Japanese Great Big Bertha Epic Forged Driver - Any Info?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, a quick review on the Epic Forged driver

I’m a 2 handicap. Moderate transition and average swing speed 107mph.

At times I can crank it up over 110mph but that would be swinging out of my shoes.

Play on both local amateur and professional tour if work schedule allows me.

The driver head is relatively light, I switch the weight from 10grams to 12grams to achieve desirable swing weight. Approximately D2.5. Fitted with TourAD iZ 6X at 45.5”

Tested on my regular golf club so I know exactly my distance.

Ball used: Callaway Chrome SoftX, TaylorMade TP5X and Bridgestone 330RXS

For comparison purpose, my usual gamer driver was Epic Subzero 10.5 -1 N setting based on same shaft.

Tested both indoor and outdoor using Foresight Sports GCQuad

Course was wet and minimum bounce due to typical end of the year monsoon season in Southeast Asia.

Temperature 80F and moderate wind 10-15mph

At address looks pretty square to slight close face due to “silver” brushed titanium finish.

It doesn’t really bother me since I hover at address.

One thing that’s very noticeable is the size. It’s 440cc more pear shaped and appears deeper in comparison to my Subzero (460cc)

Didn’t have the calipers to measure exactly the face height.

The sound is definitely loud! More “Tink” metallic sound than the usual “thump” it might not please some purists.

Ball speed of the face is similar to Subzero however it’s slightly more forgiving on mishits.

Purposely hit a few on the toe, heel, high & low off the face. Resulting in different spin rate and efficiency.

Sweet spot is definitely in the middle and slightly up. Roughly 0.25” up from middle of the face that produced the highest ball speed.

Based on 3 different ball brands, some performed better on carry distance but not total distance.

Workability is definite more straight to draw biased but not severed.

Then again individual swing pattern plays important role too.

Need to put a good fade swing for the ball to fade. But it’s not my natural shot shape.

Feel is very subjective. Personally I enjoy the higher metallic sound at impact.

Almost the same feeling when I hit the 2018 XForged irons.

Will definitely do more testing by playing at different courses and conditions.

Have an EPIC week ahead

What kind of wedges are those? Vega?

AB TP 10.5*/ DI6X
AB TP 3HL / 757
XTD 19*/ Fubuki Ax
DWS 24*/ VS Proto
J15 CB 5-PW/ Modus 3 125S
X-Forged MD (50*, 56* 60*)
Spider Si/ SS Mid SLim 2.0

Any more feedback on this one? I am thinking about picking one up. This head looks like a real winner and you can get them quite cheaply now on rakuten.

Absolutely OUTSTANDING Driver!

It most likely won't be the absolute longest in distance. BUT. It is at the top of the class in everything else you could think of; feel, sound, address position, launch, workability, etc.

What are they selling for on Rakuten? I'm looking for a backup. Callaway Japan dropped the price big time but they don't ship to the US.

The used ones are selling for 250-350 mostly.

Hmmm.

Callaway Japan is down to $350 brand new. If only there was a way to order direct from Callaway.

This is the only thread I could find on here about this...

I just sorta impulse bought this to bring back from Japan with some iron shafts I was getting on yahoo auction with my remaining yen and I feel like I stole the head ($100 or so US) and I grabbed a crazy longest yard (they claim anti left shaft) for $65 to throw in it....the entire purchase was completely

Dictated by yen I had left, but rationale says anti right head plus anti left shaft should mean I am going to assemble the worlds striaghtest driver??????. I hope that ends up being the case, I need the help, my tee game is that of a 18 cap the last 3 years and I can’t get it back.....

I lead tape drivers to a D4 or so to stop myself (This may be more mental as doesn't work) from flipping it too quickly and snap hooking.

what weights should i get to go heavy on the SW? What kind of epic weights do I need? There seems to be a few options looks like round ones? My total order should be shipping from Japan this week...got that bad boy and 3 sets of iron shafts to mess with...roddio i10, attas 10s, and I got some lighter GD AD for a set I don't use much for giggles. I am going 100% carbon shafts.

14g and 14g would be heaviest combo you could go. I go 14g and 2g dialed in at D4.0 and eliminates as much draw bias as possible.

Sooooo. Wanna pick me up a Callaway bag while you are overseas? Lol. Seriously ..... Not serious!

Seriously.
