Aces vs. Hole-Outs

Obee

Recommended Posts

I am one of those guys with only 1 ace. My mother (a 36 index) had a hole-in-one before I did! But I have at least 40 to 50 hole-outs from 100 to 210. Anybody else out there have tons of hole-outs and very few (or no) aces?

How about players with quite a few holes-in-one, but very few hole-outs otherwise?

Remember, you have typically 4 chances for an ace every round, and 14 chances to hole out. We should expect to have 3 or 4 times as many hole-outs. I know I have 3 aces, but I have no idea how many hole-outs, I know its a bunch more than 3.

Nobody asked for your fancy logic, Dave! ;-)

My hole-out number absolutely dwarfs my hole-in-ones. It's like 45 - 1. It's just completely anomalous.

I have hardly any of either. No aces and my longest hole out is 81yds. My second longest hole-out is about 40yds.

My 10th longest hole-out is probably a 1-foot tap-in. I don't hole-out a lot. My group actually overall says that i am one of the unluckiest golfers they know. I lip out a lot of putts, rarely get help from trees, and never hole out.

It's all part of life's balance, i don't get a lot of breaks in golf. It's the penalty for being so handsome and smart i think

Wow, that's a lot of hole outs. I am 30 and have played to scratch for about 10 years now. I've played more than 60 rounds every year since 2000, upwards of 150 in high school and college. And the longest hole out I have is about 30 yards. It's amazing to me that some people have so many. Perhaps I play too conservatively, unlucky, or just not as good as I think

I just keep reading this and feel ugly and dumb - nah, he's from Canada.

Not only that, but consider how many short irons and wedges we get to hit into par 4 and 5 holes, and how few on par 3s. That should skew the numbers even more heavily toward hole-outs.

I'm still waiting on my first hole in one (see my No Ace Club thread), but I've had a bunch of hole-outs.

One thing I've begun to notice is that the structure of the green complexes that you play on plays a really big role in how likely you are to have either a hole-out or a hole in one. I now play most of my golf at a course where it's pretty imperative to keep your ball below the hole on approaches. Even though my scores aren't all that different now, I have a lot fewer hole-outs than I used to.

I'm one of the unlucky guys that had two aces with no witnesses(during winter while playing alone) and no official aces. But I can live with it. I did have an ace during a Par 3 tournament that netted me the only skin of the tournament but I do not count that as an official ace. I did have an ace for par while playing with my club pro, original ball was OB by an inch or so, only about 10-15 yards right of the pin.

I have holed out every par 4 hole at my home club, longest being 195 yards. I witnessed couple aces already this year. Lucky bast*ges! Ha.

I've had one ace, a couple of years ago. Silliest hole out was two months ago on a par 4. Horrible pull off the tee landed me behind a bush. I had to aim around it and caught another tree half way up the fairway. I tried to punch out but clipped a branch and ended up in a fairway bunker. The ball came out a bit low, clipped the lip and proceeded to roll 100 yards into the cup.

A par is a par no matter how you do it :)

Interesting question OP.

I’ve had 3 HIO’s and no idea how many hole outs. I do remember my first one though even though it was many years (1970’s) ago. Playing alone I had a 150 third shot on a par 5 that was my nemesis. I thought I hit it well but when I didn’t see a ball I spend several minutes searching all around the green. I figured I must have nuked it OB, and then almost as an afterthought I thought I should check the cup. My heart started a little pitter-pat as I walked to the cup and I had to double check the ball to make sure it was mine. My first eagle and no witnesses, and of course none of my buddies would believe me.

6 hole outs, no aces unfortunately. 5-6 hole outs I had were to an elevated green so didn't see them go in. Oddly enough, all 6 of my hole outs have also been either from the first cut of rough or the native rough, have not done it from the fairway yet.

I guess I'd have to ask if "hole outs" are full swings.

Do 30-70 yard partial swings count ? Obviously chips (or how long ?) don't (I guess).

Anyway, only 1 HIO and 2 full swing hole outs I can remember, both with 8 irons. Multiple 30-75 yard shots.

But I do have 2 double eagles,,,,,,,,,,,,,, so I guess they are hole outs as well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, so 4 I can remember
