Top 5 Courses You Have Played

Recommended Posts

Haha. Ranking Maidstone over Shinnecock is blasphemy, I know. And I'm probably not being fair to Shinnecock. We played there last year, 3 weeks before the US Open. The bleachers were up which spoiled the overall visual impact a tad. Also, because of some tournament prep work, we had to play a few holes out of order. Side note: the 11th hole is the hardest par 3 I've ever played. But it was still a magical day. And, FWIW, it's probably my favorite clubhouse. Rustic and understated, it felt true to golf's origins. Really a special place. It loses to Maidstone by the very slimmest of margins.

Maidstone is the best experience I've ever had on a golf course. The setting, in East Hampton with several iconic holes along the ocean, is unbeatable. The day we played, it was cold & windy and felt like we were playing golf as it was meant to be played. To me, an average-at-best golfer, the holes had slightly more variation to them than Shinnecock. 8, 9, & 14 are as unique and rewarding as any holes I've ever played.

Haven't played NGLA. You can see it from some of the early holes at Shinnecock and it looks like a painting of the perfect golf course. It's incredible that NGLA, Shinnecock, Sebonack and Southampton Golf Club all sit side-by-side out there in the Hamptons.

Did you play any other courses in Wisconsin? If so, how did you rate them?

Top five in order:

1. Preston Trail - Dallas, TX (Elite course I had the pleasure to caddie at and play while getting my MBA...best conditioned course I've ever seen no matter the season)

2. May River Golf Club - Palmetto Bluff, SC (Criminally underrated and relatively unknown Jack Nicklaus course in the lowcountry. Awesome. Play it if you have the chance)

3. The Old Course - St. Andrews, Scotland

4. Dallas National - Dallas, TX

5. K-Club - Kildare, Ireland

Honorable Mention: Sea Island - Seaside, Troon North - Monument, Greyhawk, Twin Lakes (Canton, TX...RIP-shut down last year, but was an amazing track), Cabo del Sol

No particular order:

Victoria National

Harbor Town

Kiawah island Ocean Course

NCR Country Club South Course

Torrey Pines South

All great tracks that I really enjoyed. Also really enjoyed Troon North Monument Course and TPC Scottsdale. Enjoyed Ko Olina on Oahu as well. A great track that was a lot of fun. However not the fastest pace of play.

I played Preston Trail many years ago and Mickey Mantle was in the group ahead of us. A great course!

that is cool! Did he play righty or lefty? I know he was a switch hitter in baseball.

There are a number of LEGENDARY stories about Mickey Mantle floating around at PT. One of his golf bags is still in the bag room, just hanging out in a random stall. Pretty cool.

My introduction to Mantle was when I walked into the locker room he was walking around stark naked.
