US Open 2019 - Worth Going on a Monday?

Invisible-z

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be in the area the weekend before US Open and am wondering if its worth it to stay an extra day and check out Monday.

What happens on a Monday at the US Open? Are big name players around (ie Rors)? Is TIGER generally gonna around on Mondays!?!

Please share you experience if you've been out on a Monday at a majors event. Thanks!

I've been to 3 US Opens at Oakmont.

The practice rounds are when you can get closest to the action. For majors, just about EVERY competitor shows up. Smaller crowds makes it much easier to see the boys hitting multiple shots. Not to mention the parking and souvenir shops are easier to maneuver.

Sunday is the day you wanna watch from your Lazy-Boy.

I've volunteered at 3 US Opens at Pinehurst. As @HateTo3Put says, practice days are the most casual, and Monday is the most casual practice day, with the smallest crowds. In my experience, Monday has the fewest players on the course, but there's still a good group to be able to watch. I enjoy watching practice rounds, to see how they prepare for a variety of pin placements, for a variety of misses, thinking their way through the possibilities. The merchandise tent is also full, not picked over as it can get later in the week.

Tiger almost always shows up early at the course for the majors so there's a better than average chance he will be there by Monday..

It's a shame that Pebble, even in all it's glory, isn't a better spectator course.....

Yes, more and higher. I think they need an upper-decker grandstand.

Yes and all of the silliness. Can you image the 16th atmosphere at Augusta?

Fred would be like:

"Okay, Okay, let's stop with the tom foolery and extinguish those cigarettes, please turn your hats to be forward-facing and sir.......sir.... please put your pants back on."

The problem is that half the holes have ocean on one side.

It’s a small piece of property, one must be shuttled in from miles away, a number of the greens aren’t remotely approachable, it’s a small piece of property, spectators are packed in like sardines and they can’t put grandstands everywhere but besides that it’s Pebble and its amazing.

I played pebble where no one was behind us so we took our sweet time. It was great but what pissed me off was that $40 per person cart fee.

I was ready for $500 green fee but that extra $80 for two of us was not prepared for and it actually left a bad taste. It's like nickel and diming to the fullest of known way.

the only time we had something close to a PGA tour event was the Johnny Walker Classic held here in January of 1995 featuring such players as Fred Couples(he won), Nick Price(world #1 at the time), Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Isao Aoki, Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomery, Darren Clark,Constantino Rocca, David Frost, Ernie Els ,Bernard Gallagher as among those I remember plus many Asian Tour stars at the time...Arnold Palmer was also here for the Pro-Am.......I was on site Monday to Sunday as one of the sponsors....all the players were very approachable Monday to Wednesday talking and signing autographs even in the range where I caught many of them... I was even allowed to hit some balls on the range then and had some pleasant words with Arnie...BUT that all changed when the tournament started on Thursday...unless they were among the leaders most of the golfers became almost unapproachable...I found Greg Norman a bit rude---MORAL OF THE STORY---if you want to maximize your exposure and inter-action with the pros, the best times are the Monday to Wednesday of the tournament week....once it begins the TV is your best choice unless you're a super golf fan and in good physical shape!!

Should have used the 50% groupon.

US Open or any major on Monday = complete awesomeness

you get close to the players, they are relaxed. Get to see all sorts of shots

Pebble in June, GTFOH, you gotta go, just stay out of the grandstands left of 18 green
