Clubs for 13 yr old boy

Hi everyone, have a 13 year old boy that is definitely better than average. He has always played with US Kids clubs. He’s about 62 inches tall without his shoes and weighs around 95 pounds. Not a big kid but he’s extremely strong for his size.

I’ve stepped away from the game for several years but he wants to start playing again. I’m really confused as I’m not sure what to put in his hands. Another set of US Kids? Flynn? Or is he ready to hit adult heads with smaller shafts? I have no clue.

Any advice would be great, thank you.

It is going to be very dependent on swing speed and playing ability. You say he is definitely better than average, what is his swing speed and what kind of scores does he shoot? Better than average to you may not mean better than average to someone else. If he is above average he needs to go get fitted by a professional club maker.

Better than average to me at 13 means a 95+mph swing speed and shooting 75-80 in tournament play.

Most kids that are better than average start playing adult clubs around 11 or so. My 13 year old has been playing Wilson FG Tour V6 clubs since right around 11. Getting ready to move over to Wilson Staff Blades 7-PW and going to stick with FG Tour V6 Irons 3-6 with a stiff shaft.

62" is also pretty short for a 13 year old. He is right around the age of puberty. You won't want to buy anything until he has gone through puberty. Puberty and growth are going to change height and swing speed.

Yes, he's not a big kid but very strong for his size which makes him a very good wrestler. I honestly don't know his swing speed is but for his size he puts it out there pretty good and then has a good short game. Being from Iowa (Go Hawks!!), when he was around 7 or so when we played a lot of tournaments people compared him to the next Zach Johnson. I walked away from the game as I took it too serious so the rest of my family took a break as well, about 3 years. He loves the game and everything about it. Could spend hours just chipping and putting. Every day he wants to play/practice so I need to figure this out sooner than later.

There's a guy down in Des Moines that quoted us custom fit clubs fitted with a Trackman for like $2k. Although we can afford them, it seems like a ton of money for a 13 year old kid. I guess you could still play with the heads and then only change the shafts as he grows.

Otherwise I could spend $500 some bucks and get him a complete set of US Kids. Even with this option there's metal vs graphite shafts for the irons which I'm not sure about.

I just want what's best for my kid. Thanks again.

PS Just realized I set him up an account here and I logged into his. Oh well. :)

From one (former) Iowan to another, it's going to be very difficult to fit your kid for clubs over the internet. At a minimum and to make a wild guess, the driver swing speed would be needed, but his height, weight, swing tempo, etc... would also be helpful. Golf is an expensive sport especially when you get beyond USKids sets. I'd certainly suggest used clubs if he hasn't hit his growth spurt yet. And if he is truly serious about golf, perhaps with something like college golf as a goal, then getting fit for clubs might just have to be done. I'd think you could find a cheaper fitting option if needed but I have not crossed that bridge with my junior yet.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

I would find out his swing speed and buy him some used adult equipment based around those parameters. US Kids clubs at 13 makes no sense at all to me.

If only someone on this forum had two sets to sell...

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.
