Glove performance??

Recommended Posts

I have never worn a glove to play. I just figured if I keep my grips fresh I am fine. I have never really felt like i needed more traction, or that I would benefit from a glove.

But, I have recently gotten curious. Does anyone know of any kind of research or articles regarding the benefit or lack there of in wearing a glove?

I searched and couldn't really find anything above anecdotal opinions.

I doubt you will find anything. In normal conditions, It's largely going to come down to what is more comfortable for the player. May see some differences in more abnormal conditions - particularly wet - either due to rain or sweat. Only a guess, but I'd think that mainly has to due with the fact that live skin is already (relatively) moist compared to dead skin/leather - so can't handle the additional moisture as well and still keep the same level of friction. Synthetics could potentially have the edge in those cases as well.

Nothing scientific, but my hands have a tendency to sweat. A glove instills more confidence in my swing because I feel I don't have to have as much grip pressure.

I've played a lot without a glove, and a lot with a glove. I'm unaware of any scholarly articles, it's probably not something that university students (where a lot of research comes from!) will choose to study

I think on a nice day, like 18-20C (basically if you live in San Diego), not to hot or cold....never rains etc....You probably won't gain much

as soon as you start sweating though, or get a bit of rain. I find it makes a pretty big difference. I use gloves most rounds, unless the weather is perfect

type of grip matters a lot too. A really tacky one like the tour velvets, a glove may matter less

I didnt think any Universities would publish any articles on this. But I thought that maybe one of the companies that produce gloves might. Or maybe one of the golf rags that sit on selves at the air port, even if it was just marketing. I cant really find anything though. I agree completely with your assessment.

I figured that's what you meant I was just being a bit , whatever the word is. At the end of the day probably no real reason to study this unless you're a glove company and any research they did would be full of bias LoL

It would be really tough to study grip too, like performance benefits. Maybe go out on a wet day and study dispersion patterns. Tough thing to study I think.

Well I did a search for tour issue gloves and didn't really get any results. So now I have to consider synthetic or leather.... I am guessing synthetic last longer, but leather feel softer right?

TBH. Mizuno makes some decent gloves the real feel of leather with breathability and they last quite a while 14.99 too > @QuigleyDU said:

Oh man I completely forgot that....yeah gotta go leather or some sort of close replica

I have some Callaway "tour" leather gloves that have lasted me a while.

I have some synthetic Taylormade ones that aren't much better than just using my hands

At the very least the palm side needs to be leather. The synthetic gloves with the synthetic palm almost feel slimy with the slightest perspiration. Rain gloves are the only synthetic gloves worth using especially in the summer when you sweat a lot or of course when it rains.

Glove performance is a key for me. Even a slightly worn glove causes issues for me, especially with the driver.

That's with cord grips and I don't feel as if I grip the club un-naturally "hard". I warm up without a glove and a lot of my range time is without a glove. But full swings are night and day difference with and w/out a glove.

If I can't confidently hold on to the club, then my arms/hands end up behind my body. Even a millisecond makes a difference.

I've never seen actual research or articles. I feel like it's up to the individual to decide if there is a benefit of any kind. some people's hands sweat more, get dry easier, mentally have better grip so they don't death grip, play in different environments etc... why not pick up a pack of Costco gloves for $5 a piece and try it out. you might like it, you might not, and it's a cheap experiment...

I for one like a glove for full swings. shots that require more touch I prefer without a glove. fwiw

Just another opinion, I find that the leather Mizuno glove is the best that I have found. And one reason is that again, for me they last longer than any other. Prior to this my go to was always Titleist.
