Easiest to Hit or Favourite UDI Iron

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Having bounced back an forth between a 2Hybrid and GAPR Mid UDI what have been the easiest to hit UDI's that people hit , I know an 1# or 2# Iron are the to some the holy grail and for pure ball strikers only but let me hear whats worked and what hasnt for you

I sometimes find the Hybrids can be a bit of a hook machine for some and the GAPR i dunno just doesnt have any feel to me and invariably not a confidence inducing club off the tee

Cheers

Couldn't agree more here. My U45 is effortless to hit.

I haven't found that there are any driving irons that are significantly easier to hit than the MP18 Fli-hi you have in the long irons according to your signature. Just need to try a bunch out and find the one with the right sole width, head shape, leading edge design, etc. that works for you. Maybe just start with the Fli-hi if you like them? They get larger and more forgiving as you get into the 2 iron head.

That said, my favorite is the P790 UDI. Not the most forgiving out there but a lot more forgiving than my blade 3-iron, so it's a natural progression for me. All the DI's out there with wide soles and offset look off to me coming from blades in the rest of my set.

I'll second the GAPR. I gave it a whirl because at my home club there are 3 holes where I need to lay-up off the tee and you can't miss left off any tee there or you're O.B. or water or woods.

The problem I had with hybrids off the tee is if I catch one out on the toe a little it's hooking left and in trouble. So, I got the GAPR Lo and it goes dead straight even if well off the toe. And it's pretty solid off the deck.

The only problem I had with the GAPR is the stock shaft (KBS Tour graphite hybrid X-Stiff) was way too light for me. I switched to a Fujikura Atmos Black 9x HB shaft and that was entirely better, but the ball was flying a little too high for me. Then I adjusted the loft a little lower and I found the perfect combination.

The F9 speedback 4i is a pretty solid stick. Im trying one out right now. Its not Fowlers version with the AD shaft, I have a DG105x100. Prefer steel.

the past year and a half ive had the 790 udi, gapr lo, u85, and now 410 crossover all in 2 irons..... Out of the 4, the 410 crossover is my favorite by far. Long, forgiving, easy to launch, and workable flight. The 790 udi was the farthest and lowest launching which I loved, but also hardest to hit of the 4. Gapr Lo I absolutely hated and couldn't get rid of quick enough. The u85 started off nice for me but I grew to hate how chunky it looked at address

I'm playing the 716 TMB in 3 and 4 iron. I'm a fan of them and dont see room for improvement personally. Cheaper alternative is the 712U which was nice a little bigger though.

I played the original crossovers and liked them for the most part. They had a tendency to catch heavy grass though as they are large. They inspired me to get the TMBs.

Played around with the UDI never really got comfortable with them and had a quick turnaround.

The Mizzy Fli hi well I'm about to get burned here, but probably the worst for me. Great club for the folks they work for though so they have to be recommended.

Frankly I like all mine! Slight differences but all reliable options at that spot in the bag. I usually carry one at a time

P790 Udi - black tie 105x @ 17.5*

= longest, most fun, favourite tee but least off turf

Tp Udi - black tie 105x @ 20*

= most versatile, great off tee and turf

J15df - Nippon spb x (2i) @ 20*

= honestly neck and neck with Udi 3. A sleeper 3-iron setup that will go down as one of my best builds. Really reliable club

Tp MC - Nippon spb x (2i) @ 21.5*

= least used, plenty long and forgiving but main purpose is a more true 3-iron yardage. Only one that sees use on par 3s too.

I've had great results with the Srixon Z U85 2 (18*) driving iron with the factory 'tour issue' Miyazaki Mahana shaft. I also have the 3 (21*) in the bag, and they have just been so easy to hit and accurate enough too. I picked this after spending a couple of hours on Trackman with Mizuno MP18, TM 790 UDI, and various GAPR irons. I have to say that the Z U85 also produced the nicest feel among the lot.

Srixon Z785 w/ PX 6.0 HZRDUS yellow (S) shaft
Srizon F65 3w (15*) w/ stock Miyazaki Kaula (S)
Srixon Z U85 20* driving iron

So I have played the UDI TP and P790, and have not hit the Mizuno you have but the ping crossover is the perfect driving iron. Great launch and looks. Pair it with the right shaft and I don’t think it can be beat in terms of forgiveness and looks. That said off the tee the P790 was ridiculous so it depends on what you want to use it for. I would just try a couple of them as the feel and launch were different enough for me that it makes the difference obvious. I ended up going to the 3 crossover as I just didn’t need 250 yards from an iron too often and I’m playing it as a progression from my i210 4 iron and a driving iron combination.

I tried out the Cobra King Utility, the 790 UDI, GAPR LO, U85, and the G410. Ended up loving the GAPR LO once I switched to the KBS proto shaft since the stock KBS hybrid shaft was too light and produced serious spin. Wish I could've tested out the 410 with a different shaft because that was the hottest face IMO, but I thought it looked chunky compared to the GAPR and found a good deal on a new one with the upgraded shaft so I pulled the trigger and have been happy. I didn't get along with the Cobra or the Srixon, and the 790 was great off the tee but I couldn't hit it off the turf at all.
