Which St Andrews course to play if not The Old Course

I could be popping into St Andrews for a day and would like to play one of the non-TOC courses for an enjoyable round. What is the pecking order amongst the likes of the New, the Jubilee, the Eden and the Castle, or indeed the Torrrance and the Kittocks? Not Kingsbarns either.

Kingsbarns is the best alternative to TOC by miles imo.

I played Castle a few years ago and really disliked weird greens, but the design and views are nice. I may give it a new chance if I'm back in town.

Jubilee and New are really nice links courses.

I would go for the new course

Kittocks and Torrance are very underrated, with great views, and very quiet

Dont forget about the Dukes either, its not a links, but a really nice course

We really enjoyed the New Course, but other than The Old Course, didn't play any others of the Links Trust courses.

The New and Jubilee are both very good, and right next to the Old, so they have the same turf conditions. I'd favor the Jubilee, as it has some relatively large dunes on a few holes, unlike anything else in town.

I really like the New, last played it in September last year and had a great day there.

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but you could also take a little trip down the road and play Crail. The old course, not the new one.

Make the drive to Carnoustie. Shame you don't want to do Kingsbarns - incredible

Jubilee is good after hole 5 or 6. The New is pretty solid

I have played the Old Course and both Kingsbarns and Carnoustie (which is my favorite Scottish course) but just wanted to dip into the lesser lights for a change. Leaning towards the New at this stage.

New and Jubilee are very similar. I'd probably give the nod to Jubilee, as it plays a little tougher.

I'm quite surprised that a lot mention that the New course and Jubilee are very similar.

I played the New Course right after playing the old course and Castle Course and didn't like it at all.

Quite "flat", similar holes, wide fairways...it looked like a "tourist course" to me.

Instead, I enjoyed the jubilee A LOT.

Fun holes, more difficult and nicer views on a couple of holes.

I'd raccomend Jubilee for sure over the new course.

As for the courses you mentioned, I'd play, in order:

1- Jubilee;

2 - Castle Course;

3 - Kittocks;

4 - Torrance;

5 - new course;

6 - Eden (only course I didn't play but just walked)

I am surprised Eden gets so little love. It has some of the best holes and greens of the Links Trust courses. It's a shame this original Colt design was messed up with a few horrific holes, but there are elements of top class design peppered throughout the course. The front nine alone is well worth a go. The Eden also has the advantages of being cheaper and quicker to play compared to the Joob, Castle and New courses. I haven't seen the badly needed clearance work on the New, so my preference would be Eden with the New and Castle right behind it. Although I slightly prefer Crail to the New or Castle, but it's not worth the hassle of renting a car etc with the Links Trust courses being so handy.

If I was to bother renting a car I would head for the quirky Anstruther down the coast. 9 holes with fish and chips is hard to beat.

Whatever you do, be sure to make time for the Himalayas!
