Update to Taylormade P790

Except this urban legend happened twice to me in the same tournament on the teeing ground with a 7 iron then, because I thought I was crazy, paid for a trackman session. My clubs were listed on the BST here the next day as my wedge setup would have had to been 44,48,52,56 and 60 to go with 4-PW. Not very practical if you swing them with any speed at all.

Wish I had saved them, almost a year ago now. These were just center contact shots. Nothing crazy and no crazy swing speed. I'll probably get banned for this, but my driver ss is just 105. The fitter, Fairways and Greens in Knoxville TN, said this had been common for many players. A few smaller tour pros and 1 pga pro practice there on occasion and said they would never touch them due to crazy lofts and inconsistencies. I just speak from my experience and I 100% wanted to love them. I love the look and feel, but the results were just all over the place, especially from 4-7 iron.

Your results are what they are, and I can't deny them. For me, I've never had better distance control than with the P790s (and I was a skeptic until I tried them). Two reasons:

1) I am a high spin player, so I can hit mid-irons with these and still get them to stop. For low-/mid-spin players, these clubs won't work.

2) These heads are very forgiving, especially on thin shots, my primary miss. I get the same distance on a low strike as I do on a center strike.

And again, for the record, after thousands of shots, not one flier.

I will say I am typically a low spin player so this could be part of the issue. I do play a softer ball to try to gain some spin but rarely spin shots back toward me. If anything, a foot at most with short irons. Typically don't get much release but not much in the way of spin either so this could by my main issue with the clubs. I did love the look and feel of them. I should have tried them in a regular shaft to see how that worked. Played them in a project x 6.5 then tried s300 on tracman. Neither fit me at all.

Bent mine 2 degrees weak, but still love them....and I’ve tried not to. I am a bit of a low spin player, so I do play a set of i210’s as well and like them almost as much.

Not sure what type of ball you’re referring to but in many cases a softer ball spins less.....a lot less.

I don't have any science to back me up, but I have always chalked these "hot spots" up to shaft selection. I am a high spin iron player. Always had to bump up to stiffer and heavier shafts to control spin and generate the type of distance I expect. I expect that, if I used the same shafts in these p790 heads, I would have the occasional shot where the lower spinning shaft and the lower spinning head with produce a flier.

For me, I'm assuming that I'd probably want to play a little higher spinning shaft than what I would typically put in a one piece forged head. Work less for the same results.

OP: no hints of 790 replacement yet. Usually there will be tour pros testing them or bagging them by now.

In Taylormades perspective I don’t see why they would be pressured to design a replacement, stop production on 790, and invest money into retooling for new irons when 790 sales are steady. Wouldn’t it be better if TM gave themselves another year to design an 790 replacement that will blow our minds? Also if what they did with 770 is any indication they might just add in a new model (p800? Or p780?) and kill the 790 instead of replacing it.

I said this earlier... I had the 790s in a 4 - 6 iron and agreed they probably were a bad match from the beginning because I already launch high with low spin. I play to a 5.2 HC so Im no the best player in the world but certainly dont suck either. Im pretty consistent with irons...but at an iron fitting theres no reason im averaging 200 yds with a 6 iron then hit one 230. Thats not a combination of everything going perfect in the swing. Maybe 10 -12 yards on the best strike possible, but the combo of low spin and high launch sends them flying.

some of the people saying there is no flier issue, maybe thats the case for you. Ive overflown plenty of greens all last year. Some of the people in here agree every once in a while theres a freakishly long shot and some dont. it is what it is. but as I mentioned these weren't a good fit for me. I went back to cavity back and blades and my distance control has been much more reliable.

Exact same results for me. Back to the Scratch blades and they are as predictable as ever. I don't hit an 8 iron 190 with them, but I know it will go 160 every time if hit well with the blades.

Exactly. and obviously thats the difference between blades and distance irons. My new blades I know my 7 iron will be perfect from 165-175. Theres no chance of me hitting that club 185 which used to be my avg with the 790

I can confirm that Taylor Made will come out with a new p790 iron in September of 2019. Since this is the best selling iron ever for Taylor Made I suspect the changes will not be substantive. I would guess a touch more weight distribution and a thinner topline, but still very forgiving but with an even better players look. I am not a Taylor Made employee but heard this from several insiders.

From my experience with the P790s is they are definitely low spin. Came from JPX 900 Hot Metals and had to get much steeper in my iron swing to get the kind of check I need coming into greens. I’ve heard from a club builder I’ve worked with that this has been the only issue with these irons, but that it is the main tech problem with hollow-body foam insert irons across the board. I think the give-take you’re going to have from any distance irons is you’re giving up spin for distance.

All the others were really close feeling similar and distance/spin. However, every once in awhile the P790 would go 10 yards farther than the 160 carry I normally have. ??? I am now leaning more toward the JPX919 Forged.

High launch and low spin with a swing doesn't make sense unless you are a flipper, ask me how I know lol. When struck properly with a descending blow, they are consistent as anything out there for me.

All the others were really close feeling similar and distance/spin. However, every once in awhile the P790 would go 10 yards farther than the 160 carry I normally have. ??? I am now leaning more toward the JPX919 Forged.

Um, not true at all. YOUR 9-iron might perform like that, but let's not go stating this kind of nonsense as being even remotely true.
