Project X LZ 5.5 vs 6.0 and putting them in wedges

I have some Mizuno JPX 900 Forged irons with project x 6.0 shafts. Played them last year and always thought they felt to stout - especially in the longer irons. The wedges were fine. I also think the 6.0's are a bit too much for me unless it is mid-July and I am in med-season form. So - I demo'd the LZ 6.0 and liked them. The feel was nice - ball flight a little higher - felt easier to swing - picked up a little distance - all in all good. I am going back to demo the LZ 5.5 as well and then pull the trigger. The thinking on trying the 5.5 is that I think the regular X 6.0 is too much for me - and thought the regular X 5.5 would have been better - thus try to LZ 5.5. Not sure what I will notice between the LZ 5.5 vs LZ 6.0 other than weight. FYI - my 7 iron distance is usually about 163.

Either way I go - I am wondering about LZ shafts in wedges. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I have the LZ 5.5 in a set of JPX 919 Forged. I decided I wanted to stick with the same shafts throughout my set, including wedges, so I shafted my 50, 54 and 58 Vokeys with LZ 5.5 as well. The feel is great and going with the lighter, less stout, shaft in my wedges has not hurt performance for me at all. Better feel with same dispersion as the KBS Tour I had in my last wedge set.

@bbiggs good to hear. By chance did you demo the 5.5 vs the 6.0 - curious on the difference. Like the weight of the 5.5.

I did demo both. 5.5 felt better and I was getting better results, so I went with it. Probably could have played either though. I only demo’d the 6.0 in a 6 iron, so I don’t have a true comparison with the wedges. I knew that whatever shaft I chose for my irons, I was also going to put in my wedges, so that was the deciding factor for me. When I first hit my short irons outdoors (I did an indoor fitting), I was getting a draw that concerned me. After another range session and round I discovered the draw was all user error. The ball is back on my normal straight flight path. I’m definitely enjoying the 5.5 to this point.

@bbiggs thanks for the feedback. I did not notice much difference other than weight between the 5.5 and the 6.0. If you don’t mind - what is your speed or distance with a 6 or 7 for reference. I am going to pull the trigger this week. Thanks again. Thinking if I go 5.5 in irons I would do 6.0 in wedges as I like a heavy wedge. But if I go 6.0 in irons I will use them in wedge as well.

Sure thing. My wedge shafts before were KBS Tour 120 gram so the 115 gram 5.5s didn’t feel different to me in terms of weight...just smoother and better feel. For comparison, my average club head speed with 6 iron was 85 mph in my recent fitting but I was swinging smooth with my early season (winter) swing. I’m probably closer to 90. My standard swing 7 iron distance is 165. Good luck with whatever you decide. Would look forward to hearing your thoughts on whatever you go with.

@bbiggs I am about the same as you I. 7 iron distance (163) but a high spinner. I just pulled the trigger on the 6.0 LZ for 4 they all wedges. Will let ya know.

Looking for some help on this same topic. For starters, what length shaft should I be ordering to get to the correct flex when playing over standard?

I play 6.0 at +1/2 in my irons. I want to match my irons with them as well. The 52* is pretty simple as I only play 3/4 or full shots with it so I would throw a 6.0 shaft in.

My 56* is my most versatile club as I play most shots around the green with it and full shots. Would I go down in flex to 5.5 for more feel or is it really not noticeable? Also taking into account that I would be playing them at +1/2.

I'm out on playing softer in your wedges unless you're playing X in irons. I've played the 5.5 in the wedges and the only way you're getting more feel is if you like wet noodles. Went up to the 6 and it felt much more normal
