Anyone else using a really short putter?

Recommended Posts

I recently switched...
Putting is not my strong suit. I average around 2.1 putts per GIR and 35 putts per round. I'm desperate to get better and I've been spending LOTS of time on the practice putting green. I recently started choking up quite a bit on my putter and noticed a huge improvement, so I decided to shorten my backup putter down to a ridiculously short 28 inches (I'm six foot one). I tried it out on the putting green yesterday and needless to say, it felt very silly but I was making everything inside six feet.
Has anyone else tried putting with a super short putter? I'm sure people are going to look at me funny while I use what looks like my 3 year old daughter's putter, but I'm desperate enough to give it a shot. Ha ha.

My "gamer" is still 33", but I'm thinking of taking the plunge and cutting it down to 29. We'll see if I still like using the ultra short putter after I game it for a while. Yeah, I was sort of inspired by Garrigus to try out the really short putter. It looks like Phil and Lucas Glover also use pretty short putters.

I think a lot of people would be better served using a putter shorter than 35 inches. That's just my opinion.

Some of the best golfers (putters) I know use REALLY short putters. I switched to a 34" (6' tall) and wouldn't mind trying shorter, cause I think it really helps. Funny thing...a few weeks ago I was playin in an adult/child two man (alternate shot) with my 9 yr old son. On hole 5 I didn't take my putter to the green cause I thought I wouldn't need it...well it turns out I did need a putter so being the lazy man I am I just used my sons... Banged in about an 8 footer that he left me after missing a very short, fast putt himself. My 9 yr old says "dad, that was the first putt you made all day, maybe you should just use my putter all the time" I laughed...then thought...hell why not try it. Plus in my mind I wanted him to know that his equipment was worthy of dad playing it also. So the rest of the day I putted LIGHTS out with his tiny little putter. Some of the other guys in the group at first thought it was funny (so did I)... but it didn't take long to realize it wasn't much of a joke anymore, as I was putting really well with it. I think go with whatever gets it in the hole... Some people need really short, some people need belly and bigger... try em all...

I don't know if mine is considered "ridiculously short", but I believe it's 29.5".

I am far from being the worlds best putter, but I do believe that a shorter putter allows you to make a shoulder turn through the ball while keeping the putter more on line.

More conjecture on my part: if you put straight back straight through, a shorter putter may be beneficial. A longer putter means you need to be more upright, thus possibly more like a swinging door stroke.

I use a 30.5 inch putter and I am 5'11" with a 34.5 sleeve. When I started working hard on my putting again, I looked at how good putters tend to setup and got some information second from Mike Shannon about posture, etc. When I got into a comfortable setup, I found my gamer putter was too long. Then I remembered I used to putt lights out with a shorter putter in High School. That putter turned out to be a perfect fit. So I cut my Rife down to match it and have been putting better ever since.

We had a 9 man skins game on a mini golf course in Myrtle Beach. Everyone had to use the course supplied putters and balls. Since we were the only folks there, we all played the same hole at the same time with stymies in play! (great fun!)

As a joke, I grabbed a kid sized pink putter. Don't know exactly how short it was, but it was the shortest one on the counter!

I won 7 skins, with 6 aces! KA-CHING!

I was tempted to buy the bubble gum colored stick from the course and play it for the next few days of real Myrtle golf.

Between that skins game and this thread, you boys got me thinking....:beruo:

I'm 5'7" and found a 32" Odyssey in the used bin and it really improved my putting. I putt even better when I choke down another couple of inches but it really screws with the weighting of the thing. I'd like to go shorter. Maybe to 30" or even 29". What's the best way of going about this? I feel if I try to cut it down myself I will mess it up. Do I take it to the shop and tell them to cut it down and get the swing weight back to where it is? Also, can you order a new putter from one of the OEMs and have them built to those lengths? Just wondering how you short putter bros pulled it off. Thanks.

I know this is an old thread, but didn't want to recreate a new one on the same topic.

Does anyone use a REALLY short putter, like 31" or less? I have found that I have adapted to the length of the putter rather than getting myself into my preferred posture and getting a putter that fits.

I am definitely outside the average in terms of height and wrist to floor. My height is 5'5" on a good day, but my wrist to floor is like 30.5". The low wrist to floor is due to short legs, but average length arms for my height.

I measured where my hands are choked up to on a 33" putter and the top of my left hand is at 29" and my index finger on my right hand is on the shaft lol. I'm not even that hunched over, posture is more like Tiger's putting posture.

This change in posture is pretty new for me, because up until now, i have adapted my body to the length of the putter rather than the other way around, so i haven't used the new posture out on the course.

With indoor putting, yes, it works better.
