Anyone Hit Tommy Armour Atomic Irons Yet?

Passing through Dick's Sporting Goods at our local mall last week and saw the sales associate unboxing the new TA Atomic irons to put on display. I'm not in the market for new irons, but for giggles might go to Golf Galaxy this weekend and hit them if they have them. Looks like good tech in these clubs, let alone better looking. Anyone hit these recently?

My curiosity, after flight and distance, is how they feel. The hosel has forged stamped on them, but the only thing forged on the head is the titanium face, which is framed in stainless. I'm not a "feel" guy (I play cast shovels). Might be a dissapointment for those who play traditional forgings, though.

19* 4 iron? 41* pitching wedge??? No opinions on the irons, they are definitely not my cup of tea... but I'm sure some will find them very beneficial. But man, that's some seriously strong lofted irons. Have fun gaping those wedges.

The lofts are in line with the Rogue X irons, but with a higher swing weight. To me they felt better than the Rogue X. Similar ball flight characteristics, with really high ball flight relative to the lofts and stamped number on the irons, and some really low spin numbers.

Overall they seem like solid irons for that "max distance" segment, but the pricing leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when you can pick up the Rogue X irons for about $200 less now. I am not sure how many people looking for irons in that segment are worried about feel.

I hit the Max 7i at Galaxy about a month ago. I came away impressed. If you are an SGI guy like myself (playing g700’s now and Cleveland Altitudes before that) I think you’ll like the Atomic Max. They reminded me of the Cleveland HB but in a smaller package. Feel was pretty cool.

  • 1 year later...

I'm about a 14 handicap, so not a club champ but not quite a "distance-only" novice either. I just traded a set of Ping G30's I was no longer using in a swap for the Atomics. Played my first round yesterday and I'm going to bump my Gmax irons out of the bag for a while. Well struck, the atomic irons scream. The first hole I played was a 160 yard par three that I usually hit a smooth 7 iron into, but having read about the lofts I went with an 8 and flew dead straight over the flag by about 10 yards. Yikes! I'm going to see if I can get used to them, and if there is simply too much distance between clubs. And with the attack wedge going about 120 without a full swing I'm going to need to fill my bag with some other wedges. I also noticed that I'm hitting the wedges a touch left of my target. Not sure of why. I'll see if it's operator-error or if they need to be replaced after some tinkering. If this works out, I'm going to be thrilled and it'll be hard to get these clubs out of my bag. Trust me, if your playing partners tease you because you have TAs in your bag instead of the big brands, they'll shut up quickly after you hit. They feel great, perform solidly, will add confidence with distance, and it's just a matter of getting dialed in.

  • 4 weeks later...

I bought these online, used from Global Golf out of curiosity since I read on MGS most wanted test that these are the best in distance from their Game Improvement Irons test. I got them two weeks ago. Looks like a GI iron for sure not too bad. I have a Sky Trak at home and at the moment I was gaming JPX 900 Forged irons. I compared them side by side and the Atomic's as expected, were longer by 10 yards. But what is cool is that the total height is the same with each club. The spin is not too bad. I have yet to try them in real life but will do soon.

The feel off the face is nice as well. I have been gaming GI irons since the very beginning. When I got to try the forged 900, I told myself I will never go back to non forged irons. The Atomic were surprisingly good off the face. They kinda remind me of the p790? Also, they are unbelievably forgiving. I get punished with the mishits from the 900 and these Atomic irons, just wants to go straight and they rarely lose distance from not so good hits. They are just easy to hit!

Now, I actually processed a return request for these just in case and to my surprise, since I got them off ebay, ebay refunded me my money and is telling me to keep the irons. I rarely send back stuff and this is the first time this happened to me. With that said, I am really wanting to keep them now.

My only problem with these is the 100 yards and in distances. I need to dial the AW if I want to make these work for me.

Overall, these are great irons imo. The quality is not too bad too.

Ive been playing Atomics for the past year and I kind of have a love hate relationship with them. They do perform very well and are forgiving but they are very hot irons and are very low spin. I often find myself hitting a shot that is right on the flag but goes about 10-20 yards too far. Even when I get the distance right, it seems like the ball has no spin and just rolls off the back of the green.

I havent tried the yet with a high-end, tour ball that spins more, only with Wilson Duos and Maxfli Softfli. What I basically have to do is just my distance based upon the front edge of the green and either just let the ball roll out 10 feet or try to land it just short of the green and let it roll up.

Yeah, like I said, its a love/hate kind of thing. I love the distance of them and how forgiving they are but its also frustrating to waste strokes when you cant get the ball to stop on the green. Im still kind of on the fence whether I like them or not because I struggle with control with them.

Its kind of like its a tradeoff: you gain distance but you lose control. I have noticed that on the newer 845 irons that they made the lofts a little weaker, so maybe DSG realized this and weakened the lofts to increase the spin and stopping ability.

I played them a while ago. So far I did not have any issues stopping them. I used TP5X and DT Trusoft to see if there will be any difference. The problem that I experienced was the carry distance. Sometimes I hit them hot and they fly over my intended distance. I usually aim for the middle of the pin and I have some that were over by 10 yards and that was with the allowance that I was expecting. The forgiveness is amazing, on mishits, I was expecting to lose distance or direction but they still managed to save me the ball speed and did not veer offline that much. It just my first round with them but so far so good. Still lots to adjust and learn with these.
