Re-gripping with solvents

Both actually. I spent a good few quid on different types and none did the job.

Next time I’ll use Brampton’s and I’ll also have use of a compressor (have an unused one in the family), perhaps as first attempt or as a backup!

Once I ran out of solvent in the middle of a set, grabbed an aerosol can of carburetor cleaner. I've never looked back. The straw nozzle works amazing, precision placement, no drips, grips jump on the shafts and the cleaner evaporates quickly and with no odor. It's all I use now.

I use WD40, but i don't use much. After Ive poured the mineral spirits on the tape, i squirt some WD just on the end of the shaft. Never a stuck grip with the WD. I got that tip from a video I saw years ago about how to grip clubs.

Solvent = Brampton’s non-toxic

Air = even better

I’m a recent convert and will never use another method. So easy to re-align, tweak build-up, switch grips, LOVE everything about using the compressor now

What sort of compressor do you use and how much PSI? I am going to have a go myself and it looks like 80 psi should do the trick?

Regardless of what solvent you use, the sloshing around in the grip really helps the grip slide on effortlessly...IMO. Been regripping clubs since 1990 and never had a grip get stuck halfway.

To come back on this, I’ve just regripped a new club and did nothing different, except using genuine golf regripping liquid.

The grip slid on with no issues at all.

My conclusion is for some reason the solvents I was using were not up to the task. I have no idea why...but good to know my process was correct!!

I haven't had issues with Brampton solvent, just have to make sure you get all of the inner wall of the grip coated.

But tape on the other hand.... I decided to get cute and I ordered some pre-cut strips because I thought it would be nice and easy... The adhesive gummed up and never set. I was taking grips off with my hands 48 hours later. Back to the ole trusty roll

Solvent and Tape from The Golf Works. Have never had an issue with a grip getting stuck. I've re-gripped at least 100 clubs.

I've tried heaps of stuff because I wanted a cheap alternative/option that was readily available. WD40, engine degreaser, mythylated spirits, turpentine, etc... I've normally stuck to petroleum based products and they've all worked with varying degrees of efficacy. The cleanest option option I've discovered so far has been a small brush to paint the butt of the shaft and grip tape with solvent and then spray some degreaser down the grip.

 

Only ever had issues experimenting with non-petroleum based options such as dishwashing fluid and water (heard a rumor about this). Got stuck halfway down. Luckily had a hand air pump and hand with a needle. Stuck it on and was able to blow it off and retry with petroleum based solutions.
