Garland Resort

One of the 'annual golf trip' groups I occasionally join is heading to Garland this year and I'm on the fence whether to go. I hear the courses are good but the resort sounds mediocre at best. I've become a bit of a snob in my older age and certainly appreciate a clean room and quality food. And if I'm going to use one of my few weekends away from the family I want to be sure it's worth it. Can anyone weigh in on the place?

My group went to Garland last year, and are looking forward to returning this year. Courses are fun and well kept. Food is good as is the lodging (though maybe a bit dated). The convenience can’t be beat with all 4 courses starting from the same pro shop-which is connected to the lodge. Only complaints we had were about phone service and WiFi.

We went 3 years ago and it was great if you plan on playing a lot of golf. We go to Boyne and Treetops more often, because I think the golf is better. But man was it nice to park your car and never have to see it again. Not that you drive a lot at Boyne or Treetops, but if you are playing 36+ holes in a day like we do, you will really appreciate not having to load and unload the car so many times. The courses at Garland are all good, but fairly similar after the fountains, I believe. Staff and food were as good as anywhere. Maybe a bit dated but I never thought it was dirty, maybe that has changed in 3 years. I really enjoyed parking my golf cart, eating lunch outside, then hopping back in the same cart to have another go. We plan to go back again sometime soon.

I agree, the golf is better at Boyne. I’ve only played Threetops, but I have heard the other courses at Treetops are great too. But as you pointed out, the ability to park your car for the weekend and all of the convenience of that were a huge plus for our group. From our travels so far, our group would like to have a resort with the courses from Boyne, the lodging and shuttle to town (Short’s) from Shanty Creek, the convenience and friendly staff of Garland and the Wee Links 18 hole par 3 course from Lakewood Shores.
