have modest influence over spin and trajectory

PS: I hit my p790 lower and with much less spin that anything I have played (blades, players cb). Go figure?

what is "too high?" give us a number. pros hit it 100-110 feet on a stock swing. Rory can regularly get it up to 140 feet. So, give us numbers. cause if you're going from 80 to 110 feet, I would think this would be a good change, because you'll have a steeper descent angle and means your longer irons are likely landing steep too.

I hit mine way high too when I had them...especially the short irons. I had Px 6.5 in mine and moonballed them. Great club but wasn’t for me.

I think most people have no clue how high they should actually be hitting irons. Agree 100% with your post

You guys forget that 99.9% of the muni or club level greens are kept so soft that moon ball traj isn’t needed , and maybe even unwanted if you would like the ball to roll a bit after landing. Why ? To keep them alive in the heat. Guys in tv don’t usually play on damp , slow greens. Then there’s the wind . If he can’t flight them down. They will go less distance than the mp33. Just food for thought.

I came to p790 to lower my flight and it worked.

I saw different numbers and heights by shaft change during the fitting.

Good luck for perfect combo.

The 790’s were very high flying for me even with a C-Taper or DG X100 in them. The 760’s with the KBS tour is flighting perfect for me... nice mid flight with almost ideal spin.

I think it’s the shaft too. There’s just something about them that doesn’t feel right when I swing them. Thought this would just be growing pains while getting used to them.

Plus it’s tuff going from the feel of the 33’s to the 790’s. Mxskier don’t know the actual numbers on how high. But if there’s any wind at all into the face or downwind wouldn’t no what club to hit let’s put it that way. I know these pros hit it high but it still bores through the air and I’m no Rory and don’t think I’ll be trying to put it on any shelf’s at Augusta National anytime soon lol.

Before you do anything else maybe get the lofts checked? This is the first thing to eliminate before doing anything drastic like switching shafts or looking for an entirely new club. You could even strengthen the lofts to get your ball flight. Not really recommended since the lofts “should” already be crazy strong but most people don’t hit the 790 too high.

Honestly wouldn’t resort to reshafting the clubs if the ball flight isn’t working for you and there’s nothing else you like about the clubs. 919 tours or even consider the Mp 18 Mmc if you want some forgiveness.
