I played the front 9 at Grove Park yesterday. It's a fun little old school Donald Ross course. The par 5's are easy, but the par 3's all played over 200 due to being into the wind. Greens were slow, but that's expected this time of year.

I'm heading to St. Augustine today to tee it up with some buddies, and then down to Naples for the rest of the week.

Enjoy the season guys! I'll be back in October.

I played there New Year's Day. It was in pretty rough shape so hopefully it has filled in some since then. WCC has been struggling the last few years. They don't have the rounds they used to and it shows. Hope it's in nice shape for you.

The layout is pretty basic. There are 3 nines there. Dogwood and Blue Ridge are the best of them with Dogwood dragging the rear. If you have two rounds you will probably see them all.

Just noticed I listed Dogwood twice. Carolina and Blue Ridge are the two best nines with Dogwood dragging the rear.

It’s a fantastic layout IMO. Classic Ross. Several Par 4s over 450 from the tips and greens that require very accurate shots. The homesites along the fairways are a perfect pairing to a classic Ross design. The service from the staff is tremendous but not suck-up.

Looks like this thread has been inactive for awhile, but I’d recommend driving off the mountain to Morganton for a round or 2. Silver Creek is super fun and relatively open. There’s also a private old school Donald Ross too...Mimosa Hills. But I’m sure if you told them you were looking to try it out for possible membership, which is a steal for $100 per month, they’d find a member to play with you. Awesome track!

Silver Creek looks like a pretty course, I’ll have to try that one out one weekend!

Not sure about your budget or recent conditions but since no one else responded I will suggest a few. Broadmoor and Etowah Valley. If you don't have connections to get on any of the Donald Ross privates ( Biltmore Country Club , Asheville Country Club) and if you don't want to pay Grove Park prices just play Asheville Muni or drive to Waynesville Country Club for a Donald Ross experience. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for that heads up on post renovation. I had hoped that was not the case but suspected something was wrong when my few efforts to find reviews or feedback turned up nothing either good or bad. In this case it seems that no news is not good news.

I ended up playing a quick nine at Broadmoor between friend's flights land and then 18 at Grove Park and Sequoyah National. Greens were the best at Sequoyah, followed by Grove, then Broadmoor.

I feel fortunate to get that much golf in while I was down there since it rained so much. Breweries and food were awesome as always.

That's not quite how I see it.

Prior to Mandell it was a nice, but neglected old Ross. The members didn't have the cash to make it as good as the terrain upon which it lays suggests that it could have been. McConnell saved our bacon. The downside, in the opinion of many here, was he went cheap with Mandell. Many believe that Mandell did not adequately supervise the construction plus the Super at the time had lost interest. Turf was laid directly on clay in some places and the green shaper phoned it in. Three greens were so severe that the mowers routinely scalped parts of the contours. Those three were subsequently softened.

Now things are pretty good here. The new Super is super. Still, the greens will eat your lunch. Membership is growing nicely and the club is a fun place to be. CGA plays one-days here every summer . . . come see for yourself. It's a treat . . . but, oh, what it could have been. :)

I'm glad that you're happy with Mandell's work, but from the other members I've talked with, they are rather displeased. My favorite comments came from a member of more than 40 years. 4 months following the re-opening he was pleased with the changes, in his eyes the course had become stale and he was happy to see something different. A year and a half following the re-opening he was longing to go back to the way the course was and iritated at what the course had become. Once the polish of the new had warn off it was clear how bad the renovation truly was.

The membership not having the cash to do a lot of work to the course was on the whole a good thing, with too much money you have too much of a chance of screwing it up. With the money the green staff did have they were slowly making improvements to the course, most notably over the previous decade the bunkers had been rebuilt and additional green surface was reclaimed. Conditions could be spotty at time, but the foundation of the course was always really strong.

You're dead on they went cheap with Mandell, I knew that from the moment he made the intial design proposal to the membership. His proposition of placing a fairway bunker along the right side of 15 100 yards from the green told me all I needed to know. He had yet to actually look at the course before making any plans! The issues with the greens was also entirely his fault, they were his designs and it was a pretty stark statement that less than a year after re-opening they had to be re-done. I believe this was Mandell's final straw in the eyes of McConnell.

This is the first renovation/redesign I've ever seen in which the course became easier for the low handicapper, harder for the high handicapper, and increased the pace of play by 30 minutes! All opposite of ideal goals.

It was a nice but neglected ross, with a mountain of potential. Today it is nothing short of a Frankenstein that no longer fits into the landscape it was built upon.

Happy with Mandell? Not really, but we're stuck with it now. Even so, CCA is still the best layout in town. I play at Mimosa Hills in Morganton once in awhile and marvel at that old course and what they have after their renovation. Too bad we didn't use their guy.

Thanks! Looks like I’m going to be smack in between The Practice Tee and Broadmoore Links. Which do you prefer? Looking for decent grass tees and a putting/chipping green. Hope the forecast for next week is wrong as it is calling for rain almost every day.

where do you end up playing? i recently moved here and have played Muni 3 times (necessity, easy to go to) and broadmoor once. looking to get in a good rotation of practice twice a week and play a round once a week..
