Just had this discussion last week on the course. I'm under the impression that you can only be "golfing" when you're on the course, you don't "go golfing". I've only heard non-golfers and hacks say such things.....

Golf is not a verb. In my youth I never went baseballing. In my adulthood, I don't go golfing. I go play golf. :wave:

First of all, yes, reference can be a verb, and referencing is an appropriate gerund.

 

Second, skiing, running, jogging, fishing, boxing, fighting, wrestling, skating...must we go on? That's not an argument, stop trying to make it one.

 

"Golfing" though? Nope, still just wrong.

Yet, at the same time, players aren't "basketballers" or "baseballers" or "footballers", and while we do hear Tiger Woods is among the greatest GOLFERS of all time, we don't routinely hear him described as a 'golf player'.

 

Personally, I use "go golfing" and "playing a round of golf" and "playing a game of golf" interchangeably. Whereas 'golf' can be both a noun and a verb, I think 'playing golf' and 'going golfing' are equally appropriate.

Ah - but "footballers" _is_ a common term, just not for American football. What we in the US call soccer players, are called footballers elsewhere.

 

BTW, I'm in the camp of using _golf_ as both a noun and a verb. Some sports do this (e.g. skiing) and others don't (e.g. baseball).
