The No Ace Club - How close did you get this year?

Last Sunday, landed ball 12" to right of pin and ended 4' past on slope. Don't know how it stayed there as greens are rolling fast now. Obviously I missed the quick, breaking downhill putt and settled for par.

This is the closest I have ever came. Been playing seriously for about 3 years.

I'm not really in the "No ace club" because i do have 1 hole in one in my career but alas my only one came when i was 13 and didn't truly appreciate it the way i would now. Usually every year i have one or two shots either hit the pin or come to rest an inch or two away from the pin until 2018. Its the only year i can remember not even really coming close to holing one on a par 3.

Played ASU Karsten last February while on a vacation visiting some family/attending the Waste Management and had a ball on Hole 12 with the ball mark 6 inches in front of the pin and the ball 6 inches behind the pin. Dead straight line between the two, have no idea how the ball came to rest where it did, baffles the mind.

Bounced one off the pin,fell less than 3" from the hole. Thats as close as I have come in the last

5 years . Some day one will fall in !

I've never had a hole in one in a total of 13 years of playing golf. This was from August of 2018. The longest par 3 on my home course. Best I can recall, it was playing around 180 yards that day. I did make the birdie.

Played Cypress Creek Golf Club in New Symrna Beach a week ago and on a Par 3 with the pin about 158. Choked down on a 7-iron and hit a knockdown that landed on the left edge of the cup and then released 2 feet past the hole and right (couldn't see as the shot was blocked by the bunker lip, but the divot told the story). Given I have been battling the shanks this would have been a ridiculous and ironic occurrence to make a hole-in-one playing with far from my best swing.

I had one lip out last year. My 9 year old missed one by an inch two weekends ago. He landed it at the front of the green and it rolled an inch outside of the cup and came to rest about a foot past. Ripped my hear out for the little guy.

About a month ago, my tee shot on a par 3 rolled less than an inch by the hole and ended up 4 inches away. I got a good read and sank the putt.

Last year, I hit to two feet a couple times, but neither felt like they were that close. It was either a hit and release, or hit and spin sideways a couple feet closer.

 

Feel I should add I am not complaining. LOL

In 2018 I had at least 10 tee shots land within 2-3 feet of the hole, some spun back a lot further away. I had a handful go close to rolling in from further away. But my closest was within 4 inches of going in. It was a draw that landed just right and behind the hole spinning back over it, I honestly thought it was in.

 

My friend doesn't have one either, and he might be the best player I know personally. (I think he is a + handicap) On the flip side, he has two albatrosses, go figure! When I heard he didn't have any, I realized it has a lot to do with luck. Obviously skill helps you get the ball in the right place, but it takes some luck for it to go in.

I've never got an ace (played for 20+ years). I had one shot catch the left edge of the hole on the fly this year, but it didn't go down. The ball actually went 90 degrees right and I think it ended up farther away than if it would have hit a few inches left.

Played a junior match about 17 years ago. I was playing off 6 and had to give 22 strokes. After 7 holes I was 7 down and ready to walk off, but was pretty far from the clubhouse to decided to play on.

Came to the 8th, a 196yd par 3 into the wind. My opponent topped one off the tee about 50 yds. I struck a sweet 4 iron, and looked as though it had dropped, but it stopped 1" short of the hole.

Absolutely delighted with this, I saw my opponent top another onto the green and roll a 20ft putt for the half. I walked off and gave him the match.

Have never been as close to a HIO since.

22 years...no ace. Hit one to 6 inches earlier this year...landed in front of the pin hopped behind it spun back and stopped just above the hole...I thought I had it when it started coming back to the hole.

Played a scramble tournament many years ago where everyone tees off and you take the best ball. On this par 3 they were giving $25000 for a hole in one so I joked with the marshall on the hole how to make out the check when I dunked it and then proceeded to role the ball right over the hole (going too fast it didn't stop until 8' by). The sad thing is we then all missed the birdie putt as I remember. Haven't really sniffed one since.

I played in a charity scramble with my dad and a couple cousins and was paired with a group of hometown friends. 128, downhill playing 118, 110 to clear the pond with a soft breeze into and just off the left. Pin is playing front left. 110 is a full GW on the number, but I felt more at ease choking down to almost the shaft on my PW. I set up along the right side of the tee box and aimed for the left edge of the green hoping for a little push from the wind. I thought I had put to much on it and flew the green the second I hit it (terrible depth perception), but it pitched about a yard short a left and kicked over and lipped around the back end of the cup and stopped for about a 4 inch tap in. Needless to say, we ended up using my ball that hole.

I'll add a note on behalf of my wife, who likely would never be visiting a golf forum...

 

Years ago, we would play a par 3 course a couple miles from the house. We were playing one day, come to the 8th hole, 110 yds from red tees. She hits her shot left of the pin, it takes one hop and spins sideways towards the hole, some 20 feet (she was using a balata ball, which is another story altogether). The ball finishes such that it looks like its right on the pin.

 

We get to the green and find the ball is hanging on the lip, above the hole. This green sloped back to front, and normally, you'd expect it could drop in such a circumstance. But, in part because this course caters to a senior crowd that maybe doesn't hit the ball as high as some may, they keep their greens rather soft. And, there was a decent "donut effect" around the cup; it essentially cancelled the natural slope of the green.

 

My wife's ace was negated by a donut. :neutral:

Here's the irony of the whole thing... I was using TM TP MC's (2011), with a Golden Ram PW as a GW. Adds a bit of a laugh to the proceedings. With the third 5+ month layoff in four years, I haven't been hitting the ball all that well, thought I'd toss the TM's in the bag for the heck of it. Have played them four or five times this year so far.

 

A "thank you" to chisag for selling them to me a couple years ago. :)

2nd round of the year, had one roll by close enough that it caught the lip and changed directions slightly. It had a little too much heat and still ended up 15 feet away, but it still got the adrenaline pumping. Maybe one of these days I'll finally get that elusive sucker! (Totally missed the putt, of course).

Hit the stick on a par 3 two months ago and was a foot out this Friday. The last shot was remarkable as it was about 170 out, just ran out of gas. Birdies both at least.
