Cameron Champ lost his mojo

The guy was the media darling end of last year. Seems to have lost his game. I know he had a back injury at the players. Feel kinda bad for him. I was looking forward to seeing how he panned out. hopefully he can get it together.

Agree. Maybe he got a little spooked by all of the overnight media hype, saying things like "the next Tiger Woods",etc.. That's a lot to live up to. Easy to psyche yourself out.

IMO the media should, more than ever, start stepping back and considering the consequences of the stories and headlines they write. Especially in this day and age with social media and wide spread access to content in an instant.

...who? (i say in jest)

it has to be tough to be that young, that talented and immediately win on tour - only to be touted non-stop by GC as the next coming.

he hits the ball too far to be out of it -- he'll come around.

Its not their job to worry about what their attention does to a competitor. It is the competitors job to live up to it. He was a good story during a very boring part of the golf year. I do not blame them for jumping on it. It is their job to write headlines and get clicks.

I understand that and agree to an extent, but dubbing him as the next TW after his first win on tour is a bit over the top.

How is that any different than what they did to Jordan or Rory? Every two to three years a new player comes a long the media calls the next tiger. Some succeed, some fail. It's part of how the sport works.

Doesn't make it right though.

In this case, I don't really see it as right or wrong. If you live up to the hype there are big dollars that come your way and you are rewarded. If not, they move on to the next big thing to see if he lives up to it and the dollars move along with the story.

So hype is one thing, and living up to it can be very profitable.

It's as wrong to write him off as some people are doing here as it was for people to hype him up. I mean he's a 23 year old with a PGA Tour win, that's pretty good. His swing is a sight to behold in terms of the smooth generation of power. He'll figure it out, probably won't be the next Tiger Woods but could be a very good player.

I am not writing him off. In fact, I am just sad that i dont get to watch him swing the club is all. I would love for him to be featured more and get to watch him play the weekend. At this rate he will most likely be playing the Barracuda in Reno, NV and I will get to watch him in person.

I don’t have any insider info, but I’d be shocked if he wasn’t in the midst of a swing change. He probably got the two year exemption from winning, listened to everyone saying he was a poor iron and wedge player, and is trying to shallow out his downswing with those clubs now. Countless times tour players have used that two-year exemption as a time to make tweaks and can “afford” a year or so of bad golf.

It could go very right or very wrong. Those changes, if he’s making them, are going to throw off his driver at least in the short term, which had ZERO room for improvement.

Its not even living up to the hype to get the big dollars, you just need to show a flash in the pan and can make a killing. But if you can live up to the hype like Rory did with his 3 starts, 3 wins of a WGC and 2 majors, you get a paid a kings ransom. The same thing happens in every sport, NHL players are the next Gretzky, NBA has Jordan/Kobe/LeBron, NFL has some insane career stats from someone in your position. See it time and time again, someone has a good season and gets paid absurd money and then disappears.

Champ has his card secure for two years with his win. Hes got time to figure it out, worst case is he gets into long drive and does events like sadlowski and makes a fine living that way and competing on tour still.

Minor event is putting it lightly. It was the Sanderson Farms Championship, one of the weakest fields on the PGA Tour.

Media way overhyped him. Maybe they were desperate for stories during the silly season. I'm not saying he can't be good someday, but right now he just has potential.

Yep, the time it buys them is priceless. A lot less grinding on Mondays week to week,=a lot more time to improve weakness.

Just common sense. You can hit it in the weeds and get up and down and beat anybody. Or you can hit it in the fairway , hit greens and 2-3 putt only and beat nobody.

Exactly. Golf can give a big dose of humility to anyone. Just ask Tiger about that. Cameron is very talented and will figure it out over time.

Does this mean we are pumping the breaks from a few months ago when people were proclaiming that he would be a hall of famer? Sure that he will figure it out, his assets simply seem to be too good for him not to to be fair.

There is an easy arrgument to make that driving is the most important part of shooting lower scores on tour. Champ is already one of the best in this category and has the potential to dominate SG off the tee for the future. If he can stay healthy he will likely have a great career.
