Interlock vs Vardon

drbonesvt

Recommended Posts

I started playing at about 12 years old. Totally self taught. Bought Hogans "5 Fundamentals" and copied the grip and every thing else I could. I am now 75 years old and my grip is the same today as then.

Palmer's grip also affected me.

I look at grips of my playing companions and can't imagine how they ever hit a decent shot.

I teach and yes have tried this. Its a general rule that isnt 100% but you get the idea. Weakening the grip slightly and playing a 3 finger cut will all but remove any draw as well. If youve been doing it for along time quality of strike will suffer for sure at first but you will see quick results. When your left hand becomes more dominant its easier to deliver a slightly open face and hold it through.Try it on the range, it will feel different so try it with short irons and work your way up

I have the exact opposite too. I use interlock and always found a fade easy ... but I draw the ball easily too. With the one exception. To draw it I make sure to increase grip pressure on my right hand. specifically my thumb and Pointer finger. I’m very left hand dominant though. As in near lefty playing righty. On film my right hand comes nearly off the club for a fade , similar to Vijay or Phil.

Overlap I feel like my right hand isn’t even on the club. Hate it.

have you tried 10 finger? It's pretty easy to get used to right away, for me at least.

I tried it once for chipping and thought it worked pretty well. Never on a full swing. It's worth a shot though.

I'm playing 18 this afternoon and again tomorrow, and I'm worried the knuckle is going to be in some pain with that many full swings, so I may give it a try today if it really starts bothering me.

Did you ever find a solution with overlock. I've played interlock my whole life and this year started experiencing pain in my right ring finger  like you're describing.

I have a huge knot/callous where my right ring finger rubs (about an inch above the fingernail on the side of the finger not the top) against my left index finger large knuckle with my interlocking grip. It gets smaller and less painful as I change to Vardon but I lose control when I use the Vardon grip. I also can hit fades all day long with an interlocking grip but CANNOT hit a fade to save my life with the Vardon grip. Only draws with the Vardon but can go both ways with the Interlocking. For some reason its super easy to hold off the club rotation with interlocking but Vardon just produces closure of the face for me - so draws all day long with it.

Matter of fact, when I use Vardon, I find my swing path going more in-to-out the longer I use it (even to an extreme) so I have to go back to an interlocking grip just to try to neutralize my path to stop the hooks which eventually creep in when my path gets so in-to-out.

Yes, but only by going to Vardon/overlap. I had used the interlock my whole life, and, when I first started experimenting with the overlap because of the pain in my ring and pinkie fingers, I thought I'd never be able to make the switch. I started by just using the new grip on a few shots per round and then increasing the number each subsequent time I went out. All of a sudden it just kind of clicked; now it feels totally natural, and the pain went away very quickly once I made the switch.

Switched to Vardon this year after interlocking for 25+ years. For me... takes the right hand out of play, holding lag a bit longer.  Easier to set the club with Vardon.... took a couple range sessions to get the feel.  Wouldn't go back.... not yet anyway. 🙂

I use interlock, but have wanted to use vardon; i can never feel confident in my grip though when using vardon. It feels loose and I think the club is going to fly out of my hands which results in so many weird things. I just dont know if my hands are extremely weak or what the deal is.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

My dad taught me interlock but I've been Vardon for the last 20+ years.

Here's the question I asked myself about the interlocking grip right before I switched:

"What does taking my left index finger off the grip accomplish for me?"

The answer was absolutely nothing and I've never gone back.

FWIW, the change took me about two weeks.

Easy peasy.

I’ve been switching back and forth and can’t decide what I like better! It’s marginally easier to hit long clubs for me interlocking and marginally easy to hit short clubs overlapping. Really I don’t think it matters very much though. I tried interlock, overlap, baseball, reverse overlap and double overlap within a few rounds as an experiment and shot about the same with every grip. Double overlap was kinda ugly feeling though, could only really hit knockdowns everywhere.

I interlocked for the first 46-years I played this game. A hand injury prevented me from interlocking. To reduce the pain in my “pinky” finger, I started using the overlapping grip. I have been using the Vardon grip for 7 golf seasons. The interlocking grip feels foreign to me. I hope I can play another 46-years with the Vardon grip.

Two differences between interlock and overlap - whether it matters and how depends on how you swing the club.

1) Overlap reduces the wrist c0ck angle in the trail hand - or put another way - it enables you to have a more acute angle between trail hand and club.

2 It also puts the club more in the fingers of the trail hand.

Jim Furyk uses a double overlap because his runs out of motion range in the trail hand with a single overlap.

Obviously all three have produced world class golf.

Reviving this thread. I started golf as a boy with a set of Chi Chi Rodriguez kids clubs that my brother and I split. Both my grandfather and dad taught me the interlock grip. As I got older I switched to a reverse overlap. The Vardon grip with the overlap finger switched. So my “pointer finger” overlaps my pinky. I have small hands and this takes the tension out of the interlock and I get more grip with both hands.

Does anyone else use a reverse overlap?

Ten finger grip.

I used interlock when I played as a kid. Took 17 years off. When i came back in my 30s, found that i kept instinctively going to a ten finger grip. It felt much more natural. Been nearly three years and can’t imagine I’ll go back.

As for overlap, it has always felt alien to me.

So baseball grip?

ive always played ten finger grip ( baseball ) but taking some lessons and the teacher is hoping i change to a vardon or interlocking.. but they feel so loose ? like the clubs gunna fly out of my hands, its the fall / winter season so i can put in some hours with the new grip to make it feel good...

but my question is.. am i gunna get an advantage by changing my grip from baseball grip to one of the prominent grips ?
