3-5 wood vs 2 Hybrid

Hey Guys,

I went out for a demo on the 17° G410 Tour Hybrid.

For the most part i found that it didnt quite give me the range I hoped for. i hit my 3 iron 200-220yards depending on how well i strike it and i was looking for something that would give me maybe 220-245 yards of fairway. Felt that the hybrid i tested was more like 210-230yards which doesnt really help me that much more. I did however love the club.

So do I:

1. Set it to 15.5° and expect to hit it longer?

2. Look for a 3/4/5 Wood. From what i've gathered I can expect to hit a 5 wood longer than a 3 iron or a 2 hybrid? is this statement true?

There are 3 things to consider with a fairway/hybrid: loft, shaft length and spin. I've always found it boils down to the upsides of a big, friendly 5w head versus the benefits of a hybrid's shorter shaft.

If I were looking at two clubs of the same loft, say 18-degrees then I'd expect the following tendencies:

Hybrid:

Shorter shaft will probably = more consistency

Heavier shaft may = lower flight

Shorter club may = shorter distance

Hybrid head design may = hook

Smaller head may = more sensitivity to impact and thus more variation in flight

5w:

Longer shaft = more speed

Big head = more forgiveness

Longer shaft = less control

More spin = higher ball-flight subject to wind

For your distances, it really sounds like you probably want a 3w.

I switched from a 17 degree 4 wood to a 16 degree 2 hybrid and I've been very happy with the change. Hit the 4 wood higher anf land it softer, carrying it 225 vs 210 with the hybrid, but often miss dramatically both left and right. Much more accurate and consistent with the hybrid. Also, the hybrid runs out more so total distance isn't that far off (235 vs 230ish). Ultimately I hope to groove my FW wood swing and introduce a strong 3 wood to the bag, to have a 250 club along with the 2 hybrid as my 230 club.

I just moved a 16 degree M3 2-hybrid into bag and gave my 3 wood the boot. I hit the hybrid more consistently, longer...due to better strike and more accurately. There is nothing about the 3 wood that is an advantage over the 2H for me. I honestly am surprised I didnt do this sooner. I believe this club is going to put most par 5s into high % birdie holes.

I remember your thread about the 2H. I'm glad you're hitting it well dude. What shaft is in yours?
