US Open Local Qualifier Scores

tgard227

Recommended Posts

I've always wondered about how some people enter into the US Open local qualifier in good conscious. I was checking out the local qualifying scores at some sites around me and there were multiple scores of 90 or worse including one score of 100. I think I checked about 5 qualifiers out of curiosity after looking at my local one and the one in St. Louis. I understand that we all have bad rounds or that life happens but some of these scored are just ouch bad. I just don't understand why someone would want to subject themselves to that kind of misery. Has anyone played in a local qualifying event and been paired with someone that you know/strongly suspected was fudging some scores to artificially keep their handicap low?

i shot 83 with a 45 front just last week. only to shoot 74 (0.6 differential) 2 days later.

blame a starting double and triple...and it's hard to work back from -- btw, PSA: DO NOT GET TO THE COURSE WITH ONLY 20 MINS TO WARMUP BEFORE YOUR US OPEN QUALIFIER ROUND. smh.

I made sectionals a few years ago (shot 68) despite playing with a guy that shot 106. Of course the pros stuck with me blowing out 75s at Sectionals probably weren't too happy either.

The USGA no longer sends letters. They say they do if you are 10 over the course rating. But they actually don't anymore. So there's no reason for these people not to lie to try it one fun time.

I've given up on the Open and Am. The Am is dominated by college kids moreso than ever. And the Open is so stressful due to the long rounds. 6 hours x 2 rounds = 12 hour day.

It’s hard to say. I’ve examined state am rounds and you constantly see 89-71 or 85-66 type things. I think I even saw a 98-74.

Sure. Some hacks will enter. But. Sometimes it’s just a guy who implodes while on display. Can happen to anyone.

I personally don’t get the big deal. Sure. I like to draft off a great player as much as anyone. But you’re deficient yourself if you blame your 77 on a guy shooting 85 plus. You do you and you’ll be fine. Those rounds aren’t fast paced anyway.

The good old mid-am qualifiers. I've had some doozy partners.

Walking in after 6. Picking up a 12" putt on 1 etc etc

Miserable day for qualifying at the Country Club of Scranton. 42 degrees with a steady rain for May 13th is brutal. Play was suspended around 12:30 ET and will resume at 9 am tomorrow. In 2017 the CC of S had the highest scoring average in country for local qualifying. With the absurdly soft conditions that will likely not be the case this year. Although, only 1 player was under par when play was suspended. 13 guys already WD and we had 3 no shows.

No, speed up or DQ. We sped up, he finished with a smooth 105 and I shot 77. Wish it would've gone better but thems the breaks. That was my first go round in USGA event so you get paired with who knows what. In the 5 events since there's been nothing like it, but every time you see someone post something 3 digits.

I've been that person before. Shot 86-68 in a state mid-am. Sure, not a USGA event, but still tournament golf. It happens sometimes, you just move past it.

You get some bad breaks that have scores go up quickly, you start pressing when you think you have to and those breaks compound, etc.

I have seen plenty of guys who are legit +2 to 3ish caps blow up when it comes to a pace that is much slower than they are used to. It's really not a big deal, they are the ones who have to live with the score, not me.

tournament golf is hard. Put me down for some really good provincial and national rounds ... and some awful ones as well. I don't have my 24 year old golf nerves any more

Got a phone call from the 2018 SEC Player of the Year's father berating the USGA about their handling of today's qualifying given the difficult course conditions. This is the stuff that drives me crazy. The qualifying system is not about being fair from the start. It's designed to simply meet a quota in order to keep the "Open" in the United States Open. Went on and on about how it was unfair to his son and his "advanced ability". What dad failed to explain why his son, who made it to the semifinals of the US Am last year, decided to quit after 9 holes while others had to the will and determination to finish until play was suspended. What a whiny loser...lol.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting since the weather is going to be similar to today.

Pretty much every legitimate tournament player has shot a round in the mid-80's at one time or another. The 94's and 101's are entirely different, though, bud. LOL
