Thinking of DIY clubbuilding, where to start?

Handing my clubs over to anyone other than the person I bought them from gives me the willies.

Don't ask me why, but they are my babies! Lol

So, with that, I think I'd rather do my own loft/lie readings, bending at first.

I have done grips before and I'm pretty good with my hands.

What is some decent equipment to do your own bending , loft/lie measurements? And what area of club building did you guys move on to after that?

But what if there is new technology out just today!? Old threads won't have the latest.

And TBH the search feature leaves a lot to be desired. Way to use google though! +1 for google

I started with grips first, then shafts (prepping, epoxying, changing, tipping, shortening, extending, weighting), then started into "specialty" stuff (refinishing/polishing/paintfills/stamping, light grinding). I still leave some stuff to shops with more equipment ( loft/lie/bending, flo/spine, bead blasting, welding) because I just couldn't justify the cost of the equipment for the tiny volume that I'd be doing.

gentles gave you the best answer you could possibly receive. There is nothing that is missing from the numerous threads already in existence.

Start there and then one you want to know how to perform a triple bypass using the latest remote robot technology then by all means ask that specific question, else, read, learn, apply, rinse, repeat and most importantly enjoy. Good luck on your voyage of discovery, it will undoubtedly be worth it by whatever value metric you apply.

I have been putting together a Youtube channel recently with among other things a series based on a club making class I used to teach. If you search Mobile Clubmaker on Youtube, there are videos covering basic club assembly. I did the videos in this order, which is how I would teach someone new to it; regripping, then shortening shafts (ie learning to cut and measure shafts), then lengthening shafts (ie using epoxy), then full assembly based on what you did in the previous tasks. I have not done a ferrel video yet, hopefully tomorrow I will finish that one.

Bending clubs I put into a slightly different category as that is more about getting a feel for applying pressure, knowing when something is going to bend and knowing when it's getting close to breaking.

Thank you Adam, I will look at them! Are you a Mitchell kind of guy?

I like some of the Mitchell stuff. Don't have any in my shop though. Mainly GolfWorks, Club Mechanics, some older Golfsmith stuff, and a loft lie spec gauge from Golf Instruments that I really like.

If you are wanting to get started, loft/lie bending is kind of jumping straight into the deep end. I do about everything else (grips, re-shafts, bead blast/refinish, swingweight, grinding wedges), but the cost of a decent loft/lie bending machine has kept me away from that. I'd love to have one, and keep my out on Craig's List and eBay for a quality unit to pop up at a decent price, but haven't found one as of yet that I can justify the cost for what I'll use it for. When our local Golfsmith went under a few years ago they auctioned off all the club repair tools and I lost out on a really good loft/lie machine by $50 - still kicking myself over that one!

Nice, there was a guy around here with this really nice blue loft lie machine, I think it is silver and blue. That thing looked great. I am looking around for equipment.

I watched a tour fitter bend a putter at the open, he did that putter bend so fast! (On YouTube)

Nice, yeah those missed bids are hard to live with. But the dude could have kept outbidding you after you matched his. Yeah I look too, hard to trust someone's used unit, but they are probably calibrated right. I like the grips, the shafts , not into bead blasting or grinding I don't think , bending does not seem like it would be all that difficult but of course I am probrably Wrong. I may go take a course somewhere.

Anything technical has a learning curve .

A place around me has a digital mitchel loft lie machine , drool drool!

It was kind of a "silent" auction, so you put in your top bid and see how it ended up (Worst part is I know the guy who won it!). Now kind of wishing I'd been more like this guy:

I don't really want a spining/flowing tool, but will keep on the lookout on Craig's List for a club maker who retires/dies and the family is getting rid of his tools on the cheap

I've always had a special place for Dwight, being a fellow beet farmer. Plus I've got a special thing for Angela, she reminds me of my wife so much in the fact that she's skinny and shrewish, and we basically entered into a "contract" to procreate.
