How do the 745 irons compare?

Tree Levino

Recommended Posts

765 and 785 come out notoriously low spin in tests. From what I've seen the 745 may be slightly better? How do they compare to AP2 in terms of forgiveness/ball flight etc. I've always been intrigued by Srixon but have been put off by the testing numbers and my inability to hit them outside. I don't think mats give you a true impression of the magic V sole.

The 745s are the best irons I have ever played. I have no issues with spin on them. They are quite forgiving for a players cavity back iron. I’ve only hit the ap2s a couple times so I can’t provide much insight but you can’t go wrong with the 745s. There’s a reason so many of the Srixon staffers are still bagging them.

Owned 745s and 765s and had no issues with low spin. I have heard the 785 is lower spin but did not game them, only tested. Could be nothing more than getting the shaft/head combo dialed in. The 745 is considered by many Srixon fans to be the best in the 7X5 series, though really they are all strong and it is more about what types of shapes and lines you like. Both the 745 and 785 are quite compact, the 765 slightly larger, more rounded profile.

For one size comparison, I was just looking at a 745 4 iron next to a JPX 919 Forged 4 iron and the 745 is a noticeably shorter head.

Good feedback. Still thinking I have too much $$$ out on irons (buying a house and part time work/student) so found a good set of 745 with my preferred shaft for a good price. I hear great things about them and just looking for a dependable gamer to keep for a few years.

You won't be disappointed. I still game the 745's and have no plans anytime soon to switch out. Never got along with the AP2's. Never like the feel or the flight I got with them.

Absolutely cant go wrong with the 745s, especially for the price. I have had two 545/745 combo sets, went to all 545s, then got fit for a 585/785 combo set, and just picked up a 745/945 combo set to play around with for leisure rounds since hitting those 945s pure is a real treat. I avoided the x65 series, never liked the overly rounded look.

Yeah they're $350 pretty much new. Seems like a decent price. How did you find the 745 forgiveness wise compared to 545? I don't do well with wide soled irons so I think the 745 is as big as I'd like to go. I have no problem playing AP2 down to 4 iron.

I find the 745's remarkably forgiving. I play them down to the 3 iron. I have a U45 3 iron, and prefer the 745 3i.

In the long irons the Z545s the forgiveness is very nice, my miss is a low groover and the ball still goes. The Z585 is even better as long iron option, at address its definitely more compact than the previous 5 series and has a narrower sole. Even when I play my 745/945 set I bring along my Z585 4i. I can elevate the Z745 4i fine but the Z585 has a bit more zing and is great off the tee.

Yeah I saw no spin issues on my 765/965 set when I did an out door test with them. Im someone who tends to spin the ball a lot. I have 1000-1100*iron number for average spin. More than completely playable, I was about 1000 less on average on a fitting mat, less in the longer irons but for sure my 7 was spinning at 7300ish on grass, 6400 on a mat.

X100s and 3degrees flat on my irons if that matters.

I loved my 745's, gamed them for about 3 years. Just recently upgraded to a combo set with 585, 785 and Z-Forged. When comparing the 5 irons from 745 and 785 i can hardly make a difference of them (except for the color in my case). Head shape is very similar and a big improvement over the 765. Flight is nearly identical and pretty much the exact same yardage. Really love how well it combos with the Z-Forged and 585's as well!

I started with a combo set of 545 (5i, 6i)/745s and have moved to a full line of 745s. For me they have the exact feel I want from the club face with an iron. The 545s with more perimeter kind of weighting were actually harder for me to hit consistently than their 745 counterparts.

Somewhat related, I was never a hybrid guy until I decided to give the H45 a chance. I moved to a 3h, 4h setup and feel they match the irons really well.

To comment on the forgiveness - they are amazingly forgiving for their size. I actually hit the 745s _better_ than the 545s during my fitting. Best irons I've ever played, they do everything right. I play them up to the 4 iron which is probably my favorite club to hit just behind the 6 or 8 iron. Only reason why I don't bag the 3 iron is because I cover 2 gaps with the U45 2 iron (18 degree), which is also ridiculously easy to hit and forgiving.

Srixon made me a fan of their irons for life with the 745 line.

IMHO, the 745s are the best of the line. They're a bit low profile and with all that meat in the back, they just bludgeon the ball.

I'd check the sole out in person if you have an issue with "wide" as these are pretty wide for a players iron. Good luck.

I never got to hit the 745s, but bought a set of 945s last year. Easy to hit blade, but still a blade. I did have a combo set of 765/565s with steel shafts, but sold them when I wanted to try graphite shafts (should have just reshafted them), very forgiving. I have on order a 585 5 iron and 785 6 and 7 iron, and plan on pairing them with my 945 8-PW until the grooves wear out. I will probably eventually get the Z forged blades to replace them in the short irons.

I wish I could have found a good set of 745s to do a combo.

If you look at the Srixon staff players, it is amazing how many stuck with the 745 or 945s. I don' t think any of them went with the 65 series. But there are some moving to the 85 series. Shane Lowry has put a combo set of 585/785 in the bag this year.
