Wilson 8802 milled

Recommended Posts

So i have been on the search as of late for a 8802 style putter. I ended up finding one on ebay that i took my chances on because it was only listed as used, no photos of it. I paid right around $50 shipped. It arrived today and i am happy with my purchase. It came with a new winn grip, and the head cover which was not in the description. It has some bag chatter but the face is in nice shape. I love the look at address and with a few strokes inside i think i found my putter191zauqqp3i5.jpg

> It’s great putter and I’ve got 74 heel shafted 8802 style putters, starting with “The Wilson 8802” that I bought myself for my birthday in 1976 and it was in the bag for 33-34 of the next 36 years. Madison had Mr. Palmer sign it five day’s before his passing as we were in the same hospital(my father was also one of his surgeons), so it’s retired and the newer 8802, circa 2014, similar to yours, is one of the putters in my rotation.

8882 has a different face mill which was designed to help offline putts, 8882 was also a darker black finish with a very small sight line on the top of the flange.

Actually, the 8882(circa 2010), was one of 5 putters released under the “88 series(8881-8885)” in 2010, with the 8882 being the latest 8802 rendition at the time.

This was the first 8802 design with the dual milled face design, the first milling ensuring a flat face for consistency with the second milling adding the master grooves to promote forward spin and reduce skidding off of the face post impact. The arched shape of the grooves were to assist in promoting a slight side spin on heel & toe hits, helping to bring the ball back in line.

This 8882 also had the traditional 8802 offset gooseneck hosel design along with a sight line, which while “The Wilson 8802” had no such sight aid, however the Staff model, the 8813, did indeed have two such lines, a short one running perpendicular to the face on the top-line and one running parallel to the face on the flange(pictured).

This is an excellent putter and while I prefer the following circa 2014 release(pictured above), which coincided with Staff’s Centenial Celebration, it is only because I do not prefer sight lines or aids.

I like my putters naked, lol🤪

So, if you like a sight line, this 8882 is your baby, and if not, then the 8802 will get it done, otherwise, the set-ups are the same.

Have a great day Gents👊

Over the years, my tastes have changed regarding the sightline. Past year or so, I've begun preferring the 8813 over the 8802 / Tour Special / Golden Ram / Designed By / etc models. Previously, hated seeing that line, it's part of why I set aside my Yes Nicky, and passed on buying a TM-2.

I have gone the opposite, for the last few years i had been using mallets with big sight lines....i just feel better looking at a clean blade. Just like i grew up using from the 70's on. My buddy talked me into the mallets a few years ago and i thought...why not try? Well i have come back to the simple blade that i really liked all along.

Have an original 8802 in pristine shape plus the remake 8802. The remake is an awesome putter. Great feel, balance, and a true roll ofc the face. No ball hopping or skidding. Also have an 8813 with the lines on it, sill has original grip that feels like new. Nice and sticky feel to it. I’m going to bag it in tomorrow’s round even though it has the sight lines. Great thread!

Just refinished one of these 8802 and took it out on the course after feeling great carpet rolling it....

Most unforgiving putter I have ever held in my hands. Looks great though...On the putter rack now with zero % chance of being used again.

It's an older one and not at the moment. I may be using it at the par 3 course down the street. I got it for basically nothing so I don't really need to sell it. May start a vintage collection....who knows...Would love to have a couple vintage Ping Anser putters that have had the WRX treatment from PING...

I think this putter would be amazing with a little more weight. Very soft feel off the face on the 8802 which is fantastic despite no milling on the face.

Debating on bastardizing it and taking a drill press and fitting in some tungsten weights in the heel and toe...

Merely adding weight to the head, like lead tape on the sole or back flange, will increase the MOI of the putter.  With identical designs, a heavier clubhead will always have a higher MOI.

I have a Snake Eyes Viper Tour putter, it's the 8802 style in black.  It's only marginally larger than my 8813, such as I'm remembering, and weighs in at 355g.  The MOI of the Snake Eyes is well in excess of an Anser putter (Golfsmith published the MOI of the clubhead in their catalog).  Surprisingly so.

I added several strips of lead tape to the flange of my 8813, it increased the stability noticeably.  I can't remember how many strips, but it was at least a half dozen.  Considerably cheaper than tungsten weights, and a lot more customizable.  😉
