How to replicate my golf lesson at home?

Hey guys,

I took a lesson the other day and my new swing felt good but now seems like i have problem to replicate the check points on my backswing ....and that screws up the rest of my swing.

Any thoughts how to replicate lessons and develop a new muscle memory ?

I always get an email reminder from my teaching pro with what was worked on in the lesson. I've also gotten video at times. And right after the lesson I jot down some notes of what worked and what didn't for me and what I need to work on.

Slow motion, use video or some method to validate you’re doing it properly. From lesson. To range and then from range to course - each step takes some time. It seems like a big deal to practice new motion doing it right even if only at very slow motion. Some new muscle memory is confounding!

Probably easier to focus on just 1 check point at a time. So if your instructor gave you 3 things you need to have fixed, maybe just try to re-create the 1 at home.

I keep a notebook of every lesson over the years, write down after the lesson all the key points and feelings covered. Try that and go back and review it every day until the fixes take hold themselves, or it become ingrained. Takes time, be patient. Changes don't happen overnight.

Watch golf channel late into the night and text or call the coach with an extra long message. I’m talking at least 1000 words. See if he can transcribe the whole lesson from memory. Pat yourself on the back and go to sleep on the couch with a 7 iron in your hand.

When I used to run marathons I would keep a journal of every race, training run, or gym session. I do the same now that I'm golfing: every round, range work, and takeaways from lessons in detail. Then go back over it again later. Something you write down today could prove to be the key to open up your game later on if it doesn't click right away.

It's hard in the beginning. It may take several lessons to really "feel" the new swing and to know if one was wrong or one was right. Videoing your swing could help if you are looking for specific things. When I did this I really tried to just focus on what I was working on in my last lesson.

 

My instructor always has a "feel" vs "real" moment in his lessons. He will give you something to work on for a short time after finding a fault and give you a drill. After you have hit a few shots working on that drill, say only swinging halfway and extending the arms, he will call you over to the video monitor to see what you are really doing. Most of the time what you think you are doing and really doing are two different things. Then he will really work closely with you to "feel" the right thing to help build that muscle memory.

 

The biggest problem for me is taking those things out to the course. At the range you are only focused on what you are working on and maybe hitting towards a target. On the course you really have to focus on a target, but also concentrate on distance and have the hazards to contend with. On the range if you make a mistake you have another ball to get it right. On the course that mishit has true consequences.

Thanks for your responds. Is anyone out there knows any training device that would be pre adjusted for my specific check points and lead me there, just to develop muscle memory before I go play....?

My pro has me video him talking me through the changes, I think this is optimal for both - he doesn't have to write a summary, I have a concise message I can save and replay over and over. Plus he'll send me swings of myself with old and new swing so I can compare. For checkpoints, try the app, Mirror Vision.

No. Nobody knows your check points, nobody knows what changes you're trying to make, so nobody knows of a device to help you. Ask someone who actually has some of that knowledge, ask your instructor.
