Hoping it has a stiffer handle. I don't usually get along with softer butt shafts. Fingers crossed.

Lucky dogs!! ?

Man, don’t know how to begin to thank everyone at Fujikura and GolfWRX for an experience of a lifetime. As others have already mentioned, all the guys at Fuji were awesome to get to know. They’re all gearheads just like us! Our WRX celebrities Brian and Johnny are some of the funniest and best guys you’ll ever meet. And of course, the members chosen for this trip were all cool guys and I’d hang with them anytime.

Have to still do my write up but the guys have done a great job so far, want to make sure I don’t repeat anything.

Wow - what a cool trip! Huge fan of Fujikura products, they just seem to have a lot of options that work well for me. Great crew representing WRX.. good stuff! Now I have to hunt down that 85g TR shaft :)

Tai, you should’ve been on this trip. You would’ve appreciated the tour of the proto section of their new building and the Enso system they demonstrated for us. Pretty mind blowing the kind of info they can obtain to understand the needs of a wide variety of golfers. And yes, they have special shafts only you could hit;)

The blue is not super soft in the hands. It has a soft mid section.

The tip is where the magic happens. Incredibly stiff both in torque and in flex.

I find it to be close to that holy grail, unicorn shaft of high(er) launch, and low spin. We all know, or should know that high launch and low spin is really not possible, but this is as close as i think you can get. Plus it has really good feel of loading and unloading.

Painting a shaft. Probably not how you thought it was done. We were all surprised. It gets the screened graphics and a clear coat after this base coat dries. “Pulling” it through the paint in the trough gives it a better finish than spraying, uses far less paint, and the paint layer weighs less. There is a rubber membrane with a small perfectly round hole in it that basically squeegees the excess paint off the shaft as it exits the tray.

Curious to the guys that went out there if you hit the Ventus in a fairway wood? Or what would match well for one? I am one of the Ventus testers in the other thread and want to support Fuji in my 3 wood as well.

I didnt, but wish that I had. I can see this being a very solid three wood shaft. especially in the 7-8X range.

Agreed. I can see this being an excellent fairway as well. That will be even more likely when they may or may not come out with another profile in the near future.

We all only got fit for drivers because of time constraints and if I wish to be totally transparent, I didn’t get actually get to hit the Ventus in my flex. I was the last one fitted and They ran out of 6x shafts.. I hit 6s and it was a bit too soft. I’m at 112 and not the smoothest swing. I ended up testing the speeder 661 TR in X, which was quite nice. VERY anti left. They are going to send me a Ventus 6x when they are back in stock.

I'm going to write up a little about my fitting since the other members have pretty much everything covered. Apologies in advance for the length. I'm not a very good writer and just writing whatever comes to mind.

_SS - 105-108 | Med tempo, gradual loading, high ball, high backspin | prefer lighter shafts in between S & X-flex depending on the model |

Shafts currently gaming in other clubs: _Tour AD GP-5x, Kuro Kage XT 50 TX, CK Pro Orange 60 s_

As someone that doesn't fair well with indoor fittings, I came into this hopeful because I was getting fitted by the manufacturer of the "engine" portion of the club. IMO, slightly different because of the focus here. Having the Speeder 569 TR S-flex tipped an inch in my Flash SZ for a short stint, my next purchase was going to be the Speeder 661 TR and honestly wasn't even going to consider the Ventus until I started reading some good things about it. One of the first questions I asked was "where is the Ventus made". Being a JDM junky I sometimes get hung up about that. My recent experiences with the whole Honma models MIC vs MIJ didn't help, especially with their Vizard shaft line. I even went as far as calling in a favor from a friend in Japan to get the latest Honma TW-747 drivers from Japan to ensure they were made there. I was pleasantly surprised Fujikura has a great relationship with Honma and had no problems getting their different sleeves/tips.

