2019 TP5x vs. 2019 PROV1x...

Recommended Posts

Seems like it is the golfers from Oz that are the current testers.

Played previous version of tp5

Got a sleeve of new tp5 and tp5 x.

Play off 11 and had 38 on front 9 Saturday with tp5 felt was a little longer with all clubs.

Two shots that i hit a little skinny really surprised with the way they still held on green.

One definite improvement was the scuff resistance previous model i normally put new one in play each round.Ball looked great at end of 188 can play it again.

Feel was soft and spin on short shots great

So far all gains on previous model no down side.

tp5 x review to follow

On cue, yes i'm down in Oz and tested both

To be honest, I couldn't tell much difference between the ProVX new gen and old... The ball held up really well, barely any scuffing after 18, so that is a definite improvement.

The TP5x has better short game spin with the new version (as i posted in another thread).

Side by side comparison:

- Driver, both performed similar to previous model, TP5x longer and higher for me, i find the TP5x has less spin overall

- Long irons, very similar balls

- mid irons, from 6 iron down is where you notice the ProVX spins a little more

- Short game - ProVX has more spin, although the TP5x has definitely improved

- Putting - i found the TP5x to feel a little softer off the putter

Both held up well and dont scuff easily, both are slight improvements to prior gen.

The extra greenside spin with the TP5x will see me continue to use it for the time being, it's a better all round ball than last gen.

I’ve heard rumor that the new TP5X is crazy long.

I’d love to see someone like sheils do that test all with the same driver.

I did some short game testing today. TP5X is noticeably clicker and doesn’t spin nearly as much around the greens. Going to try and get both on the course soon.

What ball will you be comparing it to?

I normally play the 1x and CSX.

I’ve been playing the V1x for a few years now and never really liked the feel of the last tp5x so really didn’t give it much of a go last year.

I picked up a dozen tp5x to try out and while they feel (to me) much better then the previous model what everyone says is correct, they just don’t spin around the greens like the V1x. I had a 30y pitch shot to a flag that was perched just above a rise in the green, hit the tp5x and even though I clipped it really well it still hopped forward about 8 feet after it landed, three down a V1x hit the same shot and it stopped 2 feet after landing.

I’ll be sticking with the V1x.

  • 2 months later...

I've played the TP5x for the last few months indoors on the sims and can confirm that it is longer for sure. Feel is MUCH improved over prior version and sound off the driver doesn't remind me of hitting ball bearings anymore. Was happy enough to replace the Tour Bx I've been playing for a few years now once the snow melted off here in Denver. Here's the bad for me. I went through half a dozen balls in a round because they scuffed so horribly on regular shots. This may be due in part to fresh grooves on my new Z785 irons and the use of black Vokey SM7's. One wedged shot and the Taylormade logo was almost scuffed completely off. It's truly disappointing because I absolutely love the way the ball performs, but $25 extra per round on balls is a huge turnoff. Hopefully i just got a bad batch, I'll give the remaining six a try and see what that yields.

I see the comparison for the TP5X to the ProV1X. I made the change to the TP5X from the ProV1. It is definitely longer for me, and seems to spin better around the greens as well. While I found the TP5X to be a little firmer feeling than the TP5 (as expected), I found it felt a little softer to me than the Prov1X. I have no issue with iron spin, so really didn't see any negatives with iron spin on full irons or shot shots...

Anyone else switch the the TP5x from the ProV1?

Joking aside from the last few posts, I have actually had some experience with these two lately playing side by side.

The ProV1x (19) is a higher spinning ball throughout the bag than the TP5X. It is actually where the two manufacturers diverge; the TP5X is the higher launching/higher compression ball that is LOWER spin than the standard TP5, while the ProV1x is the higher launching/higher compression ball that is HIGHER spin than the standard ProV1.

This has confused people lately, but really it comes down to what you need. If you want more trajectory and like the firm feel/ball speed boost, then one of these could be great, but they similarities end there. You must decide what spin profile benefits you in the middle of your bag; this is where the differences lie. ProV1x will spin a ton on mid irons, TP5X will spin much much less. Both balls perform/spin well around the green, but there is an absolute edge to the ProV1x as far as stop and pop. Both are fairly low spin in the long game, but the TP5x spins less off driver IMO.

This input comes from both extensive personal testing and watching a lot of youtube reviews.

Agreed... it makes for some confusion, and yes, all manufacturers have the firmer ball designated as X.

I know with 100% certainty the Bridgestone Tour BX and the TM TP5X are the lower spin offerings, but I actually thought the Chrome Soft X was spinnier (especially in the middle of the bag) than the standard Chrome Soft.

Can anyone corroborate this?
