Help me stop shanking

Whoa! I'm going to be complimentary and say that is one of the best video captures of a shank ever displayed in this forum!

No coach here, and can only speak to my experience. I addition to the above and any other advice that may resonate or work for you, do a little search here and you can find a nice little vid of Monte demonstrating something that can be helpful. For me, it creeps in with wedges sometimes and when it does I'm either not turning properly, not transitioning properly and/or holding off the face and not releasing the clubhead (which can be a consequence of 1 or 2 for me). His little drill, or little things I know to try for my issues get me back on track.

Hope you find something that works, because it's nice to be able to "fix" it when it happens. Although for me, if I shank one out playing a round and it comes from nowhere, I overreact and end up not shanking but with some kind of "safety pull" of short wedges for awhile - maybe I'm not really fixing it, lol, at least that day.

you are likely too close to the ball. the arms work out from the shoulder sockets. so you have to let your arms just hang naturally in front of you. take your posture and let your arms hang completely tension free and fall in front of you. then grab the club.

The bigger issue I see is your body is stalling. you have way too much late hand action in that shot. notice at impact how your shoulders and hips are completely square to the ball. NO! You have to get open my man. i want to see both sides of your backside from behind. check out tiger at impact and notice how open he is with his wedge compared to you. ROTATE ROTATE ROTATE. open up that body to the target fully and you shake the shanks. I should also note that tiger really crowds the ball. He stands much closer to the ball than most other tour players. Jon rahm is another one who does. I'm not opposed to seeing you that close to the ball, but you damn sure better get open and rotate more if you are going to crowd it like that. Or else you will shank it, like you are.

tiger wedge:

these wedge shots are simply controlled by the rotation the arms are passive. turn back, turn through. rotation controls the face. your swing reminds me so much of my own before i learned to let the pivot and NOT the arms control the club. this video will get you pointed in the right direction:

A little update, the shanks have quietened down a fair bit on full shots, I may get unlucky with one creeping in every round. But the shanks on chips are killing me, literally I'll have a 25 yard chip and I'll shank it right. I don't think I'm moving the path further away from me catching the hosel full on, it feels like I'm just leading with the hosel leaving it wide open. Any other advice on the short chips and pitches? They're even more frustrating than full shot shanks, chipping should be simple.

obligatory "not a pro and could be totally wrong"...:

few things i notice here.

1. hands are closer to ball at impact than address.

2. right shoulder is closer to ball at impact than address.

3. shoulders appear closed to toe line/target at address and more square at impact.

you could try standing further away from the ball like others have suggested, or perhaps you could try opening your shoulders a bit more at address. maybe try both together?

p.s. are you taking the p!ss? looks like you have a good enough swing to hit this shot on purpose.

Haha I wish I was taking the p*ss!

I think I was flaring my front foot out quite a bit on this shot, possibly making my shoulders look more closed than they are, maybe?

Yeah first thing is to try standing a bit further away from the ball, my arms hang towards my body where most pro's are outwards.

Also anyone think my butt line is back too far from my heels? Cheers

maybe. your hands appear closer to the ball at impact than address. if you set up to the ball with the ball in the sweet spot this will produce hosel rockets. the question is: what causes your hands to get closer to the ball at impact?

i don't have the software to do this, but perhaps you could draw an imaginary line through your toes to the target and compare it with an imaginary line drawn through your shoulder sockets to the target. in my opinion, at address, the imaginary line drawn through your shoulder sockets points more rightward than the line drawn through your toes. this could just be a red herring but i thought it was worth a mention.

I'm pretty sure it's your lower body. Bottom Line - you can make a better rotation through the ball. Your weight seems to go to the target, when you should feel like it's going as far left as possible.

Try this for chipping - setup for the chip, get 65-70% weight pressure on the left foot. Then do not move your weight at all. Especially on the back swing, do not let it start to move back to your trail foot. This should help you to stop shanking chips. As you get more comfortable, then start backing off the amount of pressure on your left side. Depending on the type of chip and flight you are looking for you can bounce around 50-75% weight pressure on the left foot.

Full Swings - Two Thoughts - get to my right heel on the back swing - get to my left heel from the top of the backswing into your finish. When you finish, you should really feel all the pressure / weight into that left heel. If it's on your ball or middle of your left foot, like I think it might be now, then you can rotate more into that heel position.

Good luck. Hope it helps.

Just in my non-professional opinion, I would agree that you are a little too close to the ball. But I would also say that you are not clearing enough on the downswing to get out of your way (on your full swing shots). You hips and shoulders are still relatively square at impact opposed to being cleared out of the way to give you more room at impact to use the face and not the hosel. But trust me, I've been here too and they always seem to come up out of the blue and show their ugly-self.

> Hit a real bad patch lately, shanking everything, little chips, pitches, full shots. When I get the timing right im hitting a very high ball. Recently been on a trackman, my path is consistently in to out by more than +2 degrees. Video below, any help would be great thanks

Your hands (and thus the club) look like they are swinging out away from the legs and body, and out towards the ball. Look at where your hands and grip are compared to your right shoulder and legs at around hip high on the downswing in moehogan's still capture. Now look at Rory's and Sergio's grip, hands, right shoulder and legs at the same point in the swing.