So Marshall, their master fitter asks some questions then has me hit my Honma 460 & 455 drivers with the FP-6s and FS-6s shafts. He has me try the 569 TR in the S-flex. Not the most optimal numbers and at one point says to me "too little spin". I was a little confused because I'm always searching to lower my spin without having to go to a heavier shaft. So then puts in the Ventus 5s. The first thing I noticed with my initial practice swings is the sensation of being on rails. The weighting was different than I've tried in the past and took no time grooving this shaft. Marshall then starts throwing all kinds of numbers I was getting and honestly, not being a numbers guy, only heard "ball speed went up to 160". Wait, wait, wait ... what was that? I don't know what my SS was at that day but I know I I'd be happy with 150 BS. I've requested my fitting numbers but not sure if I'll get them. I do recall backspin numbers dropping to the 2000-2400 range which was great for me.

Quick lunch at the course and off to play The Grand. As expected, the first 2 holes I bomb my drives which reaffirmed what I saw on the launch monitor. I was a little uncomfortable with the high launch I was getting but will have to see what it's like on my course back home. Then I start going at it too see if the shaft can hold up. Sure enough, my dreaded miss (snap hook) resurfaced and after that, it was difficult to get my swing back for the rest of the round. I'm going to say I was tired from all the balls we hit back at Fujikura and the big lunch we had.

With all that, I think I may either need to tip it or maybe move to the X-flex. We'll see. Regardless, Fujikura has made me a firm believer of the Ventus shaft. The last shaft that I really got along with was the MRC CK Pro Orange but it was missing something for me. I realized it was the typical Fujikura kick I've grown accustomed to in all their higher end Fujikura shafts. What I love about the Ventus is it has a tighter version of that kick. Can't wait to get more time in with my new friend.

I'm glad that WRX was down when I tried to sell my Ventus, because I gave it a second chance and I've never been driving the ball better. I'm usually around 50% fairways and have exceeded that for three straight rounds on a narrow home course.

Im really close to pulling the trigger on either the 7 or 8X for my M5 3w. I just need to figure out which weight to go with. I’ve thought since the launch of Ventus that it would be a great fw shaft.

I wanted to put together a write-up of the trip, so this may get a little long-winded. It’s tough to write in much detail during the trip, so I want to offer as much as I can here. Bear with me. (Evidently it is too long for one post, so there will be multiple parts)

Part 1:

First off, I want to say a hugely sincere THANK YOU to both GolfWRX and Fujikura for the opportunity to be involved in this trip. I enter these giveaways all the time, and I always enjoy following along with these trips, but I did not expect to be selected for one. When I saw the original email come in from Brian, I let out a huge Tiger fist pump in the office. I have always been a big fan of Fujikura. The first Fujikura shaft I played was the Rombax P95X, and that is still in my fairway to this day. I have played multiple Fuji shafts in my driver. I had a Fuji Pro Tour Spec 83X in before I moved to the ATMOS Tour Spec Blue 8X. That shaft never left the bag since the day I got it, and it was my gamer that I brought on the trip to compare new shafts to. I also play the Fujikura Pro Tour Spec 95i X flex graphite shafts in my 3 and 4 irons (I won’t lie, I was inspired by Brooks Koepka here.) Will Peoples built those for me a couple of years ago, and I haven’t even thought about replacing them. I have flirted with the idea of replacing them with the Tour Spec 115 version of the same shafts, but I get pretty good speed with the 95s, so I think I will stay put. All that to say - I was already a big fan of Fujikura and their offerings, so this was an ideal trip for me to get picked for.

On to the trip itself.

