Is that because the likes of DJ don't have 4-irons?

Statistically when courses play long it rewards the players with length more. When courses are effectively shortened it devalues length. DJ, Koepka, et al are prodigious drivers of the golf ball. If they can't let the big dog eat and capitalize on that advantage as often, it allows shorter hitting guys to make up the gap in other facets of the game - approaches, short game, putting.

If DJ _has_ to hit 4i on a hole to keep it from running through the fairway or to place the shot in the "correct" spot for the next shot and everybody has the ability to hit that spot it diminishes his advantage. Everybody can hit it 250. Not everybody can hit it 350. His advantage is when he can hit it 350 and have wedge when a big chunk of the rest of the field is maybe looking at 7-8-9. Distance is the key variable in scoring. Being close to the hole has the biggest impact on the overall score on a given hole. The more distance you can cut off with each successive shot the higher the probability of the ball being in the hole with the next stroke.

Lengthening golf courses "because the guys hit it so far" benefits the guys who hit it so far.

Good point. On the other hand, you could play the US Open on a par 3 course, giving a huge advantage to the best putters and pitchers.

No argument there, but none of that means it's an advantage to the short hitters. Just gives them more of a chance - an even chance maybe. It's everyone's course. There is no circumstance where the short hitters have an advantage in golf.

Whoa, whoa, whoa cowboy. I never said "short hitters." I used the term shot-makers. Very different. I look for the guys who are accurate and can shape the ball to do well. That type of game fits that course.

I certainly would not be surprised if DJ or Koepka or the like won. Just that the flavor of game that _can_ win is more than just length.

Signed an incorrect scorecard. He would have missed the cut if not dq'd.

**UPDATE: Per the PGA TOUR's Second-Round Notes, Schniederjans was DQ'd for signing an incorrect scorecard. No specific details beyond that were provided.**

Hoping to see Lowry stick at it like this, he is far too good to have fallen as much as he did after winning the WGC Bridgestone. A win here would validate the win in the Middle East at the start of the year.
