Bump and run or fly it to the hole?

Recommended Posts

Ok, we've all been faced with that shot where you can play either a bump and run or a fly it to the hole. Most of these occur around the green and depending on a number of factors you might play one versus the other. The question is, what works best for you and in what circumstances would you choose the bump and run over the fly it to the hole or visa-versa.

All things being the same he bump and runs it. He lobs over bunkers or short distances where bump and run is precarious due to lie or delicacy. There is the instance when Jack Pearsall is hitting to a robust pitch towards the golfer green and the grain of the grass will kill a bump and run shot, so he lobs there too.

Almost always the bump and run is easier for me to pull off unless the green has some odd sloping or ledge. If its just straight I go low and roll it up.

Depends on lie and the green. My home course has a lot of elevated greens and they also have a lot of slope. Sometimes it's just not an option.

ย

I think also depends in the clubs. My blades I will do that all day. My g410 not often. Usually run a 50 degree along the ground.

It's funny...the bump-and-run is an easier shot, but the reason I never use it is because I don't trust my distance control because I never practice the shot...so instead I play a harder shot that's easer to REALLY screw up.

Can everyone also mention what club you use to fly it to the hole and what club you use for a bump and run (assuming OP is ok with this?)

I have not practiced the bump and run enough, so I have trouble getting the ball consistently the right distance. I use a 56 or 60 degree to fly the ball to the hole. If I were to try an bump and run, I would use a 50 degree, with the ball off my back foot.

I used to favor flying it but over the last couple years Iโ€™ve gone to primarily using bump nโ€™ run. Iโ€™ll typically use an 8i if Iโ€™m on fringe or fairway. Iโ€™ll go to my 54 if the lie is a little dicey, but I still try to turn it into a running shot if possible. I have a 58 if I need to hit the soft floater. Since making bump nโ€™ run my go-to Iโ€™ve found my par save percentages have gone up significantly.

I typically bring 3 clubs with me when I miss greenside, a 9 iron, my 54, and a 62. The 9 is usually a toe-down runner, the 54 a driving spinner with some check then roll-out, or a number of different shots with the 62 from a dead flop to a grabby low spinner.

ย

I typically (but not always) will use as much loft as is needed to carry all the way to the surface (Bermuda grass) of the green so I only have to be concerned with the speed consistency of a single surface and I dont lose it to the grain.

Usually flying it. Just no control when you bump it. Never understood why you wouldnโ€™t just use putter. If I want to roll it Iโ€™ll use putter. Otherwise sand wedge or pw depending on the length. Lobwedge beyond back foot for shortsided runners.

I don't do well on tight lies.

Right now some of the grass isn't completely out.

My Son can still fly to the hole, or a low chip that runs.

I have some ugly shots.

100 yards- a running 7 or 8 iron. Maybe an ugly dribble with a 5 wood.

30 yards off the green- hard roll with a short iron.

20 foot from the green- 8,9 PW or even a putter.

Very ugly shots, but I have a 3-10 foot putt afterwards.

I go to my putter then two iron utility first; had more up and in this way. If itโ€™s a delicate short shot near the collar but in the rough, I will blade it like a putt with my SW.

ย

Last but not least, I have no problem bailing out with the super flop or mini-explosion for a 10-15 feet putt for par. I always smile when I warn new playing companions because afterwards, they mentions itโ€™s such a big swing for a short shot.

ย

Funny to me that I can stub it with a PW to 3 iron and donโ€™t care about practicing bump and runs; itโ€™s so frickin boring!
