It's not clear - are you looking for the best CC or just a good course to play?

If private CC, the top ones are (as ranked by the people in my playing groups):

* The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe (solid course, over the top facility. Played it last week and greens are great)

* Del Mar CC (very good course, opulent facilities)

* Rancho Santa Fe CC (modest but very nice facilities and great old classic course)

* Santaluz CC (very good course, facilities very good)

* San Diego CC (nice old school course, fast greens and excellent bunkering, but so-so facilities)

La Jolla and The Crosby are good clubs but the courses are so-so. And there are quite a few other CCs like Bernardo Heights, Shadowridge, Valley Vista, etc. but they're all "C" level and the courses aren't as good as the better public options.

If you're just looking for a good course, the best public options are:

* Maderas (best overall with tough course, great service. Did their aeration a couple weeks ago but it plays fine now)

* Aviara (resort course which isn't as challenging but still solid; condition good as LPGA played there a few weeks ago)

* Grand del Mar (solid course, condition isn't as great as it should be for the facility and price but still good)

Two which would normally be on the above list are Torrey South and Barona. I'd skip Torrey as they're doing significant construction right now and have 2 holes shut down at a time and are requiring carts. Barona is also half shut down while rebuilding greens and you can't play it right now unless you have their casino gold (or above) players card. Hopefully both of those will be operating regularly later in the summer.

I'll be moving to San Diego in a couple months (North Park) and have a similar question, but instead of two days, we're talking three years. I'll be minutes from Balboa Park GC and all the lower priced military courses in the area (Admiral Baker, MCAS Miramar, Sea N' Air, etc.). San Diego CC has been on my radar and would be less than 20 minutes from the house. So the question is, with all the public golf available, is SDCC worth it...?

If SDCC was closer to my house I'd join it in a heartbeat. The overall course design is enjoyable and really fits the land, as it was built before the use of heavy equipment for shaping. The greens complexes are outstanding. The bunkers are in just the right places to give a lot of challenge and are well kept, and the greens are always excellent, with challenging (but not gimmicky) contours, and they always are among the fastest in the county. They have some pretty good practice areas, and although those aren't anything like you'll find at The Bridges or Del Mar, they offer areas to work on all aspects of the game. I also love the Billy Casper connection - it's neat knowing that one of the all time greats was not just a member but very involved and active at the club.

On the downside, the clubhouse is quite dated and areas like the locker rooms are in dire need of updating and remodeling. It's of course tempting to compare the facilities to a place like The Bridges, but that's completely unfair as the price difference between the two is enormous. I don't know the exact amounts for SDCC, but I understand the club is hurting right now and offering excellent deals to join.

Imo yes

The San Diego public’s are just ok.

SDCC is a very good old school course usually in very nice condition, especially the greens

SDCC is well worth it. Best course in San Diego and a great membership.

Reviving an older thread, I just moved to San Diego and SDCC looks like the best and closest club to me (North Park area).  Can anyone comment on the Junior Executive membership initiation/dues?  Thanks!

I asked a member and he thinks it's about $15K down, $650/month and $1000/year in F&B. Probably best if you reach out and see if you can play the course if you're interested.
