Nashville courses in August

Staying at JW Marriott for my wife’s 40th BDay. Have about 6 couples going and the guys are looking to play golf one day. Seems like Gaylord and Hermitage are good. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Greystone is a great option as well if you don't mind driving a little farther. Greystone, Gaylord Springs, or President's Reserve are going to be the best public options and all have zoysia fairways and are kept in great shape. President's reserve has sheep on the course.

Is Hermitage walk-able? I'm going to be in Nashville in a couple of weeks for a conference and want to sneak at least one round in.

Yes, Hermitage is quite walkable. The course is relatively flat and generally the distance from green to tee is short.

Haven't played extensively in Nashville but have been down for a couple long weekends.

Greystone is one of my favorite courses and worth the drive.

Also enjoyed Harpeth Hills but played in late March and everything was still dormant. Will likely play again when conditions are better.

Haven’t played the first 2 on your list, but Hermitage over Temple Hills.

Can anyone speak to the condition of Presidents? I'll be in Nashville next week for 'work' and will try and get in 2 rounds. Debating on making the drive to Greystone and will book hotels based on where I end up golfing... ha.

Greystone held the Tennessee State Open June 4-6. I’d say it’s in decent shape. Burmuda has taken off. Golf is lush right now in TN.

I'll be the voice of dissension I guess regarding Greystone. I can't speak to the current conditions but I just did not care for the course itself as a whole. There were some very awkward green to tee drives as well as a few holes that were just clunky. I can see it as a fun course to play every now and again and there are some holes I really liked but overall I don't recommend it when people are asking about Nashville golf.

 

I liked numbers two, three and four. I think number five is not well done. It does traverse a difficult section going uphill but still not well done in my opinion. Six, seven and eight are forgettable holes. Nine is a little awkward as well. The area where ten, eleven tee box, seventeen green and eighteen tee box is squirrely. I hated number 12. I really liked 13, lots of options. Fourteen, fifteen, seventeen and eighteen are all forgettable.

 

It is a tough property. Lots of abrupt elevation changes and pretty compact. Also when I went a few years back the range was completely grown up.

 

For that same price range I am more apt to recommend people play Legacy or Twelve Stones. Keeps them closer to Nashville proper as well, especially if they are traveling in from the north side.

I'll agree 10 and 12 are awful. I enjoyed Montgomery Bell also. Anything outside an hour I'll pass on. 12 Stones looks nice, haven't played that one.

Twelve Stones is certainly not world class. It also suffers from a reputation of bad conditions in the past. It suffered heavily from the Nashville flood and never really recovered from a conditions standpoint. I want to say within the last year or two it is under new ownership. I follow them on facebook and it seems to me they are making the right moves to provide good conditions and overall a nice golf experience. The driving range was neglected and the new bunch have repaired and brought it back to life as well as the short game area that was completely overgrown. I've always liked their grill and restaurant but even it has changed hands and names pretty frequently here lately.

 

It is a residential course that has a few long green to tee drives and one or two awkward holes but overall the course does not feel cramped and way better flow than Greystone. Twelve Stones is about seven minutes off of I-65 too and not hard to get to at all.

 

Legacy is a Ray Floyd design that has very rolling greens. I feel like it has a lot of interesting holes and driver off the tee is not always the best play. Not in your face strategic really but it helps to play from certain places. Generally they keep the fairways pretty short, dry and bouncy. It is I suppose technically a municipal course as it is owned by the City of Springfield but they use a concessionairre to run the golf operations side of things.

I always liked playing General’s Retreat. Nice variety of holes. Kind of an old style country feel in my opinion. I wouldn’t hesitate to play it, but I cannot speak to current conditions. Maybe someone else on here can.

Hermitage, Greystone, Olde Fort, Indian Hills. The two latter options are in Murfreesboro, are great, fun, challenging, and well-maintained courses at half the price of Greystone or Hermitage.

Greystone should be your first choice if you're in Nashville. Really fun, pretty layout and it's always in really good shape. Bit of a drive to get out there though.

 

Hermitage is re-doing the greens on President's, changing them from bent to bermuda after the greens flat died on them last year. General's there is ok, but Hermitage tends to really overwater the course to keep it pretty for pictures and I've had balls out there plug in the fairway in the middle of July when it hadn't rained in a month. General's tends to drain a bit better, but still.

 

Another course you might want to consider is Franklin Bridge. Course itself is nothing special, but it's in pretty good shape right now and there are some really good deals to be had. $25 tee times including range balls, lunch, and a beer is hard to beat.

So may upgrade my clubcorp membership and if so, how is bluegrass yacht and temple hills? Currently had Gaylord Springs in my head to book for our two groups, but now wonder if either clubcorp course is better. Thanks.

Both Greystone and Hermitage President's have bent greens, which are going to be tired in August. Both are really nice layouts if you prefer that over green condition.

 

I really like Hermitage General's Retreat (bermuda greens).

I think Greystone is a more fun/varied golf course than either Gaylord or Hermitage, but it’s a good 45 minutes from downtown Nashville. Almost worth driving to Sweetens Cove or Sewanee at that point if you’re looking to see something interesting. But, if you’ve got plenty of time, it’s a fun track. Its Bent greens may be a little shellacked by August, but I played there in September a couple of years ago and don’t remember them being too bad.

 

Gaylord is a quintessential 1980s high-end public development built for resort play and corporate outings. Lots of mounds and water. They used to play a Champions Tour event here. I will say I played there about a month ago and the Bermuda greens were excellent - fast and smooth. It was also a more interesting layout than I remembered. I’d probably give it the edge over Hermitage General’s Retreat, particularly if General’s has Bent greens (I know Presidents does/did), which will be overwatered and beat up in August.

 

I haven’t played Bluegrass Yacht, but have heard good things and know it hosted the State Am years ago, which suggests it has a pretty good pedigree.

 

Temple Hills is okay, but I wouldn’t recommend it over Gaylord, Hermitage, Greystone, or Bluegrass.
