What was your Scotty Cameron Custom Shop experience?

King_Slender

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I let go of a Newport Mil-Spec that I'd had since they came out back in 2002 and regretted it every day. So I just bought one off eBay that was a little dinged up and sent it to the Custom Shop for a complete restoration. Knowing it's Scotty, I know it will be beautiful, but wanted to get feedback on experiences you had.

Good. I sent in a Newport 2 I got for $150 on craigslist for a re-shaft. They did a great job and also called me and asked if they wanted the loft and lie corrected back to standard, which I did not :) . Got it back in a reasonable time frame as well.

Sent them 2 putters 2-3 years ago and they did a tremendous job for both. Is CS expensive? Yep. But in my mind they are more than worth it.

I had my Mil-Spec sent about 3yrs ago - love it. https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1284522/restoration-complete-on-my-mil-spec/p1#entry12955988

with prices going up and if i send in another one - i'll probably vote for BOS golf. I have an Asian Spec Circa 62 #3 that i've been putting off on sending to them.

there's some stories on TCC with custom shop mishaps.

Sent my Mil-Spec in about 3 years ago as well. Came back better than I imagined it would. However, with prices increasing, I've been looking at other options for my other Mil-Spec and Newport Beach I want to get restored.

I used to use the CS all the time. However, with their price increases (and several mishaps that I've read about on TCC), now I would only use the CS if I'm sending in a Tour putter. Any OTR's that I want refinished will go off to BOS, especially since Cameron no longer offers the Oil Can finish or the gloss Black Oxide. Just not worth the new pricing, IMHO.

On the other hand, if you are into (and need) a new headcover, grip, and shaft, then it may be worth it to you.

Not sure if they still do this but I always thought their offer of, if you bought a new "premium" headcover and grip they would redo the paint for "free", was a good deal. I did that a few times over the years on putters that didn't need to be refinished but I wanted a new cover and grip anyway, so I may as well have it repainted (usually in custom colors) as well.

I've sent in a number of putters for work with the CS and was always very pleased with the work. I have seen the pricing go through the roof, so if its only a refinish/paint shaft I will use Continental Golf. They do a great job and I highly recommend them. As for the new stuff on the site, I've used the bay or TCC site to source these.

Agree w/most on here.  I bought a Newport Mil-Spec Pro Plat from a member here in 2017 that was a little worse for wear but otherwise in good shape.  I sent it in and didn't have anything fancy done to it.  Had it restored w/all original paint fill - I wanted it to look like I just bought it OTR at a retail store and it definitely did.  Was it worth it?  Well the Mil-Spec Pro Platinum's aren't exactly collectibles - they're blue collar gamers but I wanted a really nice looking putter and that's exactly what I got out of it.  They do a great job.  I couldn't sell it for what I ended up putting into it but that wasn't the point.  I still use it.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to send to Scotty at this point.  It's too expensive and too slow.  It is quality work though.  I've used them several times in that past, but it's just not reasonable now.  Too many other better options now.  It's actually looked Scotty didn't really want to do custom work now ...  They've stopped doing most finishes.

Pretty sad.

Yah, that one went away about a year ago

That did hurt.  Not as much as when black pearl went away, but I'm definitely sad to see it not be an option

I have sent the CS three putters over the years. All were handled in a timely manner.

1) Was an OC oval track Newport. I was underwhelmed by their then-current version of oil can. It wasn't close to the oil can that BOS did back when it was made. It was really brown and really drab. But, the rest of the putter was OK and the price (then) was fair.

2) Was a 33/350 Mil Spec. They did a super job on a full PP resto and extension to 33.75" and I made a ton of putts with that baby. Wish I still had it. Was probably the best overall value (both for the putter and the resto) I've ever had.

3) Was a Tour Circa #3 that I got from a guy in the UK. The shaft was rough and the grip was toast. The CS called, wanting to redo the finish but I said No Thanks. So, they replaced the shaft, put on a new CT shaft label and grip, issued a COA and sent that guy back to papa. Total cost? Like $100?

Those were the days.

I have sent four putters over the years. Always happy with the work and a decent value. I just wish it could start there so I could have a putter without a line on the flange and just a top line dot.

I sent in an older Tour Satin putter to have it authenticated as Tour Only. They were very communicative and even suggested a new grip for the photos to be right in the COA. Putter was returned with new grip and COA in about 4 weeks, which I felt was fair timing.

3 months?!?!

I just placed an order. Bought a cheap, banged up scotty on the bay and after refinishing, it's gonna be about $500. bit cheaper than getting a new custom scotty plus I like previous years Scotty better than current one.

Crossing my fingers!

At a minimum 3 months. May be longer.

I think with Covid-19 the lead times on the putters are much longer. They probably are having to minimize hours and do the best they can with the situation. One of my vendors for work had to shut down 2 weeks due to an outbreak.

So many better, less expensive alternatives.  I follow a half dozen or more putter restoration services on Instagram.  I will have a hard time deciding which one to use for my Mil-Spec when the times come.
