Shaft options similar to Modus 120

What are some iron shafts most similar in EI profile to the Modus 120? Let's leave out the R300 and S300. Thanks!

R300 and S300 are a flex designation, not a shaft designation. That aside, I don't know of any other shaft on the market like Modus 120.

The modus 120 and 130 are unique shafts within their particular market.

I have no knowledge of a shaft that can directly/parallel the 120.

I would say the new ping proprietary shaft made by Nippon awt 2.0 is similar in its feel and very similar step pattern design, but since the awt is acesnding weight and is more of a flighted shaft, that kinda eliminates any close performance resemblance.

120 is a great shaft if you can time/load it. I abhorred it for the longest, but once you get a feel for it and if it matches your swing then it'll be hard to find an equal.

There's nothing quite like its unique load characteristics. For me it's high launch with low spin.

The weight is way different but the bend profile of the steelfiber i95 Reg flex (.370, not cw) is very similar. The taper tip i95 R is a bit stiffer. So is the KBS Tour 90 Stiff for the majority of the shaft, just the very end of the tip is softer.

But not much that I know of in the same weight range. The modus 120's are uniquely soft in the butt/mid section for a shaft of that weight yet still remain firm in the very tip. Closest that I can think of might be the c-taper in reg or maybe the PX 5.5 (.355).

I thought they were unique, too. At least I until I received an apparently mis-informed response to this very question in another thread. Thanks everyone for setting things straight.

Like you said, the 120 took a little bit of getting used to. Not much though, maybe a couple of rounds. For me, the shaft really made a huge difference in the short irons.

So now I want to re-shaft my wedges. Doesn't necessarily have to be the 120 but I'd like something similar. Installing an 8-iron shaft seems like it could do the trick, since it will inherently be very tip-stiff. Any ideas?

The only shaft that resembles the modus 120 S or X, IMHO, is dynamic gold S300 or X100. Both great shafts. No hate for dynamic gold here.

That's to simple.

For wedges I'm always gonna endorse the dgs400 TI, simply for its sticker (jk). I think the weight and balance of the s400 coupled with the right head and specd swingweight is unparalleled.

If I had to do modus in the wedges, I'd probably do the modus 125 iron shafts. Although I'm curious about trying some 120s in the wedges.

Agree with most of what's been said here. Gonna move over to another thread to discuss options for my 50* and 56* wedges:

how does True Temper XP-115 compare to modus 120

For the same flex, the XP 115 stiff is quite a bit stiffer though most of the shaft than the 120 stiff and then get just a hair softer at the very tip. The XP 115 in Reg might be closer for most of the shaft but then would get softer at the tip.

anything similiar to 130 modus

The 130 is quite a bit stiffer than the 120, the two are night and day. The 130 stiff is closer to a DG x100 and even a bit stiffer.

Modus are simply great as well. Aim and fire.

Interesting, as I feel they are night and day differences.

I tested the 120 X and S pretty extensively, along with the other modus / Ns pro options. Against the X100 I had.

1) The X100 were much much heavier 130grams vs 115 & 116 / 105modus models as well

2) The Tip stiffness with the X100 was very different. Much harsher in the X100

3) The Bend profile on loading was very different, the X100 were very boardy no matter how fast or slow I swung. The Modus though felt I could swing much much smoother I didnt have to gas it to get it to go. It felt more in tempo for a medium tempo swinger (for me that is)

4) Vibration was a huge difference as well, The X100 felt great on good strikes as well as bad strikes, but you can still feel it. The modus, was extremely impressive it seemed the vibrations were well dissipated. While feedback could be something people want, personally I can tell by ball flight if a shot was good or bad, but if you are having a bad striking day, getting the buzz from an off centered strike through the round was exhausting and some times mentally debilitating.

I did finally settle on the 1150 GH Tours in stiff while slightly different and I mean slightly from the Modus 120's.......

The lines (Modus and 1150's) itself provided a tremendous amount almost 25ft of additional height.

The best part for me personally was how quickly the ball got up to the peak height and held, carried the right distance and then came back down with similar spin values as the X100

The X100 were just a low piercing shot, while great....nothing beats carry in my opinion. With that 130 grams swinging for 18 holes....started to take its toll on me.

So again.... Very happy with my choice, plus I saved almost $30 per shaft.........BONUS!

Honestly man, I have been kicking myself for not trying them sooner. I had been playing the DG X100's for the past 7 years. I went into my recent JPX 900 fitting expecting to just go with the tried and true X100's.

My trainer told me to hit the Modus 105 and tell him what I thought. After I got done hitting them, I immediately knew I was not going back to the X100's.

Personally for me, I had noticeably more club head control. They felt like butter.

  • 1 year later...

I purchased new mizuno irons with modus 120 stiff flex based on my fitting session - 120s are stock with custom length. Have play 4 rounds and hit 500 balls at the range. On the course they have been hit or miss. At the range, I am spraying them all over. Purchased a custom Mizuno 4 Hi Fli online with KBS Tour Stiff 120. Hit straight lasers straight out of the box on the course and at the range. Do I need to go X-Stiff in Modus 120s or am I hitting the wrong shaft? I heard stock shafts tend to have more flex than custom - stock stuff plays more like a regular flex. Curious to hear thoughts.
