718 AP2’s First Round

Recommended Posts

Last month I got fit and went with Mizuno MP-18 SC with Nippon Modus Tour 105x. At the time I played the 714 AP2 with DG S300. I had them for 6 years and just wanted something different although I loved my old AP2’s. My experiment didn’t work out, so I traded out my Mixuno’s for the 718 AP2 and had them shafted with DGS300 with matched swing weights as my old set. Tonight I took them out for 6 holes and they were incredible. I hit some absolutely perfectly flighted mid irons and a few blistered 4 irons off the tee. In my short term experience, I think the upgrades on the AP2 line is more than cosmetic. The 718’s vs. 714’s seemed to be much more solid feeling with a higher ball speed. It may be the honeymoon phase, but I think they are significantly better than my older model.

I had a demo 714 set last week and hit them back to back with my 718. The 718 feels more like a one piece forging than the 714 did. The 714 has a funny hollow feel to it despite being soft. The 718 turf interaction is worlds better. I wish the short irons were a bit more combo set-ish (as in more bladed or truly a one piece forging) but the 718 is awesome.

718 is sooooooooooo much better than the 714, and a significant upgrade from the 716.

Damn thats a coincidence I am in the same boat as you. I have been gaming my 714's since release and I have been wanting to make a new purchase for myself to start the season and before my Summer tournaments. I have loved my 714's and have little complaints other than wishing my pitching wedge wasnt so long, I have difficulty gapping with that club. I have been interested in the Mizuno JPX 919 Tours or the new Wilson Staff Model blades. I was playing my Nike VR Pros for a couple years when I was more actively playing and I want either a new set of blades or some sort of players-forgiving iron similar to the JPX line and AP2 line. I just want to venture out and find a new set to have fun with. I also hear the Wilson Staff FG Tours are great!

I’m hearing that the 718 AP2’s is the last AP2 set Titleist will be making. An assistant at my club was told by the rep that Titleist will possibly have some big changes with the “20” releases including a replacement for the AP series of irons.

I agree. Man they feel great!! I didn’t think I’d ever stop playing my 714’s, but they got so nasty looking with brown faces, gougues, knicks, etc. It was time to retire them. I’ll still use them for practice sessions at the range.

I agree with all above. I really loved my 712s, but did not like the 716 one bit. 718 is by far the best yet.

I have some PX 6.0 shafts that I replaced on my AP2’s. I’ll sell them cheap.

I had the DG AMTs in my 716s and think that may be a culprit of why I didn't get along with them. I have generally played DG or PX my career. For me PX 6.0 was a great fit into my 718s. I would also be tempted into trying the DG 120s in a SS X100.

I have played the original, 710, 712, 716, and got the 718s last year. Unfortunately I skipped over the 714s as I held onto the 712s for quite a while as it was a solid iron for me. All of these are great irons and performed very well but the 718s have four things the previous models do not. They have grind on the leading edge for better tuff interaction, they have a thinner looking top line at address, the do not have the rubber cushion in the cavity, and they are less spinning. My only complaints if you want to call them complaints with the previous models were that they spun too much, the short irons were kind of chunky looking, hard to flight balls down with the short irons, and they had a more hollow feel to them. The 718s addressed all of these little issues for me. The feel of the 718s is classic Titleist forged as some refer to as clicky. They feel like a one piece forging. The short irons are a lot smaller looking and a ton easier to flight down than previous models, and almost feel like playing a blade iron. I have the AMT White in mine and they perform just fine, although I would like to test some with the PX LZ shafts.

Granted they are not the longest players type irons out there in the market, partly due to spin and partly due to lofts not being juiced, but they are the most consistent iron I have found for dispersion and yardage. I tested JPX 900 Forged (which would be my second choice), Mizuno MP 18SC, Callaway X forged, Callaway Apex Pro, Ping i200s, and Taylormade 770s. Some of these were definitely longer, spun less, and may have had softer feel, but the 718s were the best in an overall comparison for me. For me they are just a solid iron that produces consistent results throughout the entire set. Not to mention the long irons are fantastic and forgiving! My only regret is not getting the 3 iron with the set, which I would like to add. However they are hard to find as most sets are 4 or 5 through wedge.

Best of luck to the original poster and my your honeymoon phase last a long time with the 718s!!

I have been really happy with the 714s going into my 6th season with them. I have never tried the 16s or 18s so I may have to do that at some point. I'm also intrigued by the proposed changes to the line for the next series.

If this is true this would be very interesting! I will hold off to see what the 720s will look like. If they are not up to par, I will go with the cheaper 718 set. Titleist changed up the woods this year, so I am anxious to see what the irons will look like.

We should see some info soon.. they normally get their fall lineups into their sponsored players hands close to the US Open. Who knows, they may go away from the AP2 name but I don't know why you would. If they do, the replacement will still need to be pretty special to kick the 718 out of my bag. It checks all the boxes for me - performance, forgiveness, feel, looks.

Love my 718 AP2's (have AP3 4 and 5-irons), have only had them in the bag since Christmas, I'm like a kid in a candy store every time I get out to hit balls, much less play. Congrats on the new set!

I really loved my 714 AP2's. Skipped the 716's didn't like how they looked. I was a little hesitant to give them up, but I came across a really good deal on 718 AP2's. I didn't love the stock AMT White though. Came out way too low for my taste and I just didn't have the spin to hold greens. I went with the AMT Blacks and I am very pleased. Looks, feel, performance, confidence. 718 all the way!!

I've only played the 716 and 718s as rental sets (all fitted with S300) and found the 718 a massive improvement on the previous version. The top line of the 716 makes the baby Jesus cry, and they were absolute hook machines for me.

The 718 looks far better over the ball and I found them a bit easier to control, still launched far too high for me though.

If it was my money I'd be having a set of the 718 MBs, or maybe a MB/CB combo set, can't deny the latest AP2s are a massive upgrade on what went before tho.

BTW I am shocked to hear that Titleist might not continue on with the AP2 series. If so I'd have to think pretty strongly about buying a backup set of 718's, at least the 8-PW which get the most wear.

I'm still in love with my 718's, long past the honeymoon phase as I took delivery of them in Oct 2017.

I had 714's and then 716's. Didn't care for the 716's, loved the 714's and the 718 beats them all, IMO. I also am having a lot of success with the AMT Blacks as the whites launched too low for me.
