Portland golf?

Recommended Posts

What are you looking for in a course? We don’t have anything that is top 100 but we have a lot of fun different courses. Pumpkin Ridge gets a lot of love but i’m Not much of a fan. Heron Lakes Great Blue can be a good test but gets a LOT of play. OGA is a fun track and is generally the best priced course in the area. Stone Creek is a very fun course but is 10 fun holes, 4 ok holes and 4 garbage holes. Langdon is really fun also, send me a PM if you want to get out there.

If you have time to travel and want a very NW course, make the drive down to Tok-a-Tee. It looks like you have a reciprocal through your home course, make a 2 day trip and go play Tok-a-Tee and try and get on Eugene Country Club the next day. Two courses that are basically all NW golf has to offer and I believe Eugene has been around since the 1890’s.

I played a few rounds in Portland last week and really enjoyed myself. I got out to Pumpkin Ridge (Ghost Creek), Columbia Edgewater and Langdon Farms. Each course was in great shape and (more importantly) every round was under four hours! Columbia Edgewater was the biggest surprise. It's a very welcoming club with a great atmosphere. While tight off the tee it has a few wild greens to keep you guessing. I'd definitely like to play it again.

Ghost Creek has some cool history. The clubhouse is full of pictures from the US Am when Tiger won it there. They had the greens really cranked during my visit. Langdon has several good holes on the front nine but the back is a bit blah.

I could be mis-remembering, but I am pretty sure the US AM was played on the private side Witch Hollow., at least the final round was.

You're right. I meant to say Pumpkin Ridge. In any event, it hasn't stopped the public side from plastering pics from the US Am around the clubhouse.

I know at least one round was played on Ghost, as I was in a fundraiser there one year, and one of the "teebox" incentives was for a $15 donation, you could skip hitting the drive, walk up and drop your ball at the spot that Tiger's drive ended up for your second.

**Everyone** took them up on that offer...

Played 3 rounds.. OGA and Langdon yesterday, and Pumpkin Ridge (ghost) today. I know its pricey but i thought Pumpkin Ridge was excellent, stnading out above the other two. The layout was beautiful, the course was in great shape, and there was nobody around. Tough course - i felt like every hole until like the 15th played pretty long - par 4s around 400 yds, par 3s all 170-215 and par 5s all in the 500+ range but nothing felt overly punishing or forced in. Felt like a big boy golf course compared to the other two. I actually thought this was as good of an experience to playing Waverly or Portland. Greens were in great shape too. Felt like a walk in nature.

I actually liked OGA and Langdon as well - we played OGA in the morning and Langdon in the afternoon, so it was a little tougher in the afternoon round with fatigue setting in a bit. I thought the front 9 at OGA was fun and a couple really tough ones, with a couple weak holes to start the back through the neighborhood but it finished with a few good ones. The greens were rolling really fast and true, which I really liked and the round was pretty quick even though the course was full. All in all, pretty challenging and fun. Organized crew of people working there, starter super friendly.

I thought there were some really great holes at Langdon and a couple I didn't care for. The course was in great shape, greens nice but a little slower than OGA. As a first timer out here, I thought the long grass was a little punishing. Couple holes we thought we hit great drives and they ended up lost as that thick knee high grass surrounds almost every fairway on the course. I think if you know how to play each hole, this isn't as much of a problem, but there were a few where hitting a straight driver off the tee got you into some trouble without knowing it. Only real complaint is the round was really slow. Granted it was Saturday afternoon and the whole place was packed (restaurant, someone was having a wedding, and the golf course was jammed), but the round took almost 5 hours and we were only a threesome.. we waited a couple minutes on EVERY shot. Really tough when its your second 18 of the day and sitting in the heat.. Would love to give it another go.

Great tracks, thanks all for your recommendations. I'll be back in the couple months to try some more.

parmo - if it's any consolation, the regulars at Langdon lose a lot of balls in that long grass, too. We tell ourselves that the bowl-shaped fairways on some of the holes makes up for it.

We would all dearly love to see the pampas grass bushes removed, though...