Cody (QuigleyDU) and I were the first ones to arrive at the airport. We met up and wandered around the airport for a bit before settling in and waiting for Brian Knudson and Scott (Jagpilotohio) to arrive about an hour later. Once they got there, we shuttled over to the rental car area and got on the road to Carlsbad. Jake (Endy) came in on Saturday to visit family over the weekend, and Sam (4rheel) lives in California. Sam was nice enough to pick up Jake on his way in, and we were all en route to the hotel in the SWEET mini-van. I know Brian really enjoyed driving that thing around all week. We all checked in to the hotel, and Johnny Wunder was already there as well. We left the hotel and met up with some of the Fujikura guys (Eric Recher – Director of Marketing, Austin Tudor – Marketing Manager, and Chad Embrey – Sales Manager) for dinner and drinks at Karl Strauss in Carlsbad. We really didn’t know what to expect from the Fujikura guys, but our questions were quickly answered – this is a great group of guys. The conversation instantly started flowing in all kinds of different directions. I was sitting closest to Chad, and we started asking him questions on questions right out of the gate. He was open to answering anything we threw at him. One of the first things we brought up was Dustin Johnson’s use of the Ventus shaft over the weekend at the Masters. He used a black prototype version of the shaft with a little stiffer profile (but it was not a black painted Speeder 661 2.0 before anyone asks ?) Keep your eyes peeled for a possible new release, and maybe go check out Trottiegolfagram on Instagram for a sneak peek from a week or two ago. As you can expect, the Fujikura guys were VERY excited to see DJ put that shaft in play at the Masters (he had been testing one for a while). He stuck with it Saturday and Sunday, so hopefully he keeps playing it going forward. Another topic was: what happens when a Tour player calls and says, “hey, I have been playing this shaft that you don’t make anymore, and it just works perfect for me. Can you get me another one?” They have the ability to make some older shafts in the Carlsbad facility in smaller quantities as long as they still have the specific types of material layers needed to make them. They’d obviously like guys to move to new profiles that they can fit them into, but they are open to keeping the supply open of certain models. This first encounter with the group was a really good way to get to know the WRXers on the trip as well as the Fujikura crew. There was no shortage of laughs to go around (Johnny, those fish tacos were DELICIOUS. You should have ordered them.) We all had a great time at dinner. We finished up and made our way back to the hotel. It was time to get our golf bags unpacked, club heads back on shafts (I take mine out and put them in my carry-on while traveling), and get some rest before a jam-packed day on Tuesday.

Part 2:

Tuesday morning, we got up around 7ish Cali time, got everything ready for the day, and met Brian and Johnny downstairs in the hotel lobby. We exchanged some gifts. Cody gave us all some sweet Nevada poker chip ball markers, Sam gave us some t-shirts that he had made up, Brian had a WRX Koozie, stickers, and a divot tool/ball marker combo, and I made up some hand stamped ball markers for the whole group. All of it was really cool.

They shuttled us over to the new Fujikura HQ. They have only been in this new facility for a few months now, and it is a very nice-looking new space. We walked in the front doors and were greeted by a sweet “Welcome GolfWRX-ers” sign. We went into the conference room where they had some swag lined up for us on the table as well as some coffee and breakfast for us. That coffee was a necessity and really hit the spot. We met the same guys from the night before as well as Marshall Thompson (Master Fitter and Tour Rep). We chatted for a bit and then jumped in to some product details on the Ventus. We got an up-close look at the shaft and what makes it different from their other offerings (one being the enhanced straight taper design that gives the shaft an ultra-stiff tip to reduce spin but allows you to still feel the shaft load). We looked through their other current offerings in the catalog as well (including ATMOS Tour Spec/Non-Tour-Spec, Pro 2.0, Speeder TR, Speeder Evolution Series, etc). I was definitely intrigued by the Ventus, but I was also intrigued by the Speeder TR (Tour Rated) which is another newer shaft with a stiffer overall profile. We talked about the different profiles and who was playing them on Tour. It is always interesting to see who is using what (especially the guys that may not get regular WITBs done on them on GolfWRX). We talked about how the ATMOS Tour Spec was a very successful shaft on Tour last year, and Ventus looks to be on that same path. This was all very interesting, and it acted as a primer for what we were about to experience in the next room. Now it was time for fittings. By a show of hands, most of us had not been fit within the past year, and Jake had never been fit at all! So we were a prime group of subjects for this fitting. Cody (QuigleyDU) went first, and that was a mistake for the rest of us. Cody is a wild man with the driver. The swing speed was way up there, and he was just launching drives. He came in with a YS7 Nano shaft in the bag, and he was hitting it pretty well, but his launch and spin were not maximized. He got handed the Ventus 7X straight in, and man…he was absolutely mashing that thing – ball speeds pushing 180mph, club head speed of 125mph, carrying the ball 320+, and total distance of 350 regularly. Just an absolute beast. The Ventus was absolutely working for him. There is often the snarky comments on the forums about the “WRXer Stigma” of guys saying they hit it 300 but really hit it 260…Cody does not fit into that category. The unlucky one to follow Cody was Jake (Endy). He had never been fit before, so this was a brand new experience for him. He was swinging a Kuro Kage shaft. He was mashing the ball too. He is a very hard swinger, and he was really getting the ball out there. He ended up with the Ventus 7X as well, and he was regularly getting 300+ carry and 320+ total distance.

