OLD school at the range.....Ever seen these?

Recommended Posts

So tonight, for fun, I took out the first set of clubs I ever played with to the range. OLD clubs...they were originally my fathers, but they were what I learned to play on back in the 80's.....How many of you have EVER seen these clubs? LOL.

Yep, look just like my dad's old set. I think he still has some all rusted up and sitting in his backyard shed. Now, they are all rusted up and collecting many, many cobwebs. Literally, it's a spider haven in that damn thing.

I had this exact set back in 1971 or so. They were very pretty and I used them until I got my first set of Ping Eye2’s in the early 80’s. I’ve been checking eBay for them but the decent ones I’ve seen were overpriced.

My modern clubs do a great job of helping me get the most out of my swing, but they don’t come close to the looks of the classics.

@physasst I had that same wood as a youngster. My grandfather had cut it down so I could swing it when I was like 3 or 4 years old. Loved that thing as a kid and wish I still had it!

Plastic?? Uhh, no bro. Probably not persimmon either. Most likely laminated maple.

Balata balls were the jam. Persimmon nailing balata probably feels better than any current driver ball combo. I just caught the tail end. My first driver was a ladies persimmon as I was a kid and that was what a kid got...Taylor mades Pittsburgh persimmon had just come out and my next driver was a taylormade foam weighted or the judge.....the judge was straight nasty....in my Mind anyway. Founders club OG driver right there. So I just skirted playing persimmon with any kind of real game.

Those were the days when everyone I knew (including adults) bought the woods and irons together as a set (1-3-5, 3-PW) and added a SW and putter. The good players still played really good and they didn't know lofts, lie angles, grinds, bounce, etc.

my first set had resin woods. they are totally thing so you might want to lose the condescending attitude.

i don't know for sure that the ones above are resin but they have no hosel whipping and extreme sole wear with no wood showing through the paint so it's quite possible.

i was young and not nearly proficient enough at golf at the time to judge if they performed or felt worse than wood but the fact that they are so much easier and cheaper to produce than a wooden clubs but didn't take off speaks volumes.

The Golden Bears were a really nice looking set of clubs. I wanted a set back in 1975, but the sporting goods store only had RH. No mega stores or internet back then. Clubs were $99, for 11. Ended up buying a set of Wilsons, for $10 more, in left hand. I recall, the irons were marked, $79.99, and the three woods, $49.99. I walked out of the store, for a little over $140, with the clubs, a $20 bag, a dozen cheap balls, and tax. A major investment back then.

Now, a fairway wood on sale costs more.

I got a used set of those for my 13th birthday. 1975. I played the five wood for a least a couple of years after college.

I started with Northwestern Clubs before _'upgrading'_ to Ram Dave Hill Spade Blades. They were the go-to brand for weekend hackers back in the 70's.

Northwestern free hand me downs were my first irons. Then I paid $20 to a buddy for a set of dunlop cavity backs. Thought I had got the greatest irons ever. When I got out of college i bought a full set of ping eye2 with the woods. Wish I would of kept them. I remember being able to bomb the 3 wood on the rare occasion I hit the sweet spot.
