Playa del Carmen in dec. course recs?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

first trip to Mexico and I'm thinking of playing a round or two there (if the wife and kids ok it). I'll be staying in Playa del Carmen and am looking for some course recommendations. I've read here that the Mayakoba is nice - quiet/not busy either which is ideal since I'll be golfing solo. Will need to rent clubs but my assumption is that all the pro-shops there offer rentals?

Thanks all!

Depending on where are you staying it would be easier to make a suggestion. Prepare to pay $150 for the round (more-less) and around $50 for the equipment.

Some courses will offer to pick you up at your hotel free of charge.

i would say mayakoba and iberostar playa paraiso.

mayakoba course conditions were top notch all the way around and you can book on golfnow

hard rock riviera course was in really poor conditions and when i played there last summer. but it was like $40 a round on hot deal on golfnow with on course drinks and snacks included.

I'm playing there in about a month (through a 'pay the cart fee only' deal with where we're staying). How are the conditions on Grand Corral? Anyone play there recently?

I am also going to try to play Mayakoba as well. I'll be asking if El Tucan is available..

i played grand coral last August and it was in pretty good condition. of the 4 courses i played, only mayakoba was in better condition than grand coral. hard rock riviera maya was the worst of the 4. grand coral though was pretty fun though, it definitely exceeded my expectations.

Played both Mayakoba and Grand Coral in February.

Grand Coral - worth it for under $100. Course was in good shape, decent layout, quick round. I would play it again.

Mayakoba - if you are staying at one of the hotels there, the rates are better. I actually booked through the concierge at my hotel as the course was sort of unresponsive. You can get a twilight rate for about $180 is what I think I paid. Conditions are excellent, but I found it a little underwhelming. Everything in the pro shop is a rip off. Having said that, I would play it again but not at the full rack rate.

yes, i'll be staying in one of the hotels in mayakoba, hope i can get better rates. i've seen the tournament on tv and a couple of picture online and it looks stunning.

when i played mayakoba last summer, i booked it through golfnow for $153.49 and grand coral was $97.49, both as singles.

i played grand coral as a single and teed off at 7:30am and i think i finished at like 9:30am, i dont think i ever saw anyone except the maintenance crews. one of them had been collecting random balls and sold me a dozen for like $4.

my original time for mayakoba was 11:30am but i got there around 10am and they let me start early. it was pretty busy on the front 9 so they had me start on hole 10. yeah mayakoba is definitely worth playing at least once. they've got some unique hole layouts. only 2 holes though "on the beach" and they are basically short par 3s.

Just got back from playing Grand Coral and Mayakoba. Both were in great shape and had an amazing time. Happy to answer any questions you have, Joselo, while the trip is still fresh in my mind.

Also, for Grand Coral - I made a noon tee time to get afternoon rates.. I showed up early to try to get off earlier (to spend more time with the wife at the beach), but they wouldn't even check me in until 30 minutes before the tee time, to keep me from going out early. I got paired with a guy from Canada who booked a discounted round on teeoff for maybe $100? He and I were practically the only ones on the course and flew through the round in less than 3 hours...

Played Hard Rock. Facilities and equipment a little tired but the course was in nice shape. Staff excellent. Cart girl came around at least 5 times. If you order food through her, they bring it out to you on the course.

Rented clubs were cobra. Fairways not as narrow as I expected but was spraying the driver so after a few holes, basically just played with the irons.

Greens are wide but short so difficult to hold.

Watch out for the coatis on the 11th tee. They have no fear and tried to get into our cart while I was standing there.

Booked through teeoff.com and honey found a coupon so ended up paying $85 per person for all inclusive with shuttle.
