Bethpage Black before PGA

BDowning

Recommended Posts

I'll be playing Bethpage Black next Thursday before the course closes for the few weeks leading into the event and was told that the course is playing very short at this point in time due to the "main" tee boxes being closed. I just wanted to see if there was anyone on here who has played it recently who could provide some insight in regards to how up the tees actually are. If the course is playing like 6,300 yards I may just pass until after the tourney.

I played it today. Very windy and extremely fast greens. Despite it only being around 6400-6500 yards (just guessing) I still shot a 40-46-86. I'm a 1.1 hcp for comparison.

Wow. So much for the conversation that always comes up. Could a 10 index break 100 from the PGA tees.

Based on your round, I'm guessing no way in "heck"

The answer is yes! I am a currently 11.1 Handicap and admittedly was a little worse of a golfer at that time (probably a 12/13), I played it 3 weeks after the Barclays at Bethpage Black and I shot a 93 from the Blue tee box which was all the way in the back. I shot the absolutely best round of my life.

I'm not sure how much harder it is set up for a PGA vs the standard daily setup, but I am an 8 currently and feel that I'd be able to break 100, IF the rough wasn't super crazy. I think the biggest thing is how far you hit it off the tee. The greens and green complexes are very fair on the Black, and I feel like missing a green leaves you a halfway decent chance at an up and down. If the rough is nuts and I have to worry about finding it 5 yards off the fairway, then yeah 100 probably isn't in the cards. Last time I played solid, not great, and shot a 40 on the back with a double on 18.

I have played it a fair amount (1-2 times a season) and posted an 82 with 3 3 putts last year from the tips and I'm a 4. My buddy came in from Cali and plays to around a 4 as well and didn't break 100. I think once you play it a few times the intimidation factor subsides some. Take your medicine and get it back to the fairway on some of the longer holes and it isn't too difficult.

My sense is that a 10 could break 100 if he set out with that as his goal. Playing some par 4s and three shot holes. Playing to the middle of every green. Chipping back to the fairway. It’s not a course that will cost you a dozen balls and penalty shots. If trying to pull off the heroic shots is when you’d bring big numbers into play.

I’m a 5 and last year shot 79 on my first go round in 95 degrees and gusty winds, albeit I moved up a tee because I wasn’t trying to prove a point I just wanted to enjoy the course. That included a big number trying to play out of trouble a few times when I should have taken my medicine.
