Show Me Your "1" Iron

That Scotch Blade is a very nice club. Very nice indeed.

Every time I find just a 1-iron I feel obligated to find the rest of the irons to complete the set. Of course I feel the same way about finding the 1-iron whenever I acquire a 2-Pw set too. The sign of a true sicko I guess. Haha!

There was a day a very long time ago when I wouldn't even consider purchasing a new set that didn't offer a matching 1-Iron.

I'd be in real trouble with that mindset today. Many sets begin with a 4-iron and don't offer anything with a lower number. If a kid were to ask me what happened to the 1, 2 and 3 , I don't know how I'd explain it to them. The practice of "loft creep" is so silly I still can't wrap my head around it even after all this time.

I used to like to mess with kids by telling them I hit, say, a 5 iron on a par 3, with my 5 iron being 40 years old, and then watch them hit a modern 6 into someone's backyard. Now I just respond by saying "I hit my 150 club" or something like that. It's a good way to get past the idea that like numbered irons from different eras go different distances. I cringe when I read here (fortunately not all that often) that someone intends to bend an old set to modern lofts. Just figure out how far they go as is and play accordingly.

"You think we play the same stuff you do?"

Smashdn, or anyone else, know what year that Scotch Blade 1 iron was made? I've got a set of those irons 2-10 exactly like it but I never could find for certain about what years PowerbBilt made them. I'm really interested in finding original loft and lie specs too. I bent mine to 19, 22, 25, 28, 31.5, 35, 39, 43, 48....but I'd like to find PowerBilt's original specifications. Thanks.

That Scotch Blade1 iron head must be sorta scary tiny!

This is my club but I didn't take the pictures. I loaned it out to my golf buddy to take a few whacks with it. He is a much better golfer than me and I have no business even attempting to hit this thing.

He told me it had a low, boring flight like a three wood. (He paint filled it while he had it too.)

There is a whole hive of bumble bees living in the grips of these clubs for me. Powerbilt Scotch Blades.

The 1 iron looks like 1980-82 Scotch Blade, though the stamps are different. Looking at Ironfinder, I didn't see anything that matched perfectly, but Ironfinder doesn't have everything from everyone. :)

Not sure on the specs or age. It was an estate sale find, citation woods (1,3,4,5), irons (1-10) and maybe a sand wedge. Plus there was an extra 4 wood in the bag and the nice Powerbilt navy cart bag.

I'm not a collector, just a player, and I cannot hit those irons and do not play the rest of the clubs. It is all for sale if anyone is interested. I used to have them in the BST forum. If you search you may find the old post.

Smashdn, I'm guessing your 1 iron is a mid-1980's to late 80's model. It is a different shape clubhead than one NJ' showed above. I'd like to find original specs, but it seems PowerBilt did a lot of different custom grinds on these irons so it is probably best to adjust loft and lies to player and not original standards. The lofts and lies I set my set seem to have enough bounce for me and they work just fine with the settings. My irons all have number 5 stamped on back which probably reflects grind used on them.

  • 1 month later...

Here is my only 1 iron, just got it for $1.18 at Goodwill, a Tour Legend II (??)

Like many of you I typically don't buy irons unless I find a set, at least 5 thru 9, but I've never had a 1 iron, I'm currently gaming cavity backs, and this looked forgiving to experiment with (no idea about the make history though) -- I know it's not the typical forged blade or muscleback drooled over here but I now have a 1 iron to play around with, hehe --

I thought of having seen this thread when I saw this single iron and had to grab it... I think it looks better in person, I had a hard time with the camera

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought this recently, not an actual 1 iron but it has less loft than my 2 irons so I thought I'd post it anyway!

Date wise I think it's from the 1960s, a bit of a retro-vibe going on with the naming rather than numbering, the other 4 irons are also named, mid-iron, mashie, mashie niblick and niblick.