Part 3:

Then it was my turn. I’ll go into a little more detail here to give you an idea of how the fitting process went. I started out hitting a Cobra 6 iron with the Fuji Pro 95 Tour Spec shaft to get warmed up. It took a few swings, but I finally started making solid contact and was getting them out there around 200 yards. While I was doing that, Marshall took my gamer (TaylorMade M3 440, 9*, Fuji ATMOS Tour Spec Blue 8X tipped 1”, playing 45”, head weight at 204 with an extra weight (211 with adapter). The shaft CPMed out at 308, and the head spec’d out right at 9* (which I was surprised to see). Swing weight was just shy of D6 (I prefer a heavier weight – it is something that started with playing baseball growing up and it is just personal preference). Then he started asking me about my game, what shot shape I prefer to see, what shape I hit in actuality, how I like the shaft to feel, etc. Then he handed me the club back and asked me to hit a few. I hit a few out there. Some were good strikes and some were not so much. I was carrying them around 280 and they were rolling out to around 300. I hit enough to get a baseline, and then Marshall switched out the shaft to a Ventus 8X. I really liked the feel of it, but it was a very different profile than what I was used to. The ATMOS Blue played pretty stiff through the shaft (partially due to the tipping), and I wasn’t used to being able to feel the shaft that much. The Ventus CPM’d out at 278 I believe. I think I could have gotten used to it eventually, but we went to testing other options to see what we could find. The next shaft he handed me as a matte black shaft that I hadn’t seen before in person. It was the Speeder 857 TR in X Flex. I didn’t even know they made the TR in an 80g shaft range. I took a couple of swings, and it instantly felt comfortable. The TR has a stiffer profile throughout than the Ventus does, and it felt very similar to my gamer. The TR CPM’d out at 300, so very close to my gamer as well. I hit it a handful of more times, and I was able to get into a bit of a groove with it. I didn’t see the clubhead speed, but the ball speed was around 168, carry was steadily around 300, and it was rolling out to 320. The launch and spin numbers looked good as well. We thought they might be the one, but we still wanted to look at other options. Next I hit a Speeder 757 TR that was playing at 44” as an experiment. He handed it to me and told me to not look at it too much – to just swing it. I hit a couple and the shaft felt good, but I think it shocked my system with being that much shorter. We bounced around a couple of more options, but we came back to the Speeder 857 TR in X flex as the option for me. He cut it down to just under 45” and I believe tipped it a touch. I need to check with him to confirm that for sure. Marshall couldn’t have been any nicer when he was going through the fittings with us. We would hit a bad shot and he would shrug it off and say “that’s ok” when he could see us getting frustrated. He is just an all-around good dude, and he was VERY willing to work with us to make sure we had exactly what we needed. He was sure to tell us that he wanted us to stay in touch with him when we got home. He wanted us to all get out and get some rounds under our belt with the new shafts, tell me how it was going, give him feedback, and see if we needed to make any adjustments.

Sam (4rheel) was up next, and his swing was buttery smooth. Typically a butter smooth swing does not always produce distance, but he instantly surprised us all. Sam brought a couple of different Honma heads with him, and he was testing the different ones. He settled into a Ventus 5S and he was crushing them 300/320 on the regular. We were all very impressed with Sam’s swing. The last to go was Scott (Jagpilotohio). He plays his driver at 43” and uses the OG Grafalloy Blue shaft in a Cobra LTD. The length threw Marshall for a loop. He hit some different shafts at a length closer to standard driver length while Marshall hustled to get some shafts made up at a shorter length. We were on a tight schedule for lunch, but Marshall was able to get some options made up and get Scott some options to use while we were out on the course. Scott took a couple of different options home with him and is still in contact with Marshall to get a Ventus 6X cut to his specs. I think he will be able to get him fixed up, but the abnormal shaft length threw us all for a loop for sure.
